MG in the Southern Hemisphere...

Pretoria, South Africa

Hi all, here are a few photos as promised. Our growing season is much cooler this year, with lots of rain. I am not complaining, even though all my flowers are taking way longer to get into bloom.
I prefer waiting to waking up exhausted due to the heat...

The purpureas were the first to flower. I grew this flaked MG last year, and some of the seeds I harvested gave rise to these unusually colored flowers...

A comparison...

This plant's flowers hardly had any stripes...

Now the nils. I started three seeds labeled "Dainagon". These are the results. Some of the pink flowers has only a hint of white on the edge. One has to look closely to see it.

The second plant...

and then the third plant. All of the flowers has this hint of fuchsia on the leaves. At first I thought it was the weather as the first flower opened after some rain.

These seeds were marked "Lavender Mixed".

Not lavender, but I Iike the pattern on the flower.

And then this nameless beauty.

I hope to be adding some more shortly.

They are all beautiful but I really like the lavender mix.

Denin Bleu Purpurea , very....very interesting !

Truly awesome flowers and photos, Elsa!

Did the vine that made that elegant blue ray flower continue to make other similar flowers, or was the one you showed an isolated one?

Elsa - I LOVE your blue background Purple Flaked I. purpurea! Please save me a couple of seeds! :-) Very unusual! :-)

Is #7 and #8 blooms from the same plant just taken at a different time of the day? Truly beautiful vine and blooms on that one! (Another I would love seeds from! )

And your nameless beauty (last bloom photo) is another really lovely bloom ... as is ALL of them! So happy to see that you finally got blooms! Looks like the wait was well worth it for such stunning flowers! :-)

Dany - That is a very good description of what it looked like. I hope to get similar flowers from the seeds. Holding thumbs as all my flowers are OP.

Joseph - the plant has had two flowers so far - both of them with the ray. I'm keeping my eye on that one...

Becky - Will save you some seeds, and yes, both photos are from the same plant. No.6 was taken early in the morning after we had some rain the previous night, and no.7 was taken later in the day. (Higher temperatures)

Thanks, Elsa! I look forward to more photos as your vines continue to bloom! :-)

Question ... the last photo ...

What is the size of the bloom? Is it large or medium or smaller? And are the leaves solid color or variegated? The bloom to me looks medium size with solid green leaves, but it is hard to tell from photos. :-)

Pretoria, South Africa

Thanks for your kind words, stetchworth.

Becky - the last one is a medium sized flower, with variegated leaves. Will put some seeds aside for you.

(Zone 7a)

Elsa, thank you for sharing those flowers with us flower-starved Northerners. Those colors and patterns on your first one flow together as if the flower itself were raining - most enjoyable - love them all.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Elsa - Variegated leaves??? Oooooh ... NICE!!!! Love it! :-)

Karen - "flower itself were raining " ... hmmmm ... that's a pretty close description of that bloom. :-)

Pretoria, South Africa

Becky, I have to correct myself - the variegated leaves are on another plant that hasn't produced any flowers yet. The one you asked about actually has plain leaves, but they are overshadowed by the much more vigorous growth of the variegated plant.
Sorry about that... variegated leaves would have been a bonus.

Karen, I had to take another look at the flower just to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me. I'm glad it produced a "normal" one just behind it. It makes it easier to pick up on the different colors.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

LOL! Not a problem, Elsa. I really thought it had solid green leaves and was surprised when you said variegated. LOL! And the reason I asked those questions is that I grew some LYK seeds this year and got a bloom that looks a little like the bloom on your vine. I will be curious to find out how abundant your vine produces seeds. My LYK was very stingy producing seeds.

WOW!!! She is a beauty!

Thanks, LiliMerci. I hope to get some more of these flowers. I have quite a few seedlings (after destroying the mother plant) I am holding thumbs...

This plant produces several flowers Denin Blue?
If it is a single plant, other seeds are also capable of producing the same type of flower. All seeds are valuable.

Yes, Dany. I'm hoping for some more of the same flowers from the seed that germinated. This time I'll mark them carefully, and be sure to keep them separate.

Here are a few more flowers. A blue NOID

This one was labeled "Chocolate Silk". Please correct me if it is not the case. Can't really tell what the difference is between "Chocolate Silk" and "Solid Chocolate".

I don't have an idea who the parents of this plant is. This is the first flower. Look at the almost heart shaped colorization on the petals...I hope it stays like this.

The previous flower reminds me a bit of this one http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7490893. The vines are a good 12 feet apart, with the previous plant originating from seeds that dropped from last year's grow out (Can't remember what I had growing...) and the one I mentioned in this past is from seed I received in a trade. Wonder if it has anything to do with the weather? Who knows...

very nice Elsa.

Elsa love the star in the flower. Could be a variation of Blue Star of India
I think Chocolate Silk has a white border, my Solid Choc doesn't.
