Thanks terri... my BS seems to be disappearing... or at least not growing any more! haha.. & the roses are in bloom & where I cut off the affected parts are starting to re grow!!
best roses for Texas
Does anyone have any feedback on NEEM oil? How effective is it for BS, or for any other pesky problems....?
Cheryl, I know this is late in the game here, but have you gone to Weston Gardens in south Fort Worth? They have a wonderful selection of roses that do well here in our area and they have a fabulous rose garden where you can see them growing.
Rob, for BS, you can spray a concoction of baking soda and water.
Oh Stephanie!! THANK YOU... I never though of baking soda & water!! As my poor roses are suffering! Not a lot of BS but enough to make the leaves fall off!! I will give it a try! Any particular ratio??
I only have a few roses myself, but I help with my dad's rose garden. We have had GREAT luck using only neem. It takes care of black spot, thrips, and aphids. He has several that are very susceptible to BS, so he sprays routinely, once a month. Their foliage is beautiful.
I also have Joseph's Coat at my own house and can highly recommend it. On mine, some of the flowers are a tangerine color, some are yellow, and some are more of a deep coral. Most have more than one color on the same flower. Some change every day as they age. Very pretty. Big thorns, though.
Has anyone tried the Peggy Martin rose? Supposedly it survived standing in 20 feet of water during Hurricane Katrina and lived! It was in the garden of Mrs. Peggy Martin and was named after her.
WOW stephanie... & no, I have not heard of that rose before so couldn't help you there.
I have Peggy Martin. I bought it as a gallon plant over 2 years ago. It's very vigorous and now over 15 feet wide. Vossner has it to, if I remember correctly. It's pretty much a once bloomer with a few sporadic blooms in the fall. Here it is blooming in late April (on the fence).
Besides Peggy, my top recommendations for tough roses for Texas have to be Ducher and Souvenir de la Malmaison.
I bought a peggy martin, I did not know it only bloomed once!

What a lovely setting for such a pretty rose!
Thanks Terri. :)
I just re-read some of this thread... Nery, I removed New Dawn this spring. I do have to say that it was in unamended clay, in partial sun, with pretty much no supplemental water and it grew and bloomed. But, it never bloomed more than once and it's thorny, stiff, 20 foot canes were too much to handle. I replaced it with Moonlight - not sure if it was the right choose though.
I have a Climbing Fairy, given to me by another dg-er. Last fall, I planted it against a north facing fence (50+ feet from Peggy). I buried one cane at the time and it rooted very quickly (so it will probably form a thicket if you let it). It's just a baby and it just finished blooming. It was my latest bloomer in the yard. Pretty little light pink blooms.
I tried Neem for a few months last spring on a few Hybrid Teas and a Floribundas that had major blackspot. I did not see any difference. The Hybrid Teas (Peace, Tropicana, & Don Juan) were removed in the fall because I was tired of the blackspot.
It seems as if my BS is not spreading... though the grasshoppers are coming! I really dislike them the most!!!! Since I do not use pesticides I can't always catch them to kill them. I heard that soldier beetles will kill them but I don't think I have any in this area!
Lovely!
