whitebear, actually, it was meant for exactly what you said. But I generate much too much yard waste to use it as I composter, as you can see by the size of the compost pile. But I keep it nearby if I need to screen any. I had also read that a compost pile needs to sit on the ground to get the necessary micro-organisms for making good compost, otherwise you would need to add them if you use a tumbling barrel type. I also have a compost bin at the back of the house, off the kitchen, for food scraps. I try to keep things simple and as cheap as possible, while still getting the job done.
whitebear's greenhouse saga back at it
hay rockgardner i'm with ya on the ground method. plus i spray mine with worm casting tea
to add microorganisms to it, plus i gather microorganisms from the forests to add to the pile and my soil. i would have a tub outside my kitchen but i got 2 young boys to be mean to so i make them take it out to the pile. lol i'm so mean
whitebear
It's good for the soul! Well, at least the soil. Goodnight Whitebear.
Whitebear
you are too funny..... as well as talented.... That would be one way to get them to eat everything on their plate, which means less in the compost pile....LOL (I do know you don't put meat in the pile for those that might think I was meaning everything)
Hay, just wondering what type of soil mixture you plant your seedlings and then when it is time to move them up to the next size pot what you use?
I've asked on some other forums but I'm really interested in what you have come up with provided you don't mind sharing?
Janet
hay meadowyck no don't mind sharing i like mixing 50 % worm castings to 50 % coconut core when i can afford but 50% organic potting soil will work to. but this year i'm going with 50% worm casting and 50 % compost. as for when i move to the next pot size i usually watch the roots as soon as they will hold the soil mostly together i will upgrade. i try not to wait till the roots are crowded because i fill this will stunt them a little. just my way might not be the right way though. you know me i don't go with the crowd. mostly because i'm in the country and can't find the crowd lol
whitebear
oh and night rockgardner "a little late"
Whitebear, I'm interested in your wormcastings setup. Did you tell us on another thread somewhere that I could read?
whitebear, I'm so glad you are back on DG, every time I read your comments I get a bigger smile. Your energy level is amazing, If I could do half the things you do in a day my yard and house would be looking good. Keep up the good work and the sharing of your ideas.
hay msrobin no i don't think i did "that i can remember" i'll see if i can get some photos up and do a little info pack by this week end "i hope" i got to go and plant 2 other peoples gardens for them this week besides working in mine. "no rest for the crazy people". i'm planting my dads on Thursday for him sense he just got out of the hospital. and i'm going to plant one of my friends garden for his wife because he just past away 2 weeks ago and it's bugging her to see the garden not in. i learned a lot from him he was 83 and been farming all his life. the real sad part about his passing is the knowledge that was lost. seems like most of my friends are about 30 to 40 years older than me. i guess i was born at the wrong time lol.
whitebear
hay cathy4 thanks for those kind words. it's funny i fell i lazy when i set down, i should be out there worked by car light or something.
plus i'm still a young pup by my friends standards plus i love when my son's 20 year old friends come over and help split wood or something and try to keep up with me. sooo funny
by the way i'm 45 or 44 or 46 can't ever remember people think i'm crazy that way but never
gave much care to age. had one native american friend who didn't even know the year he was born just that he was born 2 moons after the river ran over it's banks for 2 days.
Whitebear
Thanks for sharing your blend... when I started my winter seeds this year I used coil (1st time using this stuff) and worm castings. I got a guy down the road from me where I get mine, he is a lot like you..... good thing... as I love hashing out ideas with him. I hear ya with friends who are older and thinking you were born in the wrong year....
If you do your worm casting, please start another thread that way everyone will find ya.
I'm starting a small worm farm this spring... Got to as we have too much kitchen waste and I would love to try the worms... Gonna move them inside during the winter provided we are still here this next winter...
Janet
I second that motion for a seperate worm casting thread.
No major hurry. Get to it when you can. I'm sure the recipients of your garden installations will be extremely grateful. You're a good man, Whitebear!
He (or she ) that is afraid of failure WILL NEVER INVENT .:)
Holty
Every time I visit this thread I smile. Didn't realize how much I missed hearing all of the things you have going and all the great ideas you have. So glad you are back, I learn so much from all the idea sharing. Your energy level is contagious!
Do strawberries need a lot of food?
strawberries like organic compost and a good organic fertilizer 10-10-10 at planting time but no need a lot of it threw the season or you will get more leaf than fruit just like tomatoes. i like planting mine in a 33%compost 33%composted manure 33%soil and 1% vermiculite under ground cover and thats it then i water with compost tea and once with worm casting tea every other week.
p.s. sorry for not writing much lots of planting going on.
We had a wonderfully sunny day on Friday. So I decided to clean out the green house. I knew that rain was coming, but I thought it was for Sunday. Well, it started on Friday night and has not let up since! It is still pouring here.
I remember stating once that it doesn't rain in Los Gatos in the summer. (which is true) However, it does rain at other times. Someone posted me and said that they know it rains in Los Gatos, it just rains all at once. Well, they are right!
We have had a lot of rain this season, which is good, because the last two years we our well ran out of water. Not so good for the plants!
Time to go out in the rain!
Enjoy it while you have it!

we've been having very warm weather for April, I'm watering two times a day, not that I mind. My first flower is blooming on my wave petunias. some did really well, others didn't sprout. it is time to move the tomatoes up a pot size, next stop to the garden the first week of May or to other homes, I have enough to share. March flew by, my Dad passed away after a long miserable fight with crippling arthritis, I miss him but am glad he's out of pain. I'll need to watch his gardens now. And finally, time to start all the melons, cukes and squash. They grow fast so they will be ready by the first of May. I just love spring.
Cathy
sorry to hear about the passing of you dad, but I'm with ya, I hate seeing my loved ones in pain and after long battles, that to me is the blessing behind their passing is no more pain... helps a little with the ache in the heart from not having them here.
I've been moving right along with my tomatoes and now up to 150 of them, which is a lot for my first year... still have many more to get started.... just wish I could find the time and strength to get the hoop house up..
Janet
hay guys just came in for a drink of water and thought i would glance at the post
cathy4 sorry to hear about your dad it is hard to watch some one suffer.
Imagesoart you cal keep the rain for now we have just the right amount right now
might ask for some a little later lol.
meadowyck grats on the maters i have 800 and still bought some from a friends greenhouse lol "i can't pass up a good plant
i couldn't wait, i planted up one of my strawberries tubes today "i know the ultimate day for planting strawberries is the 13th "tomorrow" but i couldn't wait. it only took 26 so i will plant the other 300 tomorrow when they should be planted.
whitebear
Ok whitebear... got to know... why is tomorrow, the 13th, the ultimate day to plant strawberries? I've had no luck with the strawberries on my property when I bought it, and after years of trying to get them to bear quality fruit, all I've gotten has been mushy, nearly flavorless berries. And they're sprawling and invading everything in close proximity. It's a patch of about 100+ plants and I started removing them last year. Hope to finish that job up this year, though I got a feeling it will take a third year to eventually comlete the job. My daughter loves strawberries, and we're spending a fortune on commercial brands. Going to start with a fresh batch this year in a small raised bed, and it sounds like tomorrow will be the day. So why April 13th?
(((Cathy))), sorry to hear of your loss. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I watched both of my parents suffer for a long time before passing. They were both ready when the time came and just went peacefully in their sleep. It's still hard to deal with sometimes, but their pain is gone.
Whitebear, do tell...what's the deal with strawberries on the 13th?
probably has something to do with the new moon being on the 14th?
hay rockgardner yep the 13 is the best for planting by the moon i always plant by the moon so did my dad and his dad and so on. i figure the moon controls the ocean tides it can pull a plant out of the ground faster and healthy/er
Whitebear, I went out and bought some strawberry plants today. Going to make sure they are planted today!
hay rockgardner how often do you fertilize those strawberries and do you know what type they are
Whitebear.. Not really to both questions but they seem to be an everbearing (more like overbearing!) variety. I didn't even discover this patch until my second year on the property. It was on the edge of my wooded area, covered with underbrush. When I finally exposed them they rebounded and flourished with lots of foliage and runners but the berries never tasted good. After about five years of fighting their desire to spread and the underbrush to return, I've given up. Would be worth it if I got good berries. It's also at the back my property, too far from the house. Always felt home grown strawberries should go in a raised bed anyway, figure they'll be more controllable that way. Will probably start with a large whiskey type half barrel this year and expand to a raised bed in coming years. Of course, any advice from you will be seriously considered.
hey guys sorry haven't posted been a planting fool
