Wow! Beautiful. I'm sure you will update when it blooms?

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Connie it really has grown!! It is gorgeous and I can't wait to see it when it is in full bloom!

Louisville, KY

It IS gorgeous!!!

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Any blooms, yet?

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks so very much everyone :) Lots of buds are forming and will be in bloom shortly. I posted a pic in an above post from a couple of years back but I will be more than happy to post a new one when it blooms. Is anyone having luck with theirs? I sure hope someone got what they were supposed to. Skellog, is your snow gone yet so you can see if something is growing?

Connie

Christiana, TN(Zone 6b)

Does it set seed? :-p

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

We were actually out of snow for a few days last week, and I went out and checked mine. No signs of life yet, but then it snowed more again, and now have to wait for the last few inches of snow to melt again. But my other peonies aren't showing any signs of life either yet.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

i hope you all get what you wanted. I am still on the look for one. plant or seeds

Louisville, KY

I want one too!!

Louisville, KY

Connie, What kind of light do they require? Sun, partial sun, shade???? Thanks, Julie :)

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

killdawabbit, I don't know much about them. I don't know if they seed, I divide mine at the rhizomes when it gets so big. I was always told to leave it alone until fall, but I had to move it one time in July. It looked sooo bad for awhile and then came out of it...THANK GOODNESS!!

Well skellog, it ain't over till it's over LOL!! I am keeping my fingers crossed for you.

juliep127, this one is out in full sun. It is surrounded by iris. I need to move it again but I am too scared I'll lose it LOL!!

I checked on it this morning and it looks like a couple of buds are close to opening. Won't be long :)

Okay...now ya'll have gotten up my curiosity. Pods do form after the blooms but I never messed with them. I went to find out about seed and I found this : http://www.paeonia.com/html/peonies/propagation.htm

Anyone on here know about seed??? This says it won't grow true and it can take about 5 years for the seedling to bloom. Is this right?

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

If your peony is a hybrid it either will not produce seed or the seed will not produce the same plant as the parent.as the parent. Division by rootstock is the only way you'll get the same plant. Most peonies need full sun to flower.

Northeast, AR(Zone 7a)

I've grown a few peonies from seed in the last couple of years, but haven't seen them bloom yet. I only manage to get a few seeds. Many pods never set seeds. If yours make any seeds, you'll see them. They're fairly big seeds, almost as big as canna seeds. If I remember correctly, the pods separate into 4 quadrants with a seed in each quadrant. I either just let them drop into the soil or I pot them. I don't nick or scarify or anything. I just let Mother Nature tend to them.

Naturally, if you deadhead or cut the flowers for a vase, those particular stems won't set seed. So if you want some seeds, let the flowers die naturally and the pods will form and dry and split open. It's late summer or fall when I gather the seeds from mine, if I remember correctly. I had one plant last year with about 75 blooms, but I only gathered about 20 seeds from it. Most pods were empty, so I figure the blooms didn't get pollinated. You may want to try to pollinate all your blooms yourself if you want lots of seeds.

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Fern leaf peony, P. tenuifolia is a species and should come true from seed--- unless a natural cross is made by the pollinator wih another peony. It does take them a few years to bloom from seed.

Thank you so much for the answers :) This is why I love DG...awesome members and great replies!! Well, I was thinking that if I "could" get some seed...maybe I could help out a few of the members. Guess we can see what happens this fall but it will sure take a while to see blooms.

I've been following this thread too as I got something from her. Really a busy thread. LOL

Found this link for info on P. tenuifolia from seed. http://www.jelitto.com/english/PA009.htm

How often do you all divide your peonies? I've never divided mine, but got them from my DM when we divided hers about 6-7 years ago. And these aren't the fern leaf, but the regular ones.

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks for sharing that link, Badseed. GULP!!! Now I know why these things are so hard to get and so expensive to buy lol. Long time for seed germination. Yeah...the thread is still pretty active.

Skellogg, I think I have divided 2 times since we got this house in 2007. Yours must be pretty sentimental too :)

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Yep, mine came from dividing my Mom's, and hers came from dividing her Mom's, which came from her Dad's! So they are really old plants, that have been around for many years in the family. I think most of us grandkids have peonies because of great grandparents, lol!

Lafayette, IN(Zone 5a)

I love the plants that come from great grandparents! We have a peony that came from my husband's grandmother who got it from her mother. We don't know where the great grandmother got it but we love it! It came to my mom long before we were ever married. His grandparents were neighbors of my parents and grandparents. They shared plants all the time and my mom got a start of DH's grandmother's peony long before we ever thought about marriag! Little did we know that a plant I would have in my yard would have come from his family! (2nd marriage for both of us so I had the peony way long before we ever married) We have shared with many cousins!

We also have two or three types of daffodils that came from my grandparents yard. A 90+ year old cousin of my husband gave us many plants last year that were brought from an old home place in Illinois and planted in Southern Indiana. Iris, daffodils, 'bluebells' and a snowball bush. I really like the 'heirloom' plants and hope to pass them onto my grandkids one day!

I also have a Christmas Cactus that belonged to my great grandmother. It has a pale pink bloom.

That is just awesome!!! Lots more meaning to them when they are passed on.

I agree! How wonderful! Nothing better than family plants! Mom's family is from Holland, sure wish I had some of their spring bulbs that they brought over with them. What a great way to keep the family bonds!

(Zone 7a)

This is the Peony I received from this thread. I hope it blooms red at least I don't have any red Peonies.

Those are pretty leaves. They look unusual to me.

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Well, it does look like a peony, Kim :) You did a great job growing it and I will keep my fingers crossed for you hoping it is red. My fernleaf is starting to open now. Poor thing hasn't seen the sun in a few days. Maybe the rain has moved out now.

Wow.....just wow.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

It looks wonderfully healthy at least! I sure hope mine does something? And hopefully yours will be red! I'm with you on this one, Kim, as I don't have any red ones either, so really hope it's red! And if mine doesn't grow, and yours is red, maybe some day when it's huge and you divide it, we can get some, hahahaha! 8-)

(Zone 7a)

Yup! lol. I have 4 Peonies...well now 5. The Mystery from this thread

1. Paeonia wittmanniana http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/306759/
This will bloom single creamy yellow

2. Paeonia anomala - which is a Pink/fuchsia color

3. Sarah Bernhardt - which I don't care much for because they flop

4. Itoh Peony 'Sequestered Sunshine'

I have about 20 seeds of the fern leaf Peony cold treating in vermiculite in the fridge. Hope they come up...
