Here is a male Purple Finch. We still have several around but not as many as a few weeks ago.

We still have many White-crowned Sparrows...they are always the last to leave in the spring.

Quote from VA_Wild_Rose :
Since I'm fairly new to "birdwatching" per se, why is it that the female Red-bellied did not come to the feeders all winter. What makes her stay away until spring?

I think it is a territorial thing. Previous winters here we had a female that laid claim to our yard and ruled during the winter. We named her Sassy...she was quite the character. She disappeared late in winter 2009. We still had red-bellieds thru the summer though that brought juvies.

Last fall a very bold, fussy male seemed to take over the yard. This is the one I have named Apolo. He would chase off a female we also had coming. She popped back into the picture about 6-8 weeks ago, coming occasionally. Now they are both here on a daily basis. Even at the same time sometimes. Not sure if they are pairing up or each have other mates yet.

So as Margaret would say.... you wanted the long answer ...right?? :)

Oh and this is all just my opinion based on my observations....

Rose...so pretty...can't wait to see BB babies!

Our male Goldfinch are not quite as far along as yours.....from this morning!

Oh Rose, congrats on the Blue Birds 6-eggs. Love your Cardinal especially the currious look of the female. Ahhh the sparrow appears bigger than he's actually is -- pretty one. Is it me, or housefinches appear to be real dark this time of year?

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

He's a pretty boy Lily...most of our Goldfinches are going through the homely stage but in a few weeks they will be gorgeous! I haven't had very many House Finches so I don't know about their coloring. And yes...I am hoping we have lots of BB babies this year!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

On the old thread, which went by so quickly-
Rose, that male House Finch is pretty the way it's kinda orange-red. Loved the TT fluffed up.

Lily, pretty geese with the blossoms.

GrannyG, your jay is beautiful. Wonderful photos of the wp too.

Linda, adorable shots of the nest and Barn Swallows.

Margaret, love that photo of the honeyeater! Thanks for starting the new thread with such wonderful photos. That little Black Cormorant is gorgeous and I loved the different honeyeaters. So different from each other on the last two.

Nanny, your little sparrow's coloring fits right in with the surroundings.

Mcash, great sightings of the hawks. Glad the ss missed the prey.

Missy, so glad you were able to catch the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher-that's really an extraordinary bird.

WildRose, great job with the finch, warblers and mocker!

Gras, beautiful colors on the mallard couple. I feel sorry for them in the icy water.

GP, great capture on the ibis!

Red, great timing with the mocker.

Nanny, cute crow. My guys are nesting too and it's fun to watch them carrying nesting material. This morning my birds left me a few large sticks in one of the birdbaths. Guess it got thirsty doing all that hard work. Adorable photo of your goldfinch too!

Rose, again, your photos are all so pretty. I especially liked that female cardinal. I'm so excited for you and your bb family.

This juvenile Bald Eagle was keeping the nest protecting Crows busy yesterday.

VA_Wild_Rose - nice pics of the male and female Myrtle Warbler :-)

Grasmussen your mallards on the frozen water are really sharp - nice.

gardenpom - you couldn't have picked a better shot to show us than that White Ibis flying over - really nice.

reddirtretiree - your idea of forcing insects to move sounds good to me. That's a clear pic of the white wing flashes often associated with a Mocker.

nanny_56 - thanks for the explanation of "poof" - makes since, course, its never happened to me :-) AND nice pic of the crow, to boot.

Mrs_Ed - I enjoyed your shot of the White Pelican AND all the Coots. I've never seen a W Pelican, but there are lots of Coots (and Mallards and Canada Geese) at the park.

reddirtretiree - I like the Red-shouldered hawk, but your pic of the Waxwing is great.

GrannyGrunt - I'll say, that Grackle looks evil. AND I've about decided to stop buying Nyjer seed and just go with Black Oil Sunflower seed. I find that my Goldfinches like one about as well as the other, and B-O Sunflower seed is a whole lot cheaper.

Lily_love - Quote, "Hack, please keep me posted on your BB's experiences. Feeding them and attracting them to our back yard is a fun project. If you ever down this part of the woods. Give us a holler, DH and I will be glad to give you a boat ride to watch those Swallows. I've yet able to capture a close up pic. of them however." Thanks Lily, if I ever get some BB, I guarantee you, you'll know about it. The boat ride sounds like fun. I'm a ole home body, though, but it would be fun.

dellrose - Poofing - Now, I've done that before, but in my case I'm typing so fast that I hit two, maybe three keys, at once and things lock up. Then I have to "back-out" of what I was typing, thus losing it. Makes me angry. AND your male Goldfinch looks like mine, haven't gotten all their yellow yet. AND that is one fine shot of a White-crowned Sparrow.

ducbucin - that California Towhee sure is enjoying its bath.

New arrivals at my feeder today - 2 Indigo Buntings, my first!

Here's a yellow-rumped Warbler looking head-on at it. Most of my Y-r Warbler pics are from the side, head-on is a rarity for me.

Hey, gazergirl - we were cross-posting :-)

You took good pics of the Indigo Buntings and the Redheaded Wp - real nice.

Hack, cute photos. That robin sure looks pretty. You must have lots of worms for them to hunt. Beautiful warbler. Great job with the composite.

Gazergirl, you're so lucky to see those indigos. Great red-headed too.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Beautiful shots Duc but that Towhee is just priceless! There is nothing cuter than a bird taking a bath!!

Hack..nice shots, I still haven't seen any Warblers...still looking though. You really get the birds in your area and I think it is great that you have become a bird watcher!

G girl..Wow on the Idigo's and Red-headed WP!

Hi VA, In my case the females don't seem to come around too much till just before and through the nesting season. It's been that way here for a number of years. I have read that the male and female do not like to eat at the same feeder at the same time but some other people have a different experience.

Rose, Beautiful birds! Love Mrs Bluebird!

Sweet Goldfinch nanny!

Duc, Great shots of the Eagles, Jay and cute Towhee bathing!

Nice pics Hack! Love the Warbler!

Gazer, Congratulations on the Buntings!!!! love the Red-headed Woodpecker too!

Wonderful photo's everyone! I don't know how I quit watching this forum ... I really shouldn't mess around with my settings as I always screw things up and end up missing out on a lot! I'm heading back through previous threads to gaze at all the pretty birdies!

Since the weather is warming up, all of the Robins and most of the Red-winged Blackbirds have headed back north. I miss the Robin's already, we had so many visiting this year! I took this photo last week ... haven't seen a Robin since.

I saw a single Robin yesterday. I was a little surprised, I thought they had all left. Here's one more pic of a Grackle...I'll upload the final pics tomorrow.
