DAILY PICS vol 309

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I was asked to start a new thread.
Not exactly today's daily pic, but is this a sapsucker? He/ she/ offspring thereof visits this tree every winter. I haven't taken any pictures this week. I keep hearing towhees all around me; sadly I am afraid its due to habitat loss, there was a small farm and some woods cut down a few years ago behind us.

I have two cardinal "couples" at my house this year. I missed a great shot with the male and female together, but here is one of my regular males picking up food under the feeder.

Yes, that is a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. I don't see a lot of them around. I took one photo along the B&A trail in Arnold two years ago and have seen a few at the Patuxent Research Refuge on occasion.

Thanks for starting a new thread.

My Juncoes stay around all year. I think I'm at about their lowest nesting elevation.

Thank you Sallyg for the new thread. I've seen a couple Northern Flickers foraging on the ground. Beautiful a Woodpecker, but wasn't too quick on the draw. On the other hand, this Great Blue Heron patiently pose for a pic. I'm so glad.

Nice ones Rockminer, ah, that's why I don't see any junco around here. I like the Blackheaded Grosbeak too.

Sallyg thanks for getting us started and nice capture of the yellow bellied sapsucker.

I got a photo of an odd bird today at the local High School.

An American Woodcock.

Thanks sallyg for the new thread..I love the sapsuckers. I see them ocassionly here...not often enough for sure!

Bill...nice shots! Juncos are such cute birds!

Chris...great catch with the woodcock!!

I don't usually toot my own horn....but I got this shot of the Pileated Woodpecker today totally by accident...didn't even know I got until I load pics to the computer. Anyway, I think it is just sooooo awesome!

It was almost 6pm..so the light in this area was not good. But she was so pretty!

sally, I just might take you up on it.

ilflowers and Lily, I like your Cardinal and Great Blue Heron, respectively.

rockminer, always nice to see a Black-headed Grosbeak. They are a neat looking bird.

chris, great shot of the Woodcock.

nanny, excellent shots of the Pileated. The one with the wings spread is quite sharp considering the shutter speed was only 1/500 sec. You caught him at just the right time.

Marlton, NJ

Very nice pics Sally! Thanks for starting the new thread! I rarely see the Sapsuckers.

Rockminer, I love that Black-headed Grosbeak!!

Lily, Beautiful shot of the Great Blue Heron!!

Chris, Such a good shot of the American Woodcock! I love their big soft eyes.

Nanny, Great shot of the Pileated!!! The Towhee is a pretty girl.

Today was the first warm sunny day in quite awhile and the birds were using Frank's Creek on a regular basis.

Great pictures on this new thread.

From the picture, you wouldn't think that the woodcock could fly, but they do. They are courting in the fields near us, but at dusk so no picture. You can hear the whir of the wings, then silence (they have dropped to the ground), then a noise which sounds like beeep. In a few minutes they take off again.

Great start to another thread Sallyg! I love Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers! We don't see much of them either.

Nanny... great shots of the Pileated! Good job! Were they taken with the SX20?

I had some excitement today. We went walking down by the river, and confirmed that we have a pair of bald eagles living along the river in our little 'burg! We spotted them about two weeks ago... then got a good look at them today. Now these are not good photos as I was across the river... but the first one confirms there is a pair. I hope to get better photos throughout the summer. I did walk along the river on the other side later in the evening, under the trees where they had been sitting... but never saw them again.

And flying along the river's edge. Sorry about the quality... I was pretty far away at this point.

Another first for me... I actually captured a photo of a heron with a fish. Every Spring, the shad run up the Rappahannock to spawn, and the herons take full advantage of it! I was actually watching another heron when I saw a scuffle between two. This one had caught the fish and another was trying to take it away from him!

"Hey buddy, get your own... this one's MINE!"

The light was pretty low at this time... almost 8pm this evening.

The leucistic Collared Dove has been absent for awhile. I suspect she has been setting on eggs. Returned with her mate this week.

My wife's 'cute little pink flower feeder' got blown over by a thunderstorm and broken recently. Since the bluebirds are conditioned to it, I just set them a place at the breakfast table on the patio. Daddy doesn't seem to mind joining me for breakfast.

you guys move so fast!

Love the woodcock! I meant to go on a woodcock field trip in March but didn't get there. Nice PIleated, Nanny. Love the sapsucker start! I've only had them a couple times here, but never long enough to photograph.

Yesterday at the pond, with the bird cam.

Wild Rose, yes that is taken with the X20......Like Linth said, very luckily it turned out that well. I am really trying to grasp and understand shutter speed and beggining to play with it. It really does pay to learn your camera...and luck doesn't hurt either! LOL

There goes the number of unknown birds showing here on this thread. I'll spend some time this morning and look them over. Thank all for sharing. Wild Rose, I was so excited to see your picture of the Heron with his catch for the day! Congrats! Though I often see them staking out on shallow water for fish. But occassionally I do see them diving in from above to catch fish -- never have I gotten a picture that's so cool!

Marlton, NJ

Adel, Great shots of all your little guys in the creek!!

VA, Congratulations on the Eagles, that is awesome! Very nice shots of the Great Blue Heron!!

Red, Sweet pic of Daddy Blue and the Collared Dove!!

Mrs Ed, Good one of the Grackle with the bird cam!!

Nanny, Love the Pileated!!!

Thanks. I put out some berries and granola hoping to bring down the Mockingbird, and the Catbird stopped by for some granola.

Lily_love, your Heron looks like a diver on the starting block at the Olympics.

Chris, the Woodcock is gorgeous.

Ilflowers, good shot of the Cardinal

Sally, thanks for the new thread. It is dreadful the impact that habitat destruction has. And sadder still is that a lot of people are unaware of it. Love the Sapsucker.

Nanny, wow on the Pileated shots. The in-flight one is a stunner.

Good capture on the Heron, Wild Rose and congratulations on the Bald Eagles.

Marlton, NJ

iflowers, I'm sorry I missed your shot of the Cardinal. Very nice!!

GP, Granola.. have to try that some time.

Tiller, OR(Zone 8a)

I have some feeders down near the creek because there are more trees there than near the house. On the way down I chuckled at this Bandtail Pigeon. Doesn't look to be a comfortable position. These are such wary birds, I was lucky it hadn't noticed me yet.

Considering the time of year, I thought the heart shaped image of the Tree Swallows was quite in line with the season.
