Gulf Coast RU, So Much Fun!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

We just got home and I wanted to give a big thank you to ceejaytown for hosting the RU today. What started off as a cool rainy morning changed into a beautiful afternoon. I dragged my poor husband there with the understanding that I was just taking a few things to give...and not taking anything home. I resisted quite a while,,,until he turned his back. cj mentioned she had leftover plants (and that's all I needed). I really didn't take home that much, and nothing that I already had, but now I have to find more room for them. Enjoyed meeting so many of the people that I only knew by their screen names. Food was great! Thanks again cj, it was such a nice day....Sandi

hope someone will post pics. i never took my camera out of the pouch...

Wells, TX(Zone 8b)

Kingwood, TX(Zone 9a)

I agree! It was great to meet everyone! Also, thanks to everyone who shared plants and books with me; I look forward having lots of beautiful plants to bring to future RUs!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

We had a great time, too! ^_^ Most of my plants are in the ground... I love seeing RU plants bloom and remembering all of the friends who gave them to me. :-) Thank you, everyone!!

And thank you again, CJ, for hosting us! Having the pavilion and the stage worked out perfectly! ^_^

Sealy, TX

It was a great time! My daughter, Morgane, and I had a wonderful time and loved meeting everyone. Andrea, James is a total sweetie and that baby girl of yours, GingerGirl, was an absolute doll! She got me really excited about my baby girl's baby due in October!

The food was great, the company was great and the plants were a plus!

BTW, Morgane called me tonight and asked me to post that I guess with all the "goodbyes", we went right off and left our two umbrellas. They were on the back corner table - mine was a large "old fashioned" one that I love and Morgane's was one of the short handled ones that had svelte women in black gowns on it. (I teased her about not looking like that ever again! LOL) Apparently, she's had this for years and is begging anyone that may have picked them up to please let us know!

Thanks, CeeJay, for setting up the perfect place for this RU! You did a great job!

Deb

Pearland, TX

It was wonderful to meet everyone. We had a great time! Can't wait for the next one!

New Waverly, TX(Zone 8b)

Dstarr, I think ceejay or smockette has your umbrellas. We didn't know who they belonged to, but figured someone would ask about them. Now we know!

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Dee & I had a great time! Many kudos to Ceejay for hosting the innaugural GCRU .....at least,..I hope it was the innaugural (smile)
NOTE: I heard many comments regarding the hopes that next year's GCRU would be at the same location.....hmmmmm?

was wonderful to meet so many new friends....some came from a far distance too!

was wonderful to get home to examine & nurture the new "babies"

Lookin' forward to the next one!! Lee & Dee

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

I have to give my kudos to Ceejay as well. Such a well organized RU, and really sweet person... you can't get any better than that for an RU Hostess!! Thanks girl... you rock, and I do hope as Lee says that this was the inaugural place, time and HOSTESS for the new GCRU... count me in!!

Thanks everyone for all the wonderful priceless gifts I received from everyone!! I am always amazed at the generosity of gardeners, and the love that each of you shows to others shines through. Such an amazing quality in these dificult times

I am honored to get to meet so many new friends, and of course see my old friends ... such a pleasant day... well after the rain..LOL.. but even the cold rain will bring happy memories down the road! I wait for the pics too. I had my camera but never took mine out of the case either, I was having too much fun! Thanks also for helping take care of my "child".. PeCe (Prissy)... she is just like any other "child", she loved all the attention she got, and fell fast asleep when I started driving maybe 2 miles from the park... would wake up.. barely.. as if to say "are we there yet"...LOL

Sooooo... Ceejay.. thinking of a fall date yet?????..LOL

Sealy, TX

Thanks, Annette - I'll dmail them and see.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Alright Deb! RU'ers to the rescue! Glad you've found the bumbershoots

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

I have the umbrellas, safely @ the back door. I can give them Sandy(Ilovejesus99) to take home & meet up with your mom & you or whatever.
Sandy is staying until tomorrow so LMK!!!
:~)

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

What a wonderful group of people to spend the day with. I just wish it didn't have to end. I can't thank you all enough for making this "inaugural" event so much fun. You've twisted my arm! LOL!

A very special thanks to my DH, Larry - he dug and potted and carried, and set up - without him I couldn't have physically done it. Thanks to Marylyn for setting up the food thread and helping out wherever she was needed - right up to the end. And thanks also to Lee for setting up the grill and cooking the hot dogs, and helping with the cleanup.

The weather liars did it again, and what was forecast as a beautiful day - right up to the time of the rain - turned out to be their version of a 20% chance of rain. Hello! It's raining - isn't that 100%? It may well have been a blessing in disguise, as we had no trouble parking. It was a gentle rain, with no wind, so I count that as another blessing.

I've gone through my pictures and will be posting them in the Round Up Pictures forum. I'll provide a link as soon as I get them done. Please feel free to post yours there, too.

Dallas, TX

Hi, Smockette - as for those errant - what did Lee call them - "bumbershoots"! That's a wonderful name for them - If you'll just bring thme to the San Marcos RU (I think you're going?) that would be great. I think Morgane wants to come with me to that one, too! It's great to know, like Lee says "RU'ers to the rescue!"

Sandy, you have a safe trip home and hopefully we'll get together in San Marcos!

Please add yours when you can. They brought back such pleasant memories...

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Sylvia - I have to tell you - I think that beautiful hosta made up for all of Larry's hard work. He's in heaven... Thanks much for sharing that with him! Gosh, I hope it lives!!

New Waverly, TX(Zone 8b)

I love the hosta Sylvia brought me, too! If it shows signs of decline, I will pass it to Larry..But, Sylvia, I am really dissapointed you didn't wear your BIKINI.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL!! I forgot all about that! Yeah, Sylvia. Show us the bikini!

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Yeah Sylvia....(I'm glad Annette reminded us)...,,was it yellow polka dot?

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

News Flash! If I gave you a Salvia madrensis at the Swap....it's mis-labeled. It's a Black & Blue. If you thought the madrensis was a spreader, the B&B is a thug. I was just out front trying to dig out the front bed...and realized I brought the wrong salvia. Sorry...I'll replace 'em if you like...

Wells, TX(Zone 8b)

you gave me one..dont worry about replaceing itit .. Ive all aready got a black and blue and its not been an issue for me.. Ill find a open space for this one so it can go wild!!!

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

I agree Sandi. I gave two to Sylvia at the RU (she wanted them) from a bed where I thought (hoped) I had eradicated them two years ago. Still trying...They're like nut grass, with those wandering tubers - only bigger.

I just pulled up and threw away some more Salvia madrensis, another salvia that I keep trying to eradicate. In its case, it self sows like crazy. I like the burgundy rosette it forms, but I don't like finding it everywhere after it seeds.

I guess if you have lots of property it's no problem, but I don't, and so I only want what I want!! :-)

I would probably be strung up or tarred and feather if y'all knew what I have passed judgment on and declared war against.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

LOL Ceejay... paleaseeeee don't mention nut grass....grrrrrrr

Dallas, TX

Blkraven, you like your B&B too, I see. I wonder how long its going to take seedlings to get going. Ceejay, you can send me some of that other stuff you are talking about, I will pay postage. :) I wonder if Charlene gave me the Red Lady or whatever. I got all my stuff for the front planted this morning, the shade next week. Who gave me the Cyclamen? Its absolutely gorgeous!
Deb, I am planning on coming to San Marcos too. I got friends looking forward to me staying with them so it should be blast. If I didn't have a diabetic cat, I would stay a week. :)

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Sylvia - Coming your way - Wood Fern, Torenia (wishbone flower), Jewels of Opar, Four O'clock, Ruellia, Fig Ivy, Taro - Illustrus aka Black Princess, Gulf Coast Penstemon, Obedient Plant, Wandering Jew, Sweet Potato Vine (although I think the Marguerite and Blackie combined are beautiful), Parrot's Beak (Lotus), Mecardonia 'Gold Flake', Pavonia (Rock Rose), Cuban Oregano, Salvia lyrata, Pseudacorus... I also have the reseeding Mexican Sedum - and if wasn't so easy to pull up, I would have to declare war on it. Each of these has overstepped their boundaries in my yard, and had to go. Now, if I had a bigger yard, I might rethink some of them.

And I'm really sorry - I don't have the Salvia madrensis. I was talking about the Salvia lyrata being a bad reseeder. Hope that didn't cause any problems out there.

Bring on the tar & feathers!

Edited to add Pseudacorus, cuz I forgot it.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Beautiful bed...so tranquil...unlike what mine looks like right now. Takes me a month to get everything put back where it belongs..

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Becky - I love your shade bed. Look at those hosta, Sylvia! Sorry, beck, the Torenia are gone (I hope). Took me three to four years to yank all of those seedlings.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

LOL Ceejay.. are you saying the Torenia is invasive?? Maybe i didn't want them after all..but i still want to trade something in the fall... hint.. hint... TY for the compliment on the shade garden. it's going on it's 3rd year, and I am proud of it

Jan... I used the Liriope on the other end of that shade garden.. TY so much.. now that bed is finished!!

TY Sandi for your compliment.. it is a wonderful place to sit and have coffee in the mornings.. heck I left it all out over the winter.. I need to find my cushions.. wherever I put them I am sure..LOL

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Sylvia, I did give you lady in red as you thought. Here is a photo of it. It is a heavy re-seeder also. I however, love it and don't mind the extras.
Charlene

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Becky - I wouldn't say the Torenia is invasive, just a very heavy reseeder. Some people don't mind that (hello, Charlene :-) but I do.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks girl.. I might put it back on my list then. I do love the flowers! We have 22 acres.. NOT that I plan on that big of a yard!!

Dallas, TX

Ceejay Send em on! I got some Hostas that I need to thin out that Larry might like too.
Becky you need some more Hostas in that bed, thanks for the Clyclaman, I sure hope I can keep it as pretty as you did.
Charlene, you gave me several things, but i did not remember what they were. I just wanted to make sure I planted the Red Lady on my side of the yard. lol I got everything planted that go in the front this morning I think. Charlene those onions what part do you eat? I am going to chop half off before I put in ground. I got chives, onions and that Magenta and something else. I think I will make a little kitchen garden in the neighbors back yard. LOL Charlene did you get the trumpet vine cuttings?

Pearland, TX

Who made the corn salad? I need the recipe for that. It was soo good.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

We did - and glad you liked it. It's one of our favorites! Will d-mail you the recipe.

Dallas, TX

Ceejay, that Nightlife Hosta is a beautiful plant! Check out the mature plant, now I got to keep one for myself;)

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

Ceejay, just call me when things are over-running your beds! You know I have plenty of room. I'm not proud, or not too proud. I'll pot up any plant that will bloom for me!!!
Also, I will be going to Sylvia's in a couple of wks & can take all those plants you want to go to her.
Seems she ran off & left her beautiful Mock Orange @ my house! So, I get to watch it for a while longer b4 I have to take it to her.
I would love any Madrensis fr anyone that could share anytime. I love that plant & I lost all of mine this winter!!!
:~)

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Linda, I don't have those plants anymore. They were examples of things that I've gotten rid of because they were too invasive for me... It was just my little joke that I was giving them to Sylvia (cuz she likes invasive plants). I guess "little" is the operative word here, since no one understood it.
