Looking for a nice collection of mixed orientals

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

hmmmmm
I might have to check this one out

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Here is a picture of the garden bed I plan to add the oriental lilies to. I only got as far as putting in the gardenbed last year and then I just planted annuals. There is a low stacked stone rock wall in back which separates it from the shrub area. I did manage to get afew daffoldil bulbs planted in there at the very back. I want to plant multiple rows of mixed oriental lilies using the dig a trench method that I have done before. Will put it near the back, in front of the daffs. Then plan to do the cosmos again in front of everything and just skip the marigolds which I had in there to fill up space last year.

Found a more inclusive view of that little annual gardenbed were I intend to add oriental lilies.

Beautiful, Rita! They look so nice with the zinnias. I'll have to try some zinnias in with mine.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

NYRita, Gorgeous!!! Your blooms are large and healthy!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Its going to be a beautiful spoy.
I cant wait to see my cosmose.I just love them ,so dancy and appealing.

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

I have looked and looked. I can find a collection of mixed spotted oriental lily bulbs anywhere. Any collections I do find include the solid colored ones. I just want the spotted ones, none with no spots for this project. So I am going to wait until the ones already there start to grow as they break ground very late each year. I can't really work there until I see some lilies popping up. Then I will dig the trench to expand the display that is there now to make it as I want it to be. Once that is done, I will see just how much ground I have to cover. Then I will order at least four different kinds, hopefully more like 6 kinds of different spotted oriental lilies from the bulk places like Sunshine or Woodenshoe. I will make my own mix. Its just that they sell in 25 lots so I don't know how many different ones will be in my mix. Depends on how big a trench I dig.

Also, I have to have the trench dug before the bulbs come as they are the really precooled ones you have to plant right away. I remember I bought some from lily bulbs from WoodenShoe early last summer and the bulbs even after shipping, were still semi frozen.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

It's a lot of work to get what you want and expensive to pick single packages! My problem is finding a place for a trench, LOL! I't going to be a beautiful outcome and I can't wait to see it blooming!

Happy Easter All!

Did you decide against the ones from Van B, Rita, or didn't they have the spotted collection this year?

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

I couldn't find a spotted collection this year at VB. I have plans for that slope in the front yard to add trumpet lilies in back of the orientals but I really can't do that yet. I have to expand the oriental lily section. That is make it longer. So I decided to focus on what needs to be done there instead of currently worrying about the next lily row I would like to have.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

is this the one you're looking for?

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Those are beautiful!!!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I was thinking that was the collection Rita got already, and was looking for more of.

Van B is not the best company, but sometimes their bulbs turn out to be nice.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Pollyk, they were a nice mix. I have a few speckled, but I see why she wants more. They really caught my eye!

I stuck with my promise not to buy anything this year till I rework what I have. It's so tempting to say just one order, but I'm holding firm :o) I'll enjoy everyone else's and get some wonderful ideas!

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

I like the speckled oriental lilies best. But for that front yard section, I want it to go with what is already there, and already there are the spotted speckled oriental lilies.

Funny, I used to buy all my bulbs there at VB Wholsale but now I have learned of so many other places because of the Lily Forum here.

I measured yesterday and I need about 7 feet in extra trench. That would be 4 rows deep of 7 feet. I can't buy them at $15.00 for 4 bulbs. The cost would break the bank. And I can't find this mix at the wholesale VB site. Now that retail is good if one only needs afew bulbs and I personally think its a very nice mix. So Polly, your intentions are great and I do thank you for trying to help LOL!!!!!

I do have less confidence in VB this year than I used to. Last year I bought so many of these really fancy and very expensive hybrid lilies that were supposed to be all color mixes. There were no solid white color in the mix at ALL. When those lilies bloomed they were ALL a solid white color lily. And they cost a fortune. So last fall I dug up all those white lilies, moved and kept afew and gave the others afew bulbs here and there to friends. The white ones are lovely in small groupings. Now I have to replant that lily section I had already done last year. I don't have more money to spend on that project right now as I am buying bulbs for other lily projects currently.

So I think I will put some annuals there for this summer and buy a mix from VanEngelen's this fall and plant that for the redo. I have already found a mix that will be perfect for the backyard. Meantime I have to fix the front yard this year as I am focused on getting that front yard slope done.

After I get that trench done, then I will either get trumpets for another row in back of it this spring or wait till next spring. But that will finish that front slope for summer bloom.. And it does look really good. Roses, daylilies, lilies and zinnias all there for a very cottage garden look. I just need to add spring bulbs for the early color. Of course, the spring bulbs will be another major project.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

NYRita, annuals was going to be my suggestion. Sigh, it sounds gorgeous!

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

It really is all starting to come together. I want a succession of bloom. So If I start with spring bulbs, then siberian and bearded iris, asiatic lilies, daylilies and oriental lilies plus annuals and other things, I have lots of summer color. Plus I have all those roses (about 230).

I was just looking at the upstairs back section that had some lilies last year. I am moving 2-3 daylilies into the very end were some are already, then I will put snapdragons and those Glamini Gladiolas there for this summer. So at least no empty spot.

I am big on adding annuals to be fillers whenever I need them.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I have almost everything you have, but on a much smaller scale. Not many roses tho. They take too much winter protection. The Buck roses are proving to be pretty hardy and someday I'll add more. I can't call it a rose bed if I have no roses in it :o)

I'm so waiting for the iris to bloom! I divided all of them two years ago and am anxious for the little ones to get big enough to put out color!

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Bearded Iris are new for me. Only started with them last summer. They all came thru the winter fabulously and have great increase. Now to hope they all bloom.

As for the roses, I got the rose crazies before my other plant crazies and just can not immaging my garden without them. I have all types of roses too, like diversity even there.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

We have the iris borers really bad. I have to put systemic on them early and have lost a couple before I realized what was happening. I've discovered the intermediates thanks to some freebies from a neighbor. They bloom earlier too.

Very pretty. I don't think I have Iris borer. If I do, I will be dousing the iris with something.

I am really, really surprised at the amount of increase I am getting. I don't know what I will do with all these extras in two years or so. I got my iris mostly from Schreiners. I want to get more from them this year. I also got many of the TB from Zebra Gardens. Those are just so very wild and different looking.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

My neighbor got those from Schreiners. A lot of mine are too and some were given to me with no name :o( Iris are very addicting! I just wish they bloomed longer.

It's fun to hear where people get their flowers. We have so much of the same thing all the time. Then I'll look at other flowers in a different state and think, no one around here has those.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Iris Borer has been a real menance for me for the past four or five years. This year I actually got the Bayer grub control out on the iris beds before the little buggers started to hatch. We'll see how things go this year.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

Ticker, I thought of you this spring as soon as I saw the red peonie buds, LOL!

I actually got mine on in March instead of April and I still saw signs of water streaking in a couple of leaves. I hope the rain makes the Bayer soak into the ground so it can get into the plant! So far, the others look good. My fingers are crossed too!

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Yeah, I had mine on in the middle of March too. Then we got snow, and that helped it melt down into the dirt. :) Yay!!

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

The thing is that I like a lot of color. When all these misabeled lilies from VB Wholesale bloomed white, I just didn't like it. Af few white are on in my book, an entire bed of white lilies don't work for me.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

I bet it really lit the night up, though...

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Don't know, I never look at my garden at night. They are beautiful lilies though and very fragrant with really large flowers.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

You really should. Night gardens can be quite beautiful.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

NYRita, color is what you have! I agree. Something big like a lily only needs a few white, where a bed of white tulips look nice. I wasn't a fan of white a few years ago, but all of a sudden, I like all colors... and non colors, LOL!

Ticker, another thing on my list that I never did yet. Maybe because I don't have many white flowers :o)

I do have Casa Blanca lily and boy, is it big and in my face. I started with three bulbs and they are all making a nice bunch that needs spread out a little. I love walking up to it and sniffing! They all need dug and replanted in better dirt. I do have buckets of that mixed in the garage, so I'm one step ahead of myself.

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

That is why I dug them out. I actually have four clumps in four different spots around the garden of those white lilies. That should look good. But an entire bed of them in white? No way, too boring.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I'll bet they look good in the separated clumps tho. I bought the deep red Sumatra a couple of years ago and mudded them in. I need to move them too. The trumpet lilies are in a tub I buried in the garden last year. Yeah, cart before the horse. I couldn't resist them tho.

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

I just spent a bloody furtune on my lily order this spring from The Lily Garden. All those lilies are spoken for, that is have their spots picked out in the garden before ordering. That way I knew exactly how many to get. In fact I have another thread on the forum here with my order listed.

But none are for that garden area that used to have the white lilies and now has nothing. I need more of a mass effect in mixed colors for there, at least 50 bulbs would be minium, would like to put more than that. I had about 100 in there before. And no lilies ordered for a section in my front yard that opened up for gardening space when my big Blu Spruce fell down in a storm this spring.

So it will just have to wait. It just gets impossible to get everything done. Something always gets put off for next year. In spite of lots of progress each year, the end is never in sight.

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I thought I'd be way behind! It's been so hectic here.

You know we will absoutely love your beds and so will your neighborhood. All that scent has to be wafting around :o)

You would think the companies could give a discount for the amount of bulbs you order. I hear you on things never getting done. I've skipped from job to job, getting a little done, then I go back and repeat. Eventually it starts looking nice.

Well, a busy day ahead and I have to get going!!

Clarksville, MD

This is Asiatic Lily Monte Negro.
Just came into bloom yesterday.
It is a must have for my garden.
But then so are many others :)
