SWEET Way to go Grey..

lost one more... the last two of the last 3 hatched I doubt will make it till midnight. I think the temp fluctuation caused the to hatch faster than they should have.. they act like they are "premature" gave them some of ZZ's special egg yolk drops... we'll see.

Another friend called & asked if they could pay me to hatch chicks for them. :) maybe i might make some money off chicks after all.

7 very strong babies at this point. :) i'll post pics in a bit.. gotta straighten up stuff first.

I know Hay.. that's what I was afraid of. I was worried you were taking them out too soon.. That always causes the last ones to hatch have problems. NO opening the bator for 24 hours! I hope they are okay.. but they don't need anything to eat for 24 hours.. if they are still weak tomorrow, then give them something.. but for now, the lid should stay closed and don't touch!!!

I am very happy you have a good hatch! I'm so looking forward to pics.

there was no option. They had to come out there was not enough space in the bator with all the sponges & cartons. They were getting trapped upside down & in water. They had to come out. Next time I won't use cartons. Its just to much hassle. 2 cartons & 8 sponges just leaves no space for chicks to get out of the eggs. I'll make something less bulky to use. last ones to hatch have hatched beautifully. Just got another chick out. Its alive & doing very very well. These ones were the ones trying to hatch when the temp dropped suddenly & it got so very dry in there. Still got 3 new pips to go. Also i made the choice to take them out rather than let them possible drown bc the three people i talked to here this weekend that have done hatches needing lots of sponges (which take up lots of space) to keep humidity up said they took them out & they did fine. It they didn't, they'd lose some anyways to drowning. Either way i'd have lost chicks. I seriously think these would have lived had the power not went out. besides I had to open the bator to add hot water to keep the humidity up to 75% min the entire time. does not make much difference it you open it to take out a chick or open it to add water. ur still opening it.

o.. the two i was worried about are doing better. not out of the woods but better.

I don't know how they can get in water to drown?

Oh well, you had a great hatch.. I'm happy you got babiez..

One thing I have noticed is that there is a big difference between what you can get by with, with a Brinsea/Suro type incubator vs a styrofoam one. The Brinsea types are able to return to the correct temp and RH almost immediately once you close the top, while the styrofoam ones are much finickier, zoom up and drop down and take a long time to recover.

I am still using styrofoam ones in addition to the Suro, but I think with the former incubation and hatching is much more of an art than a science.

it was nice to know that when they went to 111 i didn't fry them! i was under the impression you'd kill them at that temp & they were there for a good 3 or 4 minutes bc i'd walked downstairs to get a new cup of hot water incase the rh needed adjusted. I can't see anything scientific about this! its all art & finger crossing. the hovabator my friend loaned me.. it never faulters, never moves nothing. This one was great... except for trying to raise the humidity the last couple days. We got it to 99 once.. & it held for 3 hrs.. but the temp wanted to hover at 104 to 105 & i thought that was a bit warm.
