So what's going on in your vegetable garden right now?!

Hallowell, ME

As for me I planted snap peas last weekend. Today I spread composted cow manure on my rhubarb patch and asparagus patch. I'll be planting beets soon. I have raised beds and I"ve been cleaning them up for the last few weeks. Plan on spreading compost later.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

nothing yet - everything is still inside getting started - except for the rhubarb which is growing fast and picked my first asparagus (one stock) yesterday.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I won't have asparagus for months!
The leeks that I replanted from winter leftovers are doing well and the leftover onions are alive and growing, too. Rhubarb is doing very well and the horseradish I moved is breaking out of dormancy. The gooseberry is green and the raspberries are popping up all over. Augghh! The blackberries have only a leaf or two, grapes are still dormant, currants are leafing up and the elderberries are starting to leaf out. The apricot is blooming and I think I have some setting going on! The medlar is greening but it doesn't bloom for quite awhile yet. The asian pear, Fuyu persimmon and Paw-Paws are still dormant as is the chinniquins (sp) but the tea camilla is starting to recover from frost damage. And the thimbleberries are growing. I swear that if they don't produce fruit this year, they are so out of here! The blue berries are starting to bud and I want to get one or two more for my patch this year. I couple of cranberries survived as did just two of the wintergreen plants. The bush cherry is budding - too bad I threw out the others years ago so this one doesn't have a polinator. I should just chuck it - but it is growing. (said with a high pitched whine) I'm watching for the sunchokes to sprout but if I remember correctly - it is May or June before I see them behind the compost pile. I still haven't taken the time to check my seeds and order what I need. . . maybe this weekend. . . famous last words.

Geez Yankeecat you're lucky to have gooseberries and currants. They're not allowed in Maine due to some disease they carry for the white pine. I do love gooseberries. My mom used to do marvelous pies!!!! My blueberries won't blossom for awhile yet but with the weather being what it's been I keep checking everything.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

This weather is crazy! I have tulips blooming - tulips!!!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Peas are about 2". Beets are sprouting. I will try broccoli again this year, so I planted a few seedlings.

My blackberry cuttings all made it through the winter and have green on them. Thanks, AYC. I so want some blueberries. Is it too late to plant them?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

No, not to late....I have 4 new blueberry bushes, 3 razzberry going in soon.

Thomaston, CT

Today I planted 2 varieties of carrots, mixed beets, purple spring onions, lettuce, & dill. My cherry tree is blossoming which is not good news...too early.

Hallowell, ME

Have 4 mature blueberries and 2 I planted last year. My mature ones are 20+ and still going strong. All are the high bush variety. Had so many berries last year I had to give some away - my freezer was too full.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Have not started veggies yet. I should get some greens going very soon! Trying to decide what to try this year. Last year was such a dud. I only have the two 4X8 boxes.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Victor, ever since I was a kid i could not grow carrots, always plucked them thinking they were the weed. Last year I put a small bag of sand in a small area and mixed it w/my soil. I used burpee's Nantes Half carrot seed tape and my carrots were sweet and straight! I bought 2 more for this year.

Cool! Maybe I'll try.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

For a nice small cataloupe thats sweet I recomend 'Honey Rock' perfect for the kids or one person.

Swiss Chard will bloom all the way to frost, actually it can take a slight hit or two. When you pick it and it grows back. My favorites is "Bright Lights"

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Bright Lights is my favorite, too.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, I like Bright Lights. I might try cantaloupe again since last year was so bad. Are there really small watermelons?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

crimson sweet and sugar baby a good small ones.

Thomaston, CT

I haven't tried melons in years...good project for my GKs.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

carrots where a big hit here too last year celeste - we always (read wife) ignore them and forget to weed out some of the newly germinated babies and they do not turn out great - last year i think we did red rocket. great in t-sauce instead of sugar.

Hallowell, ME

Those seed tapes are nice! I don't seem to have much luck with melons though. I may try again this year. I've cut back quite a bit from what I used to grow. Think maybe I'll start experimenting again and see what comes up.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

If you want to have luck w/melons I find that if you don't put them in the ground until mid-June they will do better. I have tried planting them anywhere from May 20th to June 1st and everytime I had to replant. The last 2 years I have not planted them in the ground until June 10th or later......no replanting this way. We had an extremely cool and wet summer last year, these didn't get planted until June 18th, this picture was taken around the first of Sept.

so you start them inside then bring them out?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

yes, like they like heat...hate cold. Start them next week and start bringing them out on nice days by the end of may. i bringing them in at night though until im almost ready to plant.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

if i bump into a seed package i might try them.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Peas, radishes, onions are all up. Spinach and lettuce to soon follow. I want to get my potatoes in this weekend as well as carrots, beets, and more radishes. Okra, tomatoes, and herbs are all up indoors. Ric

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I do not eat a great deal of Okra, but I still grow it to see the flower. ^_^

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Okra is one of the few veggies I don't like.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Only in Gumbo for me.

Hallowell, ME

I love it fried, boiled, gumbo, whatever. (Of course I was raised in the south).

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I Luv Okra! Trick is to steam them less than 5min before they get slimy, (have to watch them closely), usually the last part of a meal I cook. - 'Al Dente' so to speak.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

The flower is lovely no matter what........

Very Nice!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks, but can't take credit for M. N. ^_^ I planted seeds someone gave me and after that I just kept harvesting the seeds. It's a lovely yellow w/a deep maroon colored eye and it grows tall so it doesn't take up alot of room.

Hallowell, ME

Well Pixie ya did it to me. I had to go out and buy watermelon and canteloupe seeds. Probably start them in house soon. Watermelon is a crimson sweet "Sandia" and canteloupe is "Hearts of Gold".

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Well, I wish you the best of luck Frank!! ^_^

KENNESAW, GA(Zone 7b)

Is it too late to do snow peas? I have my lettus in along with some spinach. My swiss chard overwintered. I got a few broccoli plants from the store but the ones I started under lights is too small to put out ( think) I got a grow stand that holds 8 flats. This is the first time I have started under lights. After last years tomato disaster I decided I needed to start indoors earlier. Last year was too cold and rainy then winter came:( All my tomatoes, peppers, corn flowers an broccoli are up doing well under lights. I also have a flat of herbs but am not sure when to put them out. I never had room to grow them before. As soon as the herbs and broccoli are out of the way I will start my squash and cucumbers. I am blessed and cursed with 100 year old maples so boxes and capturing pockets of light is the way to go. I started raised bed gardening in 1972-- original square foot in the early 80's and now am trying the new square foot gardening. Last year I built 4 boxes. This year I have 3 more boxes -- total 7. If I have a good year I plan to give extras to a food bank. I am a widow and live alone but love to grow things.

I went out to stare at my asparagus patch and ask it why OTHER PEOPLE were getting spears and I had to wait - and there were a couple of spears just breaking the ground!!!!!!

The ostrich ferns are starting to put up fronds. The fiddleheads I buy in the store are smooth but the ones in my garden are "fuzzy" - is there something I have to do to get rid of the fuzz so I can eat them?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i will pick my FIRST batch of asparagus tomorrow!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Victor, I got seed for a small (personal?) melon, at a swap. I think it was called "Moon and Stars", I haven't planted them yet. Bill, I'm going out to cut my first asparagus after I finish this post, so I don't forget, again. Lettuce is up, WOW, 5 days, and I hope potatoes get in today. Ric

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Ric, I just got Moon & Stars too, will try it this year.
