Bird Files Pictures Discussion Forum

Marlton, NJ

Hi, I was wondering why when someone adds a new photo it does not show it as a new post on my Home Page? It only shows as new when someone comments on the photo therefor a lot of photos unfortunately go unnoticed. I know some people wonder why there are never an comments on their images so I was wondering if there was a way this could be changed to show all new additions as new postings on our
Home Page. Thank You! ^_^

Hmmmm. Well....

1) The system alerts you to a "watched" thread only when it has a post that is new to you (i.e., written by someone else.)

2) The system automatically creates the photo discussion threads on behalf of the photographer/submitter. Which means it treats it just like a thread you created yourself - it wouldn't be new to you, unless/until someone else posts to it.

3) The system does not assume you want to "watch" or be alerted to anyone else's threads. (That would be a bit of a nightmare, if everyone were automatically set up to watch every new thread that came down the pike.)

But if the forum is in your list of favorites, the new photos/threads should trigger a "Yes" meaning there's been activity in the forum - does it do that?

Hi Terry, Only when someone makes a reply, not when a new original post (photo) has been made.

Have you noticed if this is all the time, or only when your own photos are posted?

Marlton, NJ

It's all the time when anyone posts.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to plead ignorant - this forum was not on my list of favorites (but I have now added it to see what's going on.)

While I'm waiting for a new photo to be added, is this lack of "new" notice a recent change; has it ever popped up "new" on your home page?

Hi Terry, It has always been going on to my knowledge but was brought to my attention recently by another member.

I know this won't come up for me but how about if I post a new photo of a bird and we'll see if it comes up on your list as new. Off to do that now. :-)

Okay it is posted.

Thanks - I'll take some screen shots and ask the tech team about it.

Did this work properly in the past (i.e., this is a bug), or is this something that it *should* have been doing all along (i.e., a suggestion ;o)

Marlton, NJ

I honestly don't think it ever worked differently unless someone else noticed a difference. Sorry.LOL, I don't know what it should be doing. I assumed all new post should show up as new in my Favorites. (shrug) :-)

Gotcha. I went ahead and filed the report with my screenshot - we'll see what they come back with. Having it react dynamically would be nice ;o)

Terry - this is also true of PlantFiles Pictures, and I suspect it's probably also true of BugFiles Pictures.

PlantFiles does flag the new activity - it has a different problem, though (it has to do with the time stamp on the new photos. I've got that one on their radar screen too.)

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

No, it doesn't flag new activity. Right now PlantFiles has FIVE new pictures, and yet it shows up as having NO new activity. The only time it changes to "YES" is the same as BirdFiles - when someone adds a comment to one of the pictures.

There are two possible explanations for PlantFiles:

1) It works exactly like BirdFiles (or more precisely, BirdFiles works exactly like it, since PF came first) - in which case, it has probably never shown the new photo posts as "new" activity in the forum either. If that's the case, when the tech team figures out BirdFiles, they can apply the same fix to PlantFiles.

2) It does work properly under ordinary circumstances, but it currently has a hiccup with the time stamp on new images, which is throwing it off. I've got a request into the tech team for that as well.

Either way, we should be able to get both resolved, but I know the team is busy working on the new forum post/thread search function, so this will probably take a backseat to developing and testing the search capability first.

I'll bet it works just like BirdFiles (and with BugFiles too), and all three will need fixing when the team has the time.

I don't know about problem #2.
