Have Heirloom Peony

Lewisburg, KY(Zone 6a)

I bet they will, did you use rooting compound?

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Definately worth a try anyway. Don't blame you a bit for being upset. I hope they root for you! Please keep us posted as to how you did it, and if it does work for you.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

Mine is a beyond hope. dug around it and wasn't good(mush). so I will be watching you all's. I really was hoping for a fern leaf one always wanted one. hope you all get something nice out of it.

(Zone 7a)

The one I received is emerging. It was the worst thing I ever received but indeed I suppose it was a peony. I potted it and it's still in the pots and coming up now ;-)

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Mine is still under snow, so can't tell about it yet. None of my established peonies (in a different bed and are out from under snow), have appeared yet either. Do the fern leaf peonies look the same when they are starting to come up in the spring? I would think that if it was a fern leaf, it would look different.

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Mine from her trade ( 2 ) are still under snow also, plus we had appr.6 more inches last night.

But a few days ago I saw some red sprouts on some other of my peonies.

Hey everyone,

Maybe I can help you all a little bit. I have the single bloom fern leaf peony. Here is a pic of it. I took this pic on 5-1-09. They also call this a Mother's Day Peony because it is in bloom for Mother's Day and this peony emerges and blooms earlier than the other peony. I live in zone 5b and mine is coming up now so anyone in my zone or higher should be seeing it by now.

I just went out and took a pic to show you what to look for. Here it is just coming up. I hope this helps answer some of your questions :)

That looks almost like a daylily to me but on the other hand I've never had a fernleaf peonie. Is that how they look like in the beginning ?

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Yes, that is it . That little green plant in between is something else. This was my Mother's peony and her favorite so I always watch for it in the spring :) Here is another view of the buds and blooms.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

So the peony is dark red? And the green is a daylily or something like it?

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Yes. The lighter two on the lower left and upper left are the same plant (peony) They have a little more green but you can see the hint of red in them. The solid green baby plant has "invaded" between the peony shoots LOL!! I ran out to take this pic as is was starting to get dark. I will be more than happy to take another in a week or two so you all can see it grow out and compare it to the ones you got. Just let me know.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Thanks Connie! I wasn't sure that they would start red, like my regular peonies, so that's nice to know, and as I suspected, they do look a lot more fernier (lol, don't think that's a word even, lol) also, so if mine ever comes up, I'll be able to tell relatively quickly whether or not it will be a fern leaf!

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Hey skellogg!!! WOW...it has been a minute since I chatted with you. Last time was when we were worried about our little friend in AZ. Do you remember that? We were both gonna head there to take care of her LOL!!! Anyway, you're very welcome. Again, I can update pics if you like. We can make fernier a word if it isn't lol!!!

Connie

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

LOL! Where have you been keeping yourself Connie? You went to AZ without me didn't you, lol! I knew fernier would make sense to someone, lol! And of course we would love more pictures, especially since I don't have one, so can only enjoy those of my friends ;-)

springfield area, MO(Zone 5b)

The reddish color is the peony,
the green plant coming up in it, is a daylily.

Christiana, TN(Zone 6b)

Hmmm......I don't suppose there is any peony left?

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

llyyz,is not a member anymore.

Christiana, TN(Zone 6b)

hmmm...:-(

Louisville, KY

I got a peony from her, but it looked like a bunch of roots from a tree or????

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

That's kinda what mine looked like too. Did yours grow any last year, or has it shown any signs of life? Mine did nothing last year, and is still under snow, so don't know if it will appear this year or not. Will be interesting to see if it is alive, and what it actually is!

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

Just a heads up y'all. She re-surfaced yesterday in the C & S forum as pompuplover. Admin is on top of it tho and booted her again.

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

THANKS, Tommie. She tried back in Jan. on a few sites and I answered her before I realized who she was and got suspicious when I saw Salem, OR. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1148172/ Terry immediately took care of that one too. KUDOS to Terry for staying on top of this :))))))

I will try to post an update on the REAL fern leaf peony for you all today. It is coming up nicely.

Skellogg, I didn't go to AZ 'cause I was waitin' on you!!! LOL!!!!

I am very interested, aspen. That's beautiful. I can't wait till I can get my own. That's P. tenuifolia right?

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Yep :) Mine is a single bloom though, not double. It is still very beautiful and of course very sentimental since it was my Mother's and she passed a few years ago. Every now and then it will get big enough for me to feel secure enough to divide lol.

Connie

Christiana, TN(Zone 6b)

I love single blooms.

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

It's so nice that you have peonies coming up that good already! Spring is definately on the way there, which means soon here too, lol!

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

If ya got what it is supposed to be, you should be seeing it shortly, skellogg. My other peonies haven't broken ground yet.

Connie

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

My other ones haven't either, and they are in a bed on the south and get full sun. The new one is also in full sun, but it is in a bed where there is still snow cover. But that bed gets drifted real bad, so snow cover is much thicker there. If the sun would come out for a few days, we would be about out of snow piles, lol!

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

skelogg,we had another snowstorm here today...6-12 inches...but I think we got appr.6 inches +

Ranburne, AL(Zone 8b)

I would love to have some Peony If you have any left.I lost all my Plants moving if you have anything else for spare.I love all Flowers,Herbs anything to get started again .3hanks in advance .Porsha

Louisville, KY

skellogg, Mine never came up and I have looked for signs, but I haven't seen a dirn thing!! Heck!! My banana trees came back!! They are already a foot high. That mess I got from her was just that!!!

Louisville, KY

aspenjocop, Did you get yours from her??? Julie

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Just checked mine yesterday, and there is no signs of anything here either :-(

FYI- lljjz was on DG in january as Summerflower but was thrown off.

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

I received 2 from her and they both show life.
She didn't have any more Fern leaf so she sent me 2 other heirloom peonies, one still with a blossom. Can't remember what she called it but it looked like a peony I had to leave behind at our other house.I sent her postage.
Will see if they bloom for me since I actually left them in pots in the cab of my husbands pick up truck for the winter.Peonies sure are hardy !!!

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

yes they are!! One of the reasons I love them, and deer don't like them, and they smell wonderful, and have such pretty flowers, and ......

No, It was my Mother's and she has passed away so it is very special to me.

Mine has grown quite a bit since the last pic I posted. Chances are that if it hasn't started coming up for you all...it probably won't :( So sorry, everyone and so happy for the ones who got a good one!!!

Connie
