Daily Pictures Volume # 302

Sandusky, OH

Really nice shots everyone!! Tried to see if I could get a few flight shots with the 1.4 converter attached to the 400mm. The converter does not perform to well, but if everything is right for a moment you can get a couple, but with auto-focus it jogs back and forth to much, so its not trustworthy for flight shots unless you take tons of pictures.
Canada Geese favored the converter but only for 2 seconds. lol

VA_Wild_Rose, I checked on that wildlife refuge, it is in the Florida Panhandle. I live on the Space Coast (near Kennedy Space Center). Looks like a nice place, though. Here's an Indigo Bunting.

Wow you guys have been on a tear!!! So may great pics from everyone; thank you!!

Dave, Good to see you back! Hope your project is done now. We missed you!

Pelle ^_^

Stafford County, VA

Thanks Pelle. The master bath project is pretty well finished. Funny thing, by the time I was finished, I had dragged almost every tool I have in my workshop up there. Didn't realize it until I had to start taking them all back down to the shop.

But now it's taxes.
.
The Bradford pear is really in flower. Not sure if this is a shot of the tree or the bird.

Different bird in a different part of the tree.

Oh my gosh Dave those shots are gorgeous!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Wow, what beautiful pics. Welcome back Dave and congrats on your finished project. Those Blue Birds they're one special beauty by themselves -- doesn't matter how their pictures were taken. Lin, those Titmice waist no time at the feeder. They swoop down, quicky picked out what seed they wanted and flew off, but if you catch them while they preening. I just got a series of them. Sorry you pc crashed, what a bummer!

Our weather finally turns out beautiful--about time! I'll be spending more time outdoor. Will share more pics. later this evening.

Norman, OK

Great pics as usual, Dave. Look what is in our BB box! We are leaving in a.m. for about ten days, but should be back to see the eggs hatch. Average clutch, average incubation time should put hatch arouond 16 April. We'll be back by then.

Plantlady, I have wondered the same thing about the patches on the Red-winged Blackbirds. This was bird #3 that showed up and he had a much larger patch than the other 2 did. Maybe it has to do with age???

You should hear me as I'm looking through this thread. I am quite literally gasping at these photos. I just love the bluebird shots. That goose with the wings almost touching the water -- amazing. Beautiful shots of that lesser goldfinch and I've never heard of a Phainopepla -- very cool. All wonderful!

I was very excited to see these Cedar Waxwings yesterday perched in my neighbor's dead tree. Oh theres a white-winged dove in the pic too.

Thumbnail by Elphaba
Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

OMG! Two new cool pics while I was posting. Congrats red!

Here's one more of the waxwings. Doesn't it look like the two on the right are wondering what happened to the first one's head?

Thumbnail by Elphaba
Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Oh how exciting is that red!!!! :)

Burd...I really think that first goose shot is cool!

I am having a hard time with flight shots and the new camera. I was used to a EVF and this has an Optical VF they are different!

But hey I did get this Grackle...LOL

Elphaba, those Waxwings do travel fast. They were just here last Tuesday. lol, just kidding. Red, have a terrific trip and I'm blue with envy on your Blues' eggs.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

LOL at that last one Elphaba..but a good shot!

The Grackle shared it back view too....now I have to go walk my little guy be back later!

Nan, that's a great shot at the Grackle!

Marlton, NJ

Red, Congratulations on the eggs! Can't wait to see the chicks.

Nanny, Great shots of the handsome Red-winged Blackbird and Grackles!

Elphaba, Lucky You!! Beautiful shots of the Cedar waxwings!!!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Nanny, I'm so impressed that you are growing as a photographic artist. One day I want to grow too!

Here's Loggerhead shrike from the day before yesterday. I haven't posted in a while! I know, I know, I need to keep up!

Thumbnail by Elphaba
Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

One more of the shrike. The wildflowers were blooming in this park and I took the dogs with me. Tried to get them to pose in the wildflowers, but they insisted on barking wildly and generally being obnoxious. I can only blame myself though b/c I raised the rotten beasties.

Three more from last weekend at Sheldon Lake. All Golden-crowned Night Herons. I like this one b/c he looks so surprised!

Thumbnail by Elphaba
Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

They had started nesting and then we had 30+ mph winds. When I went back afterward, the nests were all but gone. I was glad to see that they are back in business.

Red, I have the first egg in our nest this morning, so if they both follow normal patterns ( four or five eggs and then 13 days to hatch) we should track very close to each other. I put the sparrow spooker up as soon as she laid the egg but as you can see, she isn't fond of it. She will get used to it, tho.

Thumbnail by 2dCousinDave

They're just kind of funny looking aren't they?

Papa was perched on the spooker just before this shot was taken.

Elphaba, I love those Shrike and the comical Golden-crowned Night Herons!! Wonderful shots!!

Dave, Cute shot of her tugging the Sparrow Spooker and Papa flying off!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Lily, that finch in the cherry blossoms is so cute even if he is naughty.

Plantlady, that jay is really handsome. Cute birds, love that Martin house.

Nanny, cute titmouse. I'm hoping my little ones are all nesting too. I just love the babies. Your red-winged are so pretty with the different colors on the wings. Cute photo of the red-winged with the cowbird. The "look" says it all.

Wild Rose, that heron is beautiful. Glad you can see so many at once. Beautiful shot of the osprey!!

Dave, your fantastic pictures always amaze me. "Butter butt" (LOL) is adorable and the bb in flight is so pretty. Your birds and blooms are gorgeous!! They sure make a perfect pair!

Burd, great shots of the goose with the tc.

GP, great shot of the bunting. Love the blue.

Red, have a wonderful time at the cabin and congrats on the nest.

Elphaba, love the waxwings!! Great looking shrike too! That "surprised" shot of the Night Heron is beautiful!

Finally finishing up photos from a couple days ago. I liked this one of the Bald Eagle.

Dave, great shot of the spooker fly-off. Hope those strips are working for you, we have them over our windows and the swallows are still running into them.

Caught this Scrub Jay on a take-off.

I rarely see this female Bullock's Oriole. Guess she's still busy with the nest.

Wonderful shots Duc! You did a great job with the Eagle! Love the Jay and the beautiful Orioles.
Thanks for including the Tree Swallows ; their adorable!

Can't believe how fast this thread is going. :-)

(Zone 1)

Dave: Your photo's are outstanding! I love the Bluebirds, such a sweet pair in that first picture and I just love the one perched at the top of the Bradford Pear tree! The ones of the Junco and BB in flight are really cool!

reddirttree: How cool ... look forward to seeing pic's of the BB babies when those eggs hatch! Have a nice trip wherever you are headed and don't forget your camera! ^_^

Burd: I don't have a clue what a converter is but those are really awesome picture's of the Canadian Goose in flight!

Nanny: What a great shot of that Red-winged! Maybe someone here knows about them and can tell us why some have more vivid and larger wing patches? And, that is really a nice shot of the Grackle in flight!

Elphaba: Ditto to what you said about gasping when looking through this thread! These Bird photo threads are a great way to start and end a day! Looks like you've got the Cedar Waxwings in Texas now ... aren't they just the prettiest little birds? I wish I could see them here year round but it's fun to glimpse the first arrivals and watch them for a month or so during winter down here. That Golden Crowned Night Heron is really great, what a beautiful bird!

duc: Pretty Flicker and what a neat picture of the Scrub Jay getting set to take flight. The Bullock's Oriole's are so pretty and that Bald Eagle is amazing!

Only thing I have to share is the same old, same old backyard birds. This Northern Cardinal was perched in the Sugarberry tree just singing his heart out a couple of hours ago.

The light was horrible when I took this one. I think it's an immature Red-bellied Woodpecker but I'm not certain, it has the reddish on it's belly and a red patch on the back of it's head.

Goodness this thread has "flown" by!! It is exciting to see all the great shots of the birds you are all getting...way too many to comment on them all since I am so far behind.

Dave and Red...congrats on the BB eggs...hope to see babies soon!

BTW Dave...I just love the Blues on the Bradford Pear tree...the prettiest I have ever seen.

It has been in the 80's so the yard and all the weeds are taking up all my time. I am hoping the southern breeze will bring some of the summer birds.

Stafford County, VA

Thanks Rose. Here is one more.

Thumbnail by 2dCousinDave
Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Duc, WOW! That eagle shot is UNBELIEVABLE!!! I liked the rest too.

Plantladylin, I like your singing cardinal. The shrike was singing too, but I just couldn't capture it! I've seen the waxwings out in the country but not at my house until now. I think they came by to see if the Mulberries were ripe yet. It's amazing how they remember stuff.

Rose, 80s here too. The butterflies have been by looking for my pentas which froze this year. They seemed so amazed that the pentas were gone. I just went and picked up some but it will take a while for them to fill in the way they used to be.

Dave, amazing bluebird shots!

This pic might be a bit blurry. I can't tell for sure b/c I can't really see anymore. He was being very vocal. I thought it was a cormorant b/c it was so dark, but now I think it must an Anhinga - bill shape, tail length, yellow on the feet - what do you think?

Thumbnail by Elphaba

LOOK! Another summer resident is back! Great Crested Flycatcher.

Thumbnail by Elphaba
Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Boys Elphaba, looks like we skipped Spring, going from Winter directly to summer! At least our temp. heat up fast in the Southern states. Goodness, I just love that pic. of the Cormorant! I've never seen one that close up (living by a large water body). Congrats on the whatchumacalit flycatcher! (summer resident). Woohooo!

Marlton, NJ

Great shots Dave and Elphaba!! Nice to see the Flycatcher!

I just watched Carolina Chickadee's in both my nest boxes. One bird kept handing things in to another. I hope they both get occupied. :-)

Plantladylin will be starting the new Daily Pics thread later on.

Edited for-forgetfulness :-)
