The Annona or custard apple tree I have is decades old and was never really cared for. It fell down and suckers sprouted. Years passed, I bought the house and land. We recently cut down all but one of the tree sized suckers growing out of the fallen tree stump.
Around midnight last night as I was hunting leaf-cutter ants, I looked up and YUCKO! Little fat orange and yellow wormlike things were growing under the skin of the leaves and on the stalk of a new sucker.
What are they? Where did they come from? What should I do about them?
They are in a raised patch along with sanseveria, huge Cannas, 3 red Gingers and about 6 cherimoyas that are around 3 feet tall.
We need advice, direction and help!
Many thanks.

These could be scale insects, sap-feeding relatives of aphids. See http://tinyurl.com/29slshn for an image of one in the genus Philephedra, which has been reported from Annona. Scale insects often can be controlled by application of an insecticidal soap.
Thanks Suunto and greetings to all my friends in West Virginia! These larvae were only on one small sucker. Odd although it sounds, I put a plastic bag over the sucker so I could take the whole thing to one of the University nurseries.
As you noted, I too looked up Philephedra. They certainly look similar but different. I'll check with someone who might know at the University and get back to you. Thanks for the lead.
