Camera Corner (What Kind of Camera Do You Use, Vol.3)

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

Mrs_Ed, is there a classified ad section on DG?

I am 95% sure it will be for sell soon.

There is the "marketplace"

http://davesgarden.com/products/market/

And I guess there is this classified ads forum
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/bulletins/all/

But since a number of us here have Canons, maybe one of us on the Bird Watching forum would be interested. I'm sure it's out of my price range, but may not be for someone else.

Before I put it on eBay, I'll open a thread here to give it a try.

My 580 flash recommends that a lens of 300mm or larger be used with it. Before you get rid of the 400mm I would look up recommended flashes for that 200mm. Thought I would mention that.

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

Oh, didn't know that. I always reduce the power of the flash anyway. But, Burd, why would one need a flash for a powerful zoom lens, anyway?

I bought the flash for one reason Warbler's...I have a couple of examples here from last spring. I did not own a flash myself at that time but while I was there I used the light from other photographer's to make my picture's come out clearer. With the Warbler's etc. most are under a canopy of tree's so more light is needed to get nicer shots. Here are a couple of shot with which I stole..lol others light sources.

the last one is a Scarlet Tanager..this one is a Bay-breasted Warbler

here's the same Bay-breasted Warbler without me using the light from someones flash.

Edited to say...if you look at the exif data..you will notice that the shot with the light is only 1/3 of the shutter speed that the non-lit one is. But same settings.

What kind of light did you use? The EXIF data says the flash wasn't fired.

As I mentioned above "other photographer's" had external flashes on their cameras. I took photo's at the same time they did (of the same birds) and you see the results. I did not fire my own flash.

How are you guys looking at EXIF? I use KUSO exif viewer which works on most photographs on the web, but in DG, I get an error message that says, "Cannot find the temporary file, please reload the page." If I reload the page, I get the same error.

Patti, I use an EXIF plug-in (add-on) that is made for Firefox Mozilla. But if the pic has be extensively edited, it won't read it. Most of the time it works.

Burd, I'm looking forward to seeing you use that beamer.

Ah, thanks Hack. I still use Windows Internet Explorer. That's probably half the problem. My DH teases me all the time. He uses Mozilla Firefox too. I'll see if I can get to the DG EXIF on his computer... :O) And one of these days I will make the leap.

Appreciate the help.

here's a tidbit on EXIF

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exchangeable_image_file_format#Viewing_and_editing_Exif_data

I, myself, use Photoshop and/or Bridge.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Mrs. Ed, That was interesting info. I had no idea what EXIF stood for or all of the details behind how that info gets stored. I also use Photoshop and Bridge to view and process my photos. I use Bridge to add metadata too. I also use Downloader Pro to transfer photos to my computer and add some metadata with it too.

When I am looking at photos on the web at the photo sharing sites (PBASE or Flickr or Photobucket, etc.), I usually use KUSO EXIF viewer to see the EXIF info stored in the photo, but for some reason, KUSO doesn't work with Internet Explorer (my browser) on Daves Garden photos.

Well keep in mind that a lot of photographers want to remove EXIF data. Also, some older software will strip it out as well. So sometimes you just can't get to the data.

Oh, and if you are on Windows, this is supposed to be a good freeware viewer.

Thanks Mrs. Ed. I'll give it a try. And you are right about the data not being there sometimes. Even Photoshop will strip out EXIF if you use the Save for Web feature. That's why I never use that save feature since I like to keep the EXIF intact.

Hello Dellrose. I just wanted to inform you about the Canon Loyalty Program, just in case you are interested. It's a program where you trade in your old camera(broken camera) and they give you full value towards the purchase of one of the listed refurbished cameras...includes 7D, 5D MkII, 50Ds and others. It's a program that has been thriving for awhile, but is little known. Here's a link to one of the sites I visit that's full of info. I suggest you take a look at that program as it might be just the ticket for you. They take any 'ole broken camera.

I had to have the shutter replaced on my 40D but it is still not quite right. My extended warranty is good for another 15 months so I plan on sending it back to be reworked. I was thinking how much longer the film cameras used to last but then I realized that I take more pictures in a day than I used to take in a year!!

I would like to have the new Rebel or 7D but that will have to wait until I win the lottery. Then I will get a 500mm lens also!!

Clinton, MD(Zone 7a)

Don't sell that 400. The 70-200 with the 2x will take a big hit in image quality. The 400 alone is sharper than the 70-200 with 2x. Keep them both or sell to finance the 300 2.8 and use it with the 1.4 or 2x.

Quote from TheHackster :
...If the 70-200 proves itself, I'll probably sell the 400L. Don't intend to tote around both lenses.

Thanks Hack! Finally got things working together, had to mess around with it to get the 400mm to work. Now lookin for a teleconverter without spending my right arm for it, ya I know, good luck.
