Is it spring anywhere?

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I'll second that 'good riddance'! What a deal on your lily blankies. :)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

ge - many daylilies look just like yours at this time of year. Dormant daylilies are still in hiding but if you don't like the look of the tips of the daylilies just snip them off with a scissors. It will not affect flowering at all.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Lili blankees sound wonderful. A lotbetter than what I do. I must have a hundred terra cotta pots, plus their lids, and I go running around the yard covering groups of lilies. Oh boy, what a pain. I should go find what Moby calls "lily blankies" - very cute!

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

I have pictures from last year and I must have posted some of them. If I have time, which I never seem to have enough of, I will post some of them.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Pirl, it's gorgeous! Thanks for a large photo to show it's beauty!

Donna, I'm starting to see tulips and a few other hardy things popping thru. Now I want to go out and look again! I've been out twice today!

Pirl, LOL over the jammies!

Ge, post another picture of the Galanthus when they're open all the way, or are they? I've heard of them but never saw them in bloom. I like them!

Newyorkrita, wow, that is a task and a half! Yep, I love daylilies too. How big is your property?

Wickerparker, I don't get in any hurry to uncover anything. I cleaned off beds once, in my early naive years, and it promptly froze and snowed. The beds looked good for a day :o) I've never heard of those blankets. I never cover anything. It has to survive on it's own.

It is a pretty normal sized suburban lot but it is muliple levels so I have lots of terraces. Almost no grass left here, everything has been turned into garden beds. Very cottage garden here.

I started a new post with some lily combo pictures from last year.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

These are about 3 inches tall.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Your combinations are beautiful

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

NYRita, I'll go find it.

Thanks Ge. I have a rock garden perfect for that size.

The mail came so I did go running around looking at the beds again. I do have crocus! I do!

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Crocus blooming means it's officially spring, at least in my mind. Mine are not blooming yet, no flower bluds even showing.

This fall I really want to make a big effort to add crocus all around all sorts of garden areas. They look so nice when they all bloom in the spring.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

We have a lot of kids selling candy for school. Last year I got crocus and hyacynths from a couple of them. Only a few to a package, but at least I got something new to look at this spring. I love hyacinths, but never plant any. Those I did have kept having the bloom chewed off before it opened. I gave up.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

ALERT
May not be anything but DG'er has seen a Red Lily Beetle.
It reminds me ,time to spray an early emerging larva spray around my lilies.
I usually spray when the lilies emerge ,about a month from now but if she sees them I am out there with my sprayer.
I use Sevin and Bayer Rose and Flower insct spray.
Sevin is a pain because it settles to the bottom of the sprayer so it has to be shaken from time to time.

Sometimes you just have to face facts. I probably wont plant tulips again.Narcissus are just as pretty and the deer dont like them

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Blood meal will help keep squirrels away from the crocuses. They don't bother the tulips. I use the awful green plastic coated "fencing" (just a cut section about 3' wide) to cover the tulip area and to protect the one azalea the deer have nibbled on all winter long. My hyacinths are planted in a protected spot using black mesh covering - the kind used for berry protection.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Ge, the beetle hasn't shown up in my area, yet. I fully expect to have them someday. I'm dreading that day. I'm hoping to see hyacinth blooms this year. I really really like them!

Pirl, for about 3 years I had lovely, common chicken wire around my Harry Lauder Walkingstick because the rabbits destroyed the first one. Grrr. Luckily, the squirrels don't bother my bulbs. I have a lot of walnut trees and the neighbor has a pin oak, so maybe they have enough natural food to eat.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

I've got martagons poking through.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Siiiighhhhh not here until April

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Crocus are blooming. I got a picture of on unopened and need to get the opened picture today.

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Crocus are blooming here too.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Iris reticulata is blooming here. I deliberately put them in to get March color. Chionodoxa are in major bud and should be next.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Open just today ~ hooray!

DonnaMack, are the iris the tiny ones with roots or a tuber? I have deep purple and red violer border iris. No ID, so I'm not sure what I have. Do you have any pictures of both flowers?

Moby, I've been seeing yellow crocus popping up on other threads, but your's are the deepest color and strongest growth yet! The yellows and oranges are the colors that are catching my eye this year. Last year it was coral.

My Blue Flags are just starting. They pop up all over and then I seem to dig where they were, and they don't multiply like I would like. This year I'm going to mark all of them. I'll have to add that to my "I Swear" thread!

Pittsburgh, PA

My Iris reticulata is blooming also. The forsythia buds are showing color. My bridal veil spirea is showing "white" in the buds.

We have had high 50's to 60's all week.

It looks like spring is almost here.

billyp ~ the tiny Iris reticulata have a bulb rather than a rhizome. What are Blue Flags?

Hi Billy Porter,

Went out and got some pics. This iris reticulata Purple Gem, a freebie from McClure and Zimmerman. Not a great pic, but you can see both it and the structure.

Wow everyone, great Iris and croci. It is almost spring where you are!!

Congrats Donna - you're getting close!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Oh no, Donna! Yours are much bigger than mine. I'm jealous.

Look what I have coming up! OT missiles

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

And I have deer poop. (No photos!)

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Love those OT missiles poising for takeoff!

No photos, pirl? Tsk tsk! I would photo my raccoon poop but it is just too disgusting. At least they don't seem to do any other damage.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Steve, are you sure those aren't artichokes?

Love all the spring blooms!

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

These may have opened day before yesterday. The first daffodil was opening. Also iris reticulata.

Jmorth - what lovely crocuses. And Steve, those do look like artichokes!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

What beautiful crocuses. They appear to have a white rim around them.

Nice to see those OT coming, Steve.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks everyone on the lilies. I am so excited when they start to arrive.

I agree on the beautiful crocuses.....I did not have good luck with mine this year. I am so jealous as I love the purple ones like 'Flower record". Some of the species came up but only a couple of the vernus. I know the vernus varieties require significant cold to bloom well which we got this year at least. And the hyacinths and daffs came out in full force and now peonies are budding up. I have even found tulips emerging that have been in the gound a few years with flowerbuds popping up. Wonder what I am doing wrong!!! :-( I have lots of leaves but few flowers on the crocuses.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Jmorth, those crocuses are exquisite. Which ones are they?

I've got snow on the ground and blankies on my martagons. Ah, Spring.

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Wickerparker, One of the Crocus vernus types, possibly 'Flower Record'. Here's 'Jeanne d'Arc':

Thanks jmorth. That's another lovely one. The photograph so well too.
