Another true sign of spring...
Signs of Spring
Oh, is THAT the tree, Kim? Well thanks for posting it, because I couldn't imagine! Isn't she adorable.
Nice ones guys!
Kim she looks adorable in the tree!
Yes, that is the tree. I agree with both of you, she is adorable! She has 20+ days to go.
20 + days 'til the chicks hatch Kim? Oh how exciting that's!
OMYGOSH...you lucky duck!! lol
Hard to think of this being a sign of spring since we're having this blast of winter weather…
For the past week or so, the junco numbers have increased as they migrate back north. But today, with the wintery mix, there are about 20 here. That's a big number for me!
Same here, the weather took a turn back to winter. Brings more birds to the feeder though. Last night we had 3 pileated woodpeckers in and around the feeders. I tried to get a picture of all three at once, but they were not cooperating. They were just pecking around, not fighting or anything.
We'll be getting your wintery mix later today mrs. ed! In the early a.m. last week I heard cardinals, crows, and I think house finches. I haven't seen hide nor hair of goldfinches yet. I'm putting up 3 bluebird nesting boxes in my new backyard next week. Yippee!
I had 1 Goldfinch here today. We are getting rain the next 2 days.
Friday and Saturday were beautifully spring-like here, then it rains and temp. drops again like winter today. While outside working in the garden. I noticed a Carolina Chickadee exiting from this bird house. I'm so happy the little one has chosen the site. This will be my FIRST Chikadee's nest. Spring, how sweet spring time really is.
Marna, that birdhouse was especially made for the Chickadee, it camouflages well. I love, love it. Duc ahhh, that is stunning of your bullock's Oriole. The bright yellow, its black feather and the dark pink blossoms of the peach -blossom is a fine contrast! It's Peach blossoms isn't?
We have our first chickadees (3) ever. I've heard them in the trees in past years but never seen them at the feeder before. The bright yellow color of goldfinches is changing daily and their sweet songs are a spring tonic. Saw two Meadow Larks, but haven't heard them sing. The first cow bird was on the feeder and a house sparrow (oh no) was sitting on the blue bird house. There are also very aggressive purple martins competing for the bluebird houses as well. I hope they don't scare off our lovely bluebird pairs. We will need to monitor the houses daily.
I've never seen a Bullock's Oriole before. What a gorgeous bird.
Pam I agreed, it's so much fun to see the tranformation on the Goldfinches. Hope the Blue Birds won't be scared away. I'm trying to attract them to our yard also. Need to learn ways to deter/discourage Houses sparrows. I don't know much about their culture.
Duc, beautiful picture of a beautiful bird.
I will look forward to any input on discouraging house sparrows from my bluebird/tree swallow house. (No bluebirds for the three years it has been up, but then bb's are not common at my EWA house.
Am happy for all of your chickadees. We have so many trees around they don't seem to need houses here.
Love all the springy looking shots...still waiting for something to bloom besides the daffy's!!
A sure sign of spring is 5 Bluebird eggs in the nestbox!! Yippee....I think!!
Nanny...I must go by Tractor Supply and see what I am missing, forgot to stop today. Our store has been selling Boss for $10.99 for 50 pounds. The cheapest I've gotten it for a very long time!
PNW...have you tried using the monofilament on your boxes as described here http://www.sialis.org/hosp.htm . Scroll down the page to monofilament and you can see what I use on mine to discourage the House Sparrows. It worked on 2 out of 3 boxes.
Yay Rose!
Hey, I noticed that BOSS was really cheap this year too. Last year it was about 21.99 for 50 pounds and this year it's 12.99!
I have noticed that too. We have even see BOSS for 9.99 on sale. We stock up. We will go through a bag in a week.
A lady I work with has seen bluebirds. She lives in town. I do not see them where I live.
I remember my first winter of feeding birds (2007) the price got up to $25.00 a bag...that was the year of terrible weather and no winter seeds for the birds due to late spring freeze. Would you believe I was feeding a whole bag a day...I was scared someone would haul me off to the looney bin for spending so much $$$!
Anyway...things have improved since then!
Here is another sign of spring....
Just love watching the goldfinches color changes. :-)
Ooooo....I remember that Rose!! LOL
I couldn't figure out how in the world you could afford that!
She had to sell a few cows, I'm sure!
Three purple finches showed up today. it MUST be spring.
oooh, I haven't seen them yet. I have seen the goldfinch changing colors already though.
