My Morning Glory Adventures March2010

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, looking forward to all your blooms this summer. Can't get here
soon enough for me.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - WOW! You got a jungle in the basement! LOL! I expect Tarzan to come swinging through with Cheeta! LOL! Me Tarzan, you, Jane! ;-)

Do your plants bloom indoors as much as outdoors? Or do you not fertilize them until they go outdoors? Just curious...

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Tonight I came home to this bloom on the same vine as the last one, but a totally different coloration.. Now these seeds came off MY grow outs last year. I have no clue why these are like this, maybe the inside environment? I started these seeds all at the same time, there is a setosa in there and a few other things, I am so confused over this one..
Becky, right now the flowers blooming downstairs are my geraniums, lantanas, begonias, jasmine, pentas, coleus, shrimp plants, and impatiens. I have some hibs budded again. the brugs and other tropicals are trimmed back so they won't bloom until they are back outside. the mg seedlings that are vining are producing buds, and I keep missing them as they bloom.. work bah!
something is pollinating them.. I keep getting seeds.. even the lantanas are seeding. Dh can't wait until the plant cups in the windows are all outside.

Very pretty Debra

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

gosh Jackie, it looks like a mutation or something, but thanks..

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

I like mutation's. lol

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - That almost looks like a mutation of Blue Silk only it is lavender color, right? I would like to create something like that with white and a dark border. A reverse color bloom. I think it would be stunning! Did all your blooms look like that? Or just that one bloom?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Becky, here is the first bloom on this vine, : http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7629368
the one I posted above is the second, we will see what the third one looks like, I have moved it to yet a different location..

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - It will be interesting to see what the future blooms look like on your vine.

Here is a photo of Sarah's Blue Silk which is why I think that this is what yours might be or perhaps a cross of Blue Silk?

..here's a shot of the bare wall where my vines haven;t filled in yet (of course to the left and right, YES, but I am NOT moving these pots a fourth time! These are my MG babies out getting theor sun for the day~some come in at night, some are 'toughened up' and ok but tomorrow I think i will leave them all out but get them more Sun (moving them to the EAST side) so the dirt will be more thoroughly warmed for the night. I am soaking more moonvines and Purple Flake now too...I have the best luck sprouting, in a sandwch bag~ STILL with a paper towel in it wet, under or over a source of warmth. This still works bests for me. OHYEAH and I got my taxes DONE LOL ...btw... HAPPY SPRING ONE AND ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS : does anyone have experience with Peavine? I wondered why there is such diversity in the seeds shape and size; will only the laarger healthier looking ones bloom? I will post results on my soak if nobiody has any suggestions. ...sorry photo is so blurred ...but the wierd discrepancy is still obvious...
thanks again all~

my gosh, raeding about staarting that just now is insane?>!!!!!! Is it native there? I was reading 'bout starting it, and it sounded more like work than moonvines (My moonvine seeds sprouted right up this year, strangest thing EVER!!!!!!) wish i had a shot of them~24 hrs in a wet paper towel and BANG ...nature is SO funky :)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, Eager to see the Operculina bloom. I killed my vine yr before last.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Good to see you Darren, we miss your posts.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I can't believe I am still up.. I am freezing my tai=tais off. I have a couple of other buds about to.. I am glad I have the garden downstairs to keep me busy...Jackie if you want a couple of seeds let me know.

I found the seeds to that cute dayflower up there,, infact, I found a whole lot of seeds.. funny, when they are boxed up and garaged or in the car trunk, I forget about them.
Darren, this birdsfoot trefoil is a native wild flower here, I grow it in my planters, it has like a clover leaved vine and these cute little flowers that look like sweet peas..

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

It got up to 61 today, and then dropped 20 degress with jowling wind and blowing rain that turned into snow.. last year, march 28th 4 inches..
last year March 31st 70 degrees.. Then in April the week of the 12th, freezing rain and cold temps.. Oh dear, then come the tornadoes..
what fun... Maybe I should keep everything in downstairs..

Darren - Love your pink freesias! I don't know if mine will come back this year. I had them in pots and other plants may have squeezed them out. :-( My Rain Lilies are starting to bloom. Yes! We just had some heavy rain earlier this week! Those are tough little bulbs! My trailing lavender lantana is blooming like crazy now. They always bloom before they get new leaves!

I'll have to try the sandwich bag germinating trick! :-)

Debra - All you flowers look great! I bet the plants can't wait to get back outside in the sunlight. Hopefully, all this cold weather will leave and Spring will arrive permanently there with not cold weather showing up unexpectedly! Are you located in Tornado Alley?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, thanks, I've still got a few sds left I can try again.
We have your type weather on the way. Dropping temps after
the rain moves in tonight changing over to snow later.
Temps going down from 70 or so to a high of 40 tomorrow,
By Tues and Wed, the highs will be back in the high 60's.
I hope this is our last cold weather event till next winter.
Sick of it already.

Joeswife(Debra) - I posted this elsewhere, but you seem like the one to ask about Morning Glories -
I'm thinking about planting some along my side fence (full sun area). What do you think is the best
variety, esp. for attracting birds & butterflies (esp hummers)? The fence is only 4ft high.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Most of the morning glorys I have in full sun on my North fence have been I. purpureas, but last year I planted some i. nils along with two species glorys, messina creeper and setosa.. butterflys liked the purps and species plants the most, but the cypress vine and lobata got alot of action from the bees and hummers. Try mixing a few on that side fence with some Monardas or Lobelia Cardinalis or liatris, with zinnias and salvias in front along the bottom, you will get lots of bees, butterflys and hummers . I love morning glorys because they provide an instant privacy wall, each bloom is a delight, and I can grow what I want in front of them, or at their feet. ( I have a trendency to over seed for a full flower look)
Becky or Jackie might have another suggestion for a specific mg for you to grow.. If you need any seeds, let me know.
I feel honoured that you asked me ;)

hard to see here, is Blackie, I have him tied up to a tall stick, and we also have been fighting aphids, but this one is so very tuff.. I know he can't wait to get outside... he is down to the left of the lowest shortest brugmansia there..
