Tropical garden #63

Red Oak, TX

Everyone is welcome!

This is Aechmea Blanchetiana, a new plant through E-Bay. I saw it in one of Dutchladys pictures and had to have one.

Great, Rita! Make sure that A. blanchetiana gets as much sun as possible, the color will improve.

I got the same ti plant, and it broke, so that is the first cordyline cane I stuck, lol. I saw your Mojito from the last thread. I was supposed to get C. Mojito with the ti, but it wasn't included. Hopefully it will be sent.

I love the Aechmea picture, the golden star, the deeper reds, the lurking aroids and the rubber tree saying hi. Nice arrangement :).

(Zone 1)

Prita: Love that Cordyline, what beautiful colors! Aechmea blanchettiana is one of my favorites! My sister and brother in law have some huge ones in the front of their house, two on each side of the house. I'm not sure if they are still there though, I keep forgetting to ask her about them. We haven't been down to visit them since last spring and when they came here this past summer they said they were going to dig them up and throw them away!! Arrrgh! Can you believe that?! They do it all the time ... plant something, leave it for a few years and then get tired of it and throw it away to plant something else! I keep telling them they are throwing out plants that some folks would really, really love to have! They did give a very large Palm tree to a neighbor a few years ago when they were changing out some landscaping and having a circular driveway put in, but most of the time they just dig up plants and put them in trash bags and out to the curb with the garbage! I told my BIL that I wanted at least one of those Aechmea's when they did decided to dig them up but I have a feeling they are long gone! I took this picture Christmas 2008 and they still looked like this when we were there in March last year. I wish they had decided to get rid of them when we were visiting last spring, I would have put one in the back of my husbands truck and brought it home. They won't survive in ground during our winters so it would have to go in a container.

Thumbnail by plantladylin

I think it's very sad they would not consider donating them. I don't ever throw a plant away without offering it to someone or putting it on freecycle. Sometimes I even have a hard time throwing out cuttings!
A big A. blanchetiana like that can sell for over $ 50.

At the same time, I have benefited from people throwing out plants in the past. This is an orchid blooming in my yard about three months after I picked it up from the green trash pile in front of a nearby house.

That was a pretty picture of Hilo Dave. I wanted to ask you about 3 plants we came across as we climbed down the steps to the Thurston Lava tube. They seemed out of place to me. This first on looks like some type of fuschia.

This one looks like a strawberry.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

...and I had no idea what this one was but it too looked out of place. Are these natives?

Thumbnail by ardesia

Rita, thank's for the new thread and that is a nice C. Mojito you have and Mekos I hope your G.D. recover's quickly from the attack. I am very sorry I missed reading that.

3jsmom, that plant is a juvenile Alocasia portei but you have a good eye for an Alocasia plant;-)) Your "arrowhead" plant should perk right up for you soon being they are tough plant's and can with stand quite abit of abuse.

Dutchlady, a perfect example of "One man's trash is another man's treasure". Even applies to women. ;O)

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

Rita where did you find that ti plant; she's a beauty.

I'd post a picture of my gardens if I had anything pretty to post but after the last freeze everything is brown so I'll just post the latest picture of my baby.

Hi Ardesia, your plants from Thurston Lava Tube are non-natives and are as follows:

1st is Fuchsia paniculata of Central America. It used to be a common weed in the National Park and in forests around Kulani. In recent years it has declined; I'm not sure why.

2nd is Fragaria vesca, the European Strawberry.

3rd is Anemone hupehensis, Japanese Anemone.

Glad you enjoyed your trip to Hawai'i Island!

Aloha, Dave

Does anyone have any plant from giancarlo that I can get a cutting from? I'll pay postage or trade something, and it doesn't matter which plant but preferably an aroid. Thank you.

Thanks Dave, they did not appear to be natives and seemed so out of place along that walk. Birds must have dropped the seeds.

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

My dear late friend Armando (a.k.a. Giancarlo on DG) gave me a philodendron domesticus a few years ago. I have taken great care of it. It is growing by me on the patio as I write these lines. I would gladly honour his memory by sending you a cutting. How is the weather where you live? Will it freeze on its way there? That would be a shame.

Sylvain.

zone 6a, KY

I not sure about the weather. It isn't so bad the last few days, but I agree it would be a shame to lose the cutting. I would rather wait a month or 2. I know that every time I want to learn about a plant, I find beautiful pictures by giancarlo. I kind of thought, wow, he lives in a beautiful place. When I found out he had passed away, it broke my heart. I can't imagine how it was for those who knew him :). And thank you, I would regard it highly even if it were a dandelion, lol. I have a sweet potato given to me by a dear friend that passed, and I grow it instead of eat it, lol.

Does anyone else grow plants as an honor to someone?

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Please keep my nickname on file for when you can safely request a cutting through the mail. You can send me a D-mail then. I'll be happy to oblige. It is not unusual for people to have memory gardens, although I only have a plant he gave me.

Armando lived in Miami where he kept a wonderful garden full of gorgeous plants, mostly aroids. He kept detailed records of each specimen with color photographs and cultivation data. In the end, he had taken to selling specimens, mostly cuttings, through e-Bay. He was a most generous gardener. We miss him dearly and rejoyce in the fact that we got to know him.

Take care.
Sylvain

Amen, Sylvain. My heart aches every time is see one of his pictures posted.

Thank you. I like the sound of memory garden. I also appreciate you sharing a little more about Armando. He grew beautiful plants, that is for sure :). Some I wouldn't have learned about without his efforts. Sigh. I wish I had joined DG sooner.

Red Oak, TX

Dutchlady, thanks, I will find a sunny spot for my new Bromeliad. I am hoping for an early spring!!

3jsmom31, I hope that you get your Mojito soon. Philodendrons are my favorite plants and I am glad that you love them as well. My two favorite sites to buy from are Novelty Greens in Hawaii and Natural Selections Exotics in Florida. Unfortunately, they are not offering anything right now. They will send you nice big healthy plants.
I do have Giancarlo in my favorites. and refer to him often.

plantladylin, I love your sister's style in landscapeing. This is the first time seeing blooms on the Blanchetiana, that is a added bonus to this beautiful bromeliad.
Alocasia Sarian, made it through the first freeze.

Hi Rachel, Are you planning to keep your Aroids in pots or are planting them out in the garden this spring? You have quite a collection!

Thanks phughes!!
The Ti plant came from Florida, the picture was taken on the day of arrival. It is now showing winter damage. I will wait for a while before ordering any more plants from there.
Your sweet Bella is prettier than any bloom, please give her a big hug for me.
This is Distichochlamys rubrostriata, a new species of ginger, it is the second year blooming . From Zone9 in Houston.

Oh how I miss Armando/Giancarlo. He was such an asset to DG. I didn't know him well but corresponded a couple of times through d-mail. He was so kind to help me identify a couple of Philodendron's and gave great advice on caring for them. He was a great gardener and a great artist! I remember him sharing photo's of his beautiful gardens that he took such pride in. I also remember photo's he shared of a cement patio he painted with a great design, and his encouraging me to try doing it in an area in the back of our house ... but I never got up the courage to attempt it . Heaven must have the most beautiful gardens with Armando tending them.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Lin,

You are completely right on the gardens, for he liked the ROOM, concept.

He originally raised Boxers for show and the old kennels served as the basis of the 'rooms'. (cement areas)

But, he was also an amazing artist. All the dogs that were the Champions of the family, he painted in oils. He also did portraits. He was an amazing, interesting and unbelievable gentleman. Oils in his home were all around and up the stairway. Some were just portraits of singular dogs and others were vignettes.

As you see, I miss him.

Rita, that is a beautiful Ti and it will recover from any cold damage quickly. Where did you find that one?

noonamah, Australia

Rita, your Alocasia Sarian looks a lot like this one of mine. I'd been looking for an ID for it.

I like the look of the red veins on the leaf of this Cyrtosperma johnstonii.

I think the petiole of Amorphophallus titanum looks great. Well, I haven't had a flower yet, meantime the petiole will do.

White is always hard to photograph, for me anyway. A friend recently gave me a purple in this - Spathoglottis plicata.

Rita, thank's but your collection out does mine tremendously! I will have to evaluate what goes in the ground or stay's potted again when the time arrive's;-)

Tropic, I have admired your "Swamp Taro" for a while now but your Cyrtosperma johnstonii is one that I have been admiring alot longer. How long have you had the plant? I hope you keep adding picture's of that particular Cyrtosperma as time goes along for you and for some of us to view as well.

Some site's state this plant as being Alocasia tigrina, although I can not find anything stating that Alocasia tigrina is an actual species. Anyone?

Alocasia zebrina

Beautiful shots! Thanks for sharing! Check it out:

Rachel, I checked the Kew data base and Alocasia tigrina isn't listed. There is Alocasia zebrina K.Koch & Veitch.

I've had the C. johnstonii about 4 - 5 months but still haven't got it in water. The stems are really great but too thin on this one to get a decent photo. This is a photo I took of the flower in the Flecker Botanic Gardens in Cairns last year. You can see the stem just behind.

A few weeks back I got myself some Cordylines. Some were unnamed. This one was labelled "John Klass".
