What Inspired Your Name?

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

I was commenting about how interesting /thought provoking some screen names are and that I thought others were fairly clear about how the names were chosen (like the proper names.) A friend said ' oh I thought those proper names must be names of flowers or shrubs.' I confess I never thought of that. So how about it - will you share how you chose your screen name here on DG? I will start even tho some of you already know. When I signed up on DG - it was right around the time we had to let our Rosie go - she had developed a malignant mass in her spleen that the Vet said could rupture at any time ....I just couldn't let her be home alone when it happened......when I signed up on DG, I was very much Missing Rosie. (Some folks D-Mailed me and asked if I was missing Rosie O'Donnell (smile)

Mine is an English corruption of Guan Yin...

I try to maintain compassion and it's a daily reminder that not everyone is as fortunate as I.

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Perfect! I am so glad I posted the question now each time I see a post from you, I will remember that.

I didn't think anyone would see the thread....I posted and I quickly got moved to another page there were a lot of new threads started.

(Zone 7a)

LOL People ask me all the time about the name.

Sorry about your Rosie. We almost lost our kitty Monty a year ago. I think most of us here know the pain of losing a beloved friend.

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Yes, it was (still is) rough.

It took my friend's comment (about her theory that screen names on DG were related to names of favorite plants/trees etc., to get me wondering about the screen names. I knew about the Rosie O'Donnell assumption from queries I have received, but I wondered if others just figured that a favorite rose bush of mine had died or been stolen. ;0)

When I sent my DD to preschool I found I had three afternoons a week to do something for myself. I rented a little cottage, got a small loan from the bank, and started an antique business. DH and I would go to auctions and pick up pieces for my store. I didn't know what to name my business until I found an old cigar box with the name "Pastime" on it. Since running the store was just my past time, I decided to call it Pastime Antiques. That was from 1976-1980. Since then I've had Pastime Perennials from 1992-96 which ended because of illness and a collapsed greenhouse. Since I retired from my job of 20 years in 2005, I've Pastime Daylilies and Graphic Design. So that's how I got my screen name. Would you say I'm in a rutt?

(Zone 7a)

Nope. I think you've found something that fits you and you're sticking with it. Kind of cool, actually.

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

No rutt - just an interesting life!! And it is 'past time' you realized it!!

(thunder)Wildwood, FL(Zone 9a)

mine is real simple.....I am barefoot whenever possible ^_^, my name starts with T.

Waterman, IL(Zone 5a)

It's hard to keep shoes on my feet too.

bump

This is really neat, and so many stories about where the "screen names" come from. Thank you so much for starting this thread!

Ames, NE(Zone 5b)

Hello

My name is Tubby

Where did that come from

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

grin (tell us tubby!!)

(thunder)Wildwood, FL(Zone 9a)

and tell us Tallulah ♪♫♥♪♪♫♫

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

My DH's screen name is JPGASMAN .......... I warned him against that one.........

(He sells /industrialmedical/research gases -- it doesn't have a THING to do with my cooking!!)

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

My screen name is a nickname I was given at 14 when I went to work at a stable as a groom and guide. There were several of us with a name that when called out would send us all running to see what the boss wanted. So they gave each of us a nickname. At least I didn't get named Mouse like one of the girls!!!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

ok - my name is from Tallulah Bankhead, cuz when I was 17 I took acting lessons. One of the coaches said I was a strong willed woman, like Tallulah Bankhead, and it stuck in my mind. When I got online in '92, I remembered what he'd said, so that's how I chose the name.

Love it!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Gosh I would of been so creative, but I guess my name fits me but only by mistake. I had no idea what I was getting into when I joined DG.....

I am the happiest in the garden!

Marin, CA(Zone 9b)

I waited a long time to get married ( by Belgian standards) so when I did get married, I used it as my screen name, happy as a bug in a rug!
I took my husband's name, and that is not done in Belgium, so I proudly rub it in!
See, not quite as straight forward as y'all had thought I bet? ;-)

My name is Christie.

(thunder)Wildwood, FL(Zone 9a)

Nice to meet ya Mrs Colla!!

Marin, CA(Zone 9b)

Now, after 4 years of marriage, you may drop the mrs. Colla and call me Christie ;-)

Nice to meet you too BarefootT!

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Ha Ha Christie -- you gave me a laugh. After four years of marriage and a new baby all I wanted to be 'called' was FROM A LONG DISTANCE!!!

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

my nickname at work is 'smiley', and my kids are always calling me for something (( mom?... mom!! )) and the 343 is part of my address.

I should have thought about it a little more, but I was so glad to have found such a great website, I didn't think about it enough.

Great idea, missingrosie!

Marin, CA(Zone 9b)

Missingrosie, you are funny!

For me, LiveLaughLove is my favorite saying... I love all three and I try to stay true to them! The PA part is for Pennsylvania. My husband and I transplanted from MD to PA in 2007.

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

This thread is awesome, I love reading about how everyone chose their user names, good stuff to share.

Mine is way easy, no thought here:

My name is Christine, my mom has called me Crissy from birth, the first letter of my last name is R, and 'Christine' was already taken when I signed up so I used Crissy. LOL!

Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

This is a fun thread! Mine is easy, tho... "avian" (bird) nut. I have parrots, and love to watch any indoor/outdoor bird!

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

I love birds. We had a canary named Avis!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I displayed my lack of creativity! Actually, having retired an email name--magnificent5-- which I was tired of, I thought I better pick a name easy to type and not likely to annoy people...Now I wish I had been more creative, but can't think of any I like better. It's my name and middle initial. But also, there was a song in the 70's maybe, Sally yyy, Sally g, Why you go and do that thing you did to me?

If I could go and be planty, I'd work on *salix/ salici_* which means willow, and I am tall and willowy you might say (bean pole you also might say)

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

I have heard Mustang Sally!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Apparently I had a fling wih Robert Palmer too. and Eric Clapton! Must seem like a fun name

Fayetteville, AR(Zone 7b)

Mustang Sally is an awesome song! Love it!!

Waterloo, IA

mine is from one of my horses' show names, Kaprys. It means "capricious" in Polish (both my horses are from Poland). We call him Arnold around the barn. Our other one is Olivetto (no meaning in Polish). We call him Ollie :)

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

See, how could we know that? !!! Thanks for sharing and now we have learned something.

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

I have always loved Judy Garland and Liza Minelli. So when I got two kittens I named one of them Liza. And since they were so small and scampered all over the house, I started calling them "the mice". I got my screen name from my "Liza Mouse".

Over the winter I rescued two inky, shiny black kittens that were all legs and eyes so they got dubbed, "the spiders". Spike Spider and Stella Spider.

I know....I need a life.

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

But it's a great story!

Waterloo, IA

cute! I have a black kitty I call my little ink blot... her name is Sepia (like squid ink). I need a life too :)
