I know that the tendency was towards the creation of cultivars with flowers that remain open longer and still beautiful longer but I never imagined that the series Youjiro was the starting point.
youjiro pink flowered much and it is true that the flowers are always beautiful at noon.
The series Youjiro is a serie that dates from 1975 created by Mr.Yoshiaki Yoneda - interspecific cross with Ipomoea Purpurea.
After 100 hand pollinations only 2 or 3 have been fruitful.
All other cultivars with a cross have another source: the Mount Fuji serie, which is a very old group of cultivars - with all Fuji no .... Beni, Murasaki, Ao,Sora etc.....
Here Fuji no Momo is totaly different - large flower with a "normal" foliage.
Since the arrival of Ipomoea in Japan and for 1,000 years there was only simple type MG .
Fans had only two wishes: to get other colors and other sizes.
Like today they wanted bright colors and large flowers.
Size:
Initially the flowers had the trumpet-shaped corolla and consisted of 5 petaloid welded.
Something like that :
Even today some cultivars still have the old type.
We forgive them if they bloom like crazy. LOL
With the advent of gene DG-1, gi and RE-1, "Yo" (corolla) as the Japanese call , begin to increase the size. The corolla has now 6, 7, 8 and 9 petaloid.
What gave the flowers larger and especially with a different architecture - they became voluptuous..... impressive.
There are a lot of cultivars with large flower and only 5 petaloids.
And there are many small flowers with 5 petaloid (here it is easy to count) who have many Cham.
The rule is that there are no rules.

I will grow this beauty in 2010.
Over 80% of MG single flower this 5 or 6 petaloid.
Here Blue Drizzling with 3.5 petals Blue and 1.5 white petal .LOL
Sometimes the same plant produces flowers with 5 to 6 or 7 petaloid.
This is the case of Fuji.
Here Fuji no Murasaki .
Sometime very hard to count.
Here is Dragon Shiun with 7 petaloid and medium size bloom.
Narumi Lagoon (Q 0159) with 7 petaloid.
p.s.: presence of gene pt (small flag) and gene pr the blue line.
The only major MG with 8 petaloid I have grown is that one (NOID)
This photo is a nice summary, this shows that just by the size of the MG world is very diverse.
What kind of flowers you will grow in the future - the left or the right?
ps: if someone has a picture of a flower with petaloid 9 is the time to post here, I have never seen!

But there existed a few decades ago a Nil cultivar ( that has disappeared )who has really yellow flowers .
The yellow Nil at the moment is the cultivar "Full Moon".
