Mrs Ed:
I presume the reference to lens number 3., immediately above, contains a typo. The labels, "thrifty fifty" and more commonly, "nifty fifty" are usually used in reference to the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II. Canon makes a 50mm f/1.2 and a 1.4, but to my knowledge has never made an f/1.3.

Camera Corner (What Kind of Camera Do You Use, Vol.3)
thanks Dave. I'll update it after syndicate1 clarifies.
Well, I just sold three of my Canon lenses (70-300mm, 28-135mm and 100mm Macro) on ebay - I wasn't using the 70-300 or 28-135 anyway. I couldn't believe it, they all went in under 4 hours - I used the "Buy it now" option. Got enough $$$ to buy that new Canon 100mm Macros IS USM lens flat out and have a good bit of change left over. Can't wait to get the new macro lens.

Cool!
Congrats!
It's top-of -the-line. You'll not be sorry you got it.

Awe-right, Santa comes early.
I sure enjoy mine, you'll like yours.
I looked at the Better Beamer, but haven't pulled the trigger, yet. Let us know what it does for you, Burd.

35x, whooooaaaa.
Hey Burd, Burn, Tiger and Rose, I see that you all are using a Rebel T1i camera. Your pix look really crisp on the other threads. As you all probably know, I have a 40d (my very first DSLR). Do you feel the 15.1 mp of the T!i is that much better than the 10.1 my 40d has. Have any of you used a 40d? I'm thinking about trading in my 40d's for a couple of T1i's. What are your thoughts - or anyone else's for that matter.
And, is the movie function worth having?

Hack the T1i...was my first DSLR...but before you run and get one check out this thread with the 40D.
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1144786/ if you could check out the previous threads within...that 40D you have is still a great camera.

Thanks Burd. I knew that Margaret uses a 40D. And her pix have always been real good. But, then again, your pix are super too.
I also wondering about shooting in "low-light" conditions. I wonder which one handles it best?
Hack, having more pixels is always nice when you need to crop. If I buy another camera however it will be a 7D....as far as low light...well that's why I bought the new flash to help me out.
This is my first DSLR too. Of course I would love the 7D, but the Mark series is a dream. But I'm not a professional and need a lot more knowledge, nderstanding and practice in Photography before I'd get something like that. I'm happy with the T1i for now. It's a great tool for learning. I think the quality of lens plays a role in it too.

Have you used your beamer yet?

Nope...it has not presented itself for use yet...but I am ready...lol
Can't believe it. It placed a bid on ebay for a T1i and won it for $420.00. Used, but in mint condition.
Now, I'll see how good it is compared to my 40D.

Good Deal Hack! You will like it! Get a fast memory card also...you will have to...to be able to get full HD-1080 for videos.
I gotta tell you, I've had a 7D for 6 months and I think it's a wonderful camera, but that doesn't make the images crisp on their own. It's the lens and the user too! And I've been struggling for sure. But the HD video is great. Be sure to turn the lens stabilization off for video or you hear clicking.
Yep, Burd I heard about the memory card issues. I've heard that one made by Transcend is good. I'll probably do video in 720. I read that it shoots 30 fps, good for our eyes.
Thanks for the tip Mrs_Ed. I'm thinking of using it mainly for macro work, I'll have the Canon 100mm IS Macro lens on it. But when it arrives, I'm going to put the Canon 400L prime on it and take some comparative pix between it and my 40D.

I had to have the shutter replaced on my 40D but it is still not quite right. My extended warranty is good for another 15 months so I plan on sending it back to be reworked. I was thinking how much longer the film cameras used to last but then I realized that I take more pictures in a day than I used to take in a year!!
I would like to have the new Rebel or 7D but that will have to wait until I win the lottery. Then I will get a 500mm lens also!!
Hi rose, sorry to hear of your 40D's problems. But, at least your extended warranty should pay for itself.
Both of my 40D's are good (knock on wood). Don't know how many clicks are on them though. You're right about the number of pix we take being MANY more on a digital camera than on a film camera. I have a simple little software program that, if you USB connect the 40D to the computer, will tell me how many clicks it has done, I just haven't connected them to the computer. Might do it when I finish on here.
I'm looking forward to getting my "new" T1i. I'm going to do some picture taking comparisons through the 40D and the T1i. If I don't like the t1i, I'll just put it back on ebay. But truthfully, I am so very impressed with the pix Burd takes with his, that I'll probably keep it, maybe for macro shooting. Course, I may slap on the 400 prime and retire my 40D for macro shooting.

I wasn't sure where to post this, but since most of you are serious at your bird photography, I thought this would be the right place. My favorite thing to photograph is birds, so I bought this CD book and I thought it was pretty awesome. I haven't used any of Alan's setups yet, but I am planning to try some out over the holidays if I actually do get some time off work...sigh.
Do any of you already have this and if so, have you tried any of his tips out?

Thanks P_Edens, I don;t have it, but it looks interesting. Maybe someone on here has it.
Hack
Oh I LOVE Alan Murphy and so does Margaret and a few others.
I'll check out the link.
I decided to ask for this Alan Murphy CD book as a late Christmas present.
Oh, I hope you like it. I am still reading and have picked up some tips that I hope to try out soon.
I love my wife.
She ordered me a Canon 70-200 F/2.8 L (non IS) lens. I'm going to use a Canon 2x teleconverter behind it.
I wasn't sure about whether or not it would still auto focus. I asked about my 400 f5.6 L prime lens, too. The non-IS is what I wanted. I don't have IS on the 400 prime and it has served me well. I'll use the savings from not buying the IS version to get the Canon 1.4x and 2x teleconverters.
Here's the reply to my query sent to Canon:
------
Dear Bobby,:
Thank you for your inquiry. We value you as a Canon customer and
appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
When using the EF 400 f5.6L USM lens with the new Extender 1.4 III the
auto focus is only available when using a 1D series camera and the
center auto focus point. When using the Extender 2x III no auto focus is
available.
When using the EF 70-200 f2.8L USM lens and either Extender III auto
focus is available.
I hope this information is helpful to you. Please let us know if we can
be of any further assistance with your EF 400mm f/5.6L USM and EF
70-200mm f/2.8 USM lenses.
Thank you for choosing Canon.
Sincerely,
Patrick

If the 70-200 proves itself, I'll probably sell the 400L. Don't intend to tote around both lenses.
Hack
Wow, Hack, that's wonderful. I've heard some really good things about the 70-200 f2.8. Do you intend to use a tripod or and-hold it? You shouldn't have any trouble selling the 400mm. It's a beautiful lens.
Well, Margaret, I always use a tripod, or a window mount, for the 400mm, So, I'll continue to use them with the new 70-200. And even when I don't use a mechanical mount, I always brace against something. That's why I not concerned that it will not be IS. I debated getting the 70-200 IS, but from what I read, with the way I always support the lens, the IS wouldn't do me any good.
I already have Tamron 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. I think they will allow auto focus with the f2.8 lens I know for a fact that the Canon TC's will allow AF. They worked on the 400mm f5.6, but with it being f5.6, they made me do manual focus.
And it may be that I end up selling both the new 70-200 non-IS lens and the 400mm lens and then getting the 70-200 IS anyway. Time will tell.
I'll be getting the 70-200 f2.8 non-IS in the first week of January.
Hack
Congrats indeed. We wives can be pretty cool too! Keep us in mind if you are going to sell that 400.
