Going on year 8, and received a Dmail from user name "DavesGarden", notifying me of my renewal. Wanting to check out the profile of the new name, I received this:

System Member

This username is reserved by the Dave's Garden system, and cannot be interacted with.

Sad! IB, please leave the faceless, nameless, if they don't really exist.

For Plant Scout, I do still receive notices of my click throughs from "Dave", and I just flash back to old Cheech and Chong movies thinking, "Dave? Dave's not hear man!"

I guess we're not in Kansas anymore, Toto.

Chris, if it helps, I think the (non-interactive) DavesGarden name has been in place with for quite a while.

Within the helpdesk, we can obviously interact with people who write in, but the system also generates messages, such as the renewal reminders, and that's how the system sends them out. If you respond to the reminder itself, then your question or comment routes to the helpdesk.

In a similar vein, I've also noticed the 'faceless/nameless' admin user a time or 2. This week when I saw 'admin' when visiting the polling booth thread, I again had that cold, 'Dave doesn't live here anymore' feeling. I know, because I've read it elsewhere, that the admin account has existed for some time, but only recently have we been 'greeted' by it with such frequency.

Personally, I think it would feel less cold if a generic admin account were created and given some arbitrary name. I think I would rather interact with 'Bob' or 'Karen' or some other non-existant 'person' as apposed to 'admin'. Especially in view of all of the recent changes, I think seeing 'Bob' (or Ted or Alice) on the polling booth question, for instance, would make me less inclined to mourn the loss of human contact to which we've become so accustomed here.

Even as I type that last sentence, BTW, I am acutely aware of the dichotomy in what I'm saying as we are, after all, talking to Terry right now, aren't we? So, clearly, we haven't lost all human contact, but I still vote for giving Mr or Ms 'admin' a name even if a fictitious one.
