Elphaba... that Night Heron is awesome!

I have a question for my birding friends here...
Hubby and I have been walking in the woods behind out complex for the past two evenings. This is where I spotted the Pileated. I heard a GHO hooting last night, so we tried to figure out where he/she might be. Went back this evening... same thing. I think we are within 50 yards of it, but still haven't spotted the owl. Yeah, yeah, I know.... that's their whole point.... not to be seen! I did spot this nest yesterday, and I thought it had enough sticks to be an owl nest. Today's hoots were heard very close to this tree and nest.
What do you think?
To Hack: what I originally did that attracted Bluebirds was to include peanuts in my mix for my feeders. When I realized that the Bluebirds were feeding on my mix, I included chopped raisins. I also put up the nesting box in an area that was quiet and where I had seen the Bluebirds flying around. My success is a combination of luck and observation.
Nice shots everyone,Ive been watching our birds ,not taking photos, just saw a red tailed hawk circling above the house ,no camera in hand !!

Owls don't actually build nests, they just use old ones left behind by other birds. So if this nest is new, it'll be from something else, maybe a crow or similar. If it is an old nest from last year, then there's a chance an owl might decide to use it.

Hack....bluebirds also love bird baths. Mine are quite particular, too. They like it very clean and not too deep. Before I had success with the nest box, I was getting them in the yard with a well maintained bath. Good luck!!
Lily, glad your little phoebe has returned. Hope you'll be watching another family soon. How exciting for you to see the eagle. Congrats!
Elphaba, sorry about your snake oppor. missed-I guess. Your Golden-crowned Herons are just gorgeous!!
Nanny, beautiful pair of doves. They're so sweet.
Wild Rose, I do hope you'll be seeing a family in that nest.
Red, sorry about the blizzard. Love that roadrunner. My friend tells me they're usually too fast to photograph. Nice job.
Yesterday was full of ups and downs for me. First, my first Rufous hummingbird showed up at the feeder. Then in the evening, one of my tree swallows ran into the window and I later had to put it down because of its injuries. I thought it was going to regain its strength, but I guess the injury was too bad.
One of my Brewer Blackbirds puffing up for a female.
Arrrg, Duc. Sorry about the incidence with the swallow. Up & down that's how it goes someday. Your Lesser Goldfinch is the cutest. Hope it's a better day today. I was so thrilled with my Eagle, there are more time spend out there by its nest -- like today. I'm hoping to see more of her construction of the nest, and hopefully the laying of eggs and raising chicks (?). This is my very first opportunity. I'm beside myself.
Thanks all for any tips on attracting Blue Birds. My BB broused the birdhouse I have, but apparently didn't sign the lease!
Hack, we can compare notes, on trying to lure the lovely BBs into our backyard.
Love that Road Runner and everyone else's pics.
Pelle, hope you're feeling better and that you get to see my Eagle too.

Red, I'm green with envy on your BBs. Love that Road Runners, the closest I came to was the Pacific Plover in Hawaii. Hope the weather lightens up soon.
So many outstanding photos!!!!! Too many to comment on but please know what joy they give me and I'm sure everyone else who visits!! Keep em coming!
Wooohooo, I'm glad to see your posting Pelle. Amos, welcome! It's always a treat to see the Pileated WP. Congrats!
Nice to see you Pelle...and nice to see all the great shots everyone is posting. Of course there are many that I am very jealous of...but won't go there...LOL!
We are having rain storms all morning and my computer is being very bad today...oh well, gotta get the taxes done anyway. Just one window shot to share from a little bit ago...lots of Goldfinches as you can see!
Oh Rose, that is incredible with all those Goldfinch! I see a female Purple Finch too!
Nice shots nanny! I had a few Cowbird here today too; I love their sounds.

Pelle, yesterday I was in a thin t-shirt outside and I was sweating. Today, it's 43 degrees! Unbelievable. I heard it might freeze Monday morning. Everything has leafed out. Seedlings are up. Stuff is blooming and it's going to freeze. I can't believe it.
Rose, I am AMAZED by all those gold finches. You finch hog you!
Nanny great hawk shot!
I'm just green with envy over all the wonderful eagle shots, and the blue birds, and the roadrunner! Wow, just amazing stuff.
Here's a White-winged dove from yesterday. It's raining and nasty out today.
Lovely Dove, Elphaba. Red nice ones of the gulls.
This isn't very clear due to the lighting, but it's a nice contrast in sizes of the Brown-crowned Nuthatch and the Redbellied Woodpecker. Alphaba, a couple of our friends went and look up the Eagle (one we saw), and the couple spotted both of the Eagles at the same time at the Nest. Our next mission is follow up with the Chicks if we're ever so lucky.
Beautiful Dove Elphaba!!
Nice Ring-billed Gulls red!
Wow Lily that is a nice size comparison!
I have had about as many light-colored Juncos this year as dark, but had an unusual visitor during our weekend snowstorm. I posted this for confirmation on the ID forum. Slobird thinks it's an Oregon Junco. Looks like one to me, but I'm no expert. Anyway, thought I would post here for everyone to see.
I also had some American Pipits during the snow storm. OU listserv shows others had them. Apparently they are migrating and were grounded by this blizzard. I'll post a pic later. Not a bird I'd expect to see up on this red dirt hill.
such great photos ,I need to sit in the bird watching chair with camera in hand !!! I had the shovel in my hand instead !!! We did have the wood ducks come for a visit,we have a small wet land, they ck it out every yr,but they dont stay, maybe this yr they will.
reddirtretiree - nice Cedar Waxwing. I haven't seen any in about a week.
nanny_56 - you're right, she is a pretty Cardinal - maybe just a might near-sighted.
ducbucln - Quote, "Hack, glad your birds love the logs. I just love watching the birds on mine." me, too. but I may near some more holes in them, they run out fast. And I really do like your Tree Sparrows.
Lily_love - your Brown Thrasher really looks nice. And you last pic was blurrred, not from camera shake, but from the len's auto focus seeing that near limb. When I see that happen, I go to manual focus. Comparing notes is a good idea, I'm still trying to draw BB.
Elphaba - Your pics of the Golden Crowned Night Herons are spectacular.
gazergirl - thanks for the info about adding peanuts to your suet mix.
reddirtretiree - nice pic of the Roadrunner.
Amos55 - I like your pic of the Pileated Woodpecker.
dellrose - Goodness! the Goldfinches have covered you up.
nanny_56 - WOW, great shot of a Cooper's Hawk
I'll be back later to post a few pics.
Hack
A shot of one of the American Pipits from yesterday. I've only seen one this a.m. The light is better, but it was gone before I could get a pic. I have 20 or so migratory sparrows feeding as I type. Still cold, north wind gusting 20-40 mph. But, I got a report that Common Snipe are also grounded out in the flats by the Canadian River. Think I'll take a drive and see what's out there. The coming warm weather should bring in a lot of peeps out there this coming week.
Love the Pipit red!
Nice one Rose! I can't wait to see them flying over twice a day.
I saw my first robin yesterday morning, it had snowed that night but I saw her get a worm....Does this really mean it will warm up soon? I am so ready

It has been a strange, long winter, even down South. Hack I'll keep you posted on my Blue Birds-attraction adventure. Thanks for the tip on the photography. I appreciate you.
Rarely Brown-headed Cowbirds will venture out alone. But here is a pair briefly stopping by to check out our backyard's feeder-- just a little while ago. I'll return later for more pics. of Eastern Towhee and other...it's raining now, I need to shut the pc down for a while.
Nice ones Lily!! sorry I can't help with sexing.
Yes it is Lily!!! Congratulations! The male Towhee is gorgeous too!
