Snow Is Gone/ Critter Chat

you could not pay me to live there CALIF I Like it High & Dry :))

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

There are places in Calif that are just beautiful. I reallly liked Northern Calif with the redwood trees. It was cool there and you could walk for miles on the beach and find really good driftwood and things on the beach. And walking in the redwoods was like going back in time. You get deep enough in those woods you felt like you might get to see some ancient creature roaming around. The rugged coast line, beautiful stones on the beaches.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

I hated to leave northern California during my divorce, but I couldn't afford to live there as a single mother! It is beautiful, but the economy there was bad even back in '97 when I left. I can't imagine it now.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I tried to move there in 1987. At that time I was an LVN and was getting pd $15.00 an hour in San Bernadino, Calif. For the same job in Eureka, CA. I was getting pd $6.50/hr. Now I understand thta they are paying better, but I left Eureka and went to work in Ventura, CA for $17.50/hr.

I had looked at a 40 acre place for sale while I was there. It had a 3 bedroom house, 2 bathroom, library, outbuildings and a tractor and completely furnished including the dishes for the kitchen. It had a 100 foot frontage on a salmon river. It was a beautifull place with redwood trees and a meadow. Deer grazed in the meadow. Price: $75,000.00. Now that same place is on the market for $350,000.00. Wish I could of bought it back in the 80's.

40 acres in NJ would be a few million

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Wow, what an incredible deal that would've been, Marti, but if you don't have the money, it might as well be a few million. I can only hope I live long enough to have my own place again.
Sounds like NJ is as expensive as NY, huh onewish?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

some parts are worse

Betty, you've been doing a lot of work. I remember pics of your gardens last year and they are incredibly beautiful. Can't wait til you post pics of blooms this year and bet you can't wait to see them again too.

Hey, look at all the ex-Northern California girls. I'm one too and went through the Loma Prieta earthquake in '89 when I lived just south of San Fran. Other than the shakes, in more ways than one, it is undoubtedly the most beautiful magical place I've ever lived. Many days after work I'd pick up a steamed Dungeness crab and a sourdough boule, take a drive up and down Highway 1 drinking in the mountain views on one side and the mighty Pacific rolling in and crashing on the rocks on the other side. Trips to Big Basin and being in awe of the redwood forests were like being in a cathedral, so cool under their canopies even on a hot day. You just knew you were were walking through one of the most special places on Earth. And what about the Palm trees, African Lilies that seemed to bloom everywhere, and bouganvillas that I especially miss. Oh and the vineyards in Napa Valley too. Guess you can tell I miss those days and mini excursions.

I lived in Sylmar when the 1971 earthquake tore the town apart. I worked at a donut shop and had just finished making 3500 donuts in 5.5 hours. All the donuts got ruined and the building went 11 inches off its foundation with us in it. Heck of a ride!!!!
Than I lived in Santa Paula, in Ventura County when the place got torn up with an earthquake in the 1990"s. Darn gone shaky state!!!

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Wow.....talk about rock n' roll!!

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Yes it was. The Olive View Hospital just north of were I was fell down. It had 2 towers one on each end. The quake came from the north traveled south. The south tower fell with that shake, then the rebound happened and the shaking came back south to north and the north tower went down. When It was over, the bottom 2 floors of the hospital where collasped. The bottom floor was the ER. and parking for ambulances. It was all crushed. Most of the people that died in that quake where at that hospital.
The street in front of our store blew up and threw great pieces of blacktop into the air and down on cars.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

See, your talking about the quakes caused another one in California this afternoon.

Betty, that is a great pond. Is it stocked? I got a catalog selling trout and bass planters the other day. That is quite a windbreak you have there. We are having high winds today and tomorrow so I am in the house reorganizing a few areas.

Oh Boy, my DH just switched on the first baseball game of the year. It is a good think I have a lap top and love to read. I think baseball games on TV at night should not be allowed. Remember when football had Monday night football. Now it is Sunday, Monday and Thursday night.

I did enjoy the Butler/Michigan NCAA basketball game yesterday. I was cheering for Butler and it was exciting. I watched over my shoulder while I cleaned house. I always root for the underdog.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

What? Another quake in CA? Where, please!? My son lives there! Off to check the news sites...

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Below San Diego on the Border of California and Mexico. Felt in Nevada and Arizona but appears to be no death and no major damage. Went right up the San Andreas Fault. The Arizona/Nevada cities that felt the quake were close to the California/Mexico Border. They said on the news it had been rumblings for days. Hope the quake got it off its chest. Sending prayers to protect your son and everyone. In Las Vegas we did not feel a thing. But of course we lways rock and roll. The North ridge Quake shook us good.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

Whew, just finished reading the news article, thanks! My son is up near San Francisco and his Dad lives in Sacramento.
Wow, Marti, that must've been a terrifying experience for you.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Yes it was.

Yesterday's quake hit in Baja Mexico. Not alot there mostly desert. But my son felt it in the north end of Los Angeles County. That fault line is doing some moving again.

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Sharon I find baseball at night a great way to fall asleep. :))

Don't know how you do that earthquake thing ladies. No way could I live out there. No way..I'm a nervous wreck in a windstorm never mind the ground moving.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

After you've lived with them for awhile, you don't get used to them, but you develope a pholosophy about them. You see earthquakes are just Mother Nature rearranging furniture in her house. Yesterday's quake was Mother Natures why of spring cleaning. SHE MOVE ALL THE FURITURE AT ONE TIME!!!
Thats when I'm unhappy with her.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Thought of you all when I watched news of the quake last night..hope you and your families are safe..

Yes, do put a few fishies in, but with blue herons and kitties, no sure that is a wise idea...

Everything looks a little sad right now with no growth and all garden art out but I know what's coming..

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

WormsluvSharon, Butler may no longer be an under dog. We will have to see what happens tonight!!!

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Well points moved from 6 to 8. That means for you that do not have gaming in your state, I should say legal gaming, that all the money is going on Butler. I am still rooting for Butler. Just hope it is a good and exciting game. The town is packed with basketball fans from all over for the over the top March Madness final game parties. You have to see these parties to believe them. To bad I got old....

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

WOW, what a game. Come on Butler. 49 seconds left. one point. Play by Play. Butler just got the ball.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

14.6 seconds left, Butler has the ball. One point behind. GO BUTLER...........

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Sorry to kidnap this thread but I had to vent somewhere. GO BUTLER.... Could not get the ball in from out of bounds. Time out

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Shot made and missed, 12 seconds left and DUKE has the ball. Butler loses by 2 points. Well it was a great game. Butler has nothing to be ashamed about. A very small private school just about beat the big DUKE. In my eyes, they did beat them. Sorry if I have upset any Duke lovers. It is a personal thing that I will get over when I am dead.....GREAT GAME. Now back to gardening.....And I am so sorry. I needed to vent somewhere and my doctor was not available. Probably watching the game. Love you all. Butler won because they lost by 2 points instead of 6 to 8. So, I do have another life besides gardening. But I do not gamble.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Our Toronto BlueJays are playing at home tonight..they've won 5 in a row..can one hope for 6..the dome top will be up, little too cold to be playing without the dome off...

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Betty, good luck tonight!!!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Oooh forgot to check and see if they won..not a very good baseball fan am I?
