Close up of the single flower:
What wildflowers are blooming now in your area?
I discovered this clump of Striped Coral Root (Corallorhiza striata) growing in our woods a couple of days ago -- I cannot believe I've lived in this house for 20 years and have never seen these before (although the mosquitoes can make visiting the cedar swamp a bit of a challenge this time of year) !
Queen Ann's Laces are blooming in our region.
Weed, those are beautiful... Think they'd take our heat and humidity?
Doug
Doug, PlantFiles shows their hardiness as being from zone 3a to 8b, but I'm not sure if they could be successfully grown "in captivity." I'm going to research a little more and see if they are sold anywhere -- I'd have to think they'd be expensive if they are! (We have Showy Lady Slippers on our property as well, which I've seen for sale in some catalog or other for something like $100 per plant; I guess I need to study up on how to make those things multiply!)
Shooting Star Nursery in Georgetown KY has several varieties of Lady Slippers at $15 if I remember correctly. They have a website but only ship that plant in Spring, usually May.

Wild Phlox is blooming now in our area. Others include Queen Ann's Laces, baby breath, trumphet vines ect....
Hey Doug. Hows that wild hydrangea I gave you doing. The other one I have is leafing out real nice, but I doubt that it will bloom this year. Did you get up and get those wild gingers yet? And you said there were wild hydrangeas there also. Any blooming?

There are alot of things blooming in the field around here, I'm just trying to find out their names and if they are good for my yard. I finally bought a book about native plants and ferns of KY and now will try to figure out what things are.
Frostykay..... The picture you posted is of a shrimp plant...not sure the variety.
The spotted coralroot (Corallorhiza maculata) is native to most of the US. Kentucky was listed.
When I made the trip to Ohio last week I stopped at a rest stop and found this area of wild flowers that was posted and they mow around it. I thought is was just so pretty and wish I could get some for my yard. No seeds were found, YET!
I found some wild flowers by Lake Cumberland that look a little like this only the flowers are smaller. I carefully brought a plant one home and it is doing well. When they finish fixing the dam and let the lake fill up to its normal level the area where I found this flower and everything else there will be under 20 - 30 feet of water. So I'm trying to save a few things.
Bluebonnets!
I think the yellows noted as coreopsis above in my post may be a Bidens like greenthumb's.
