I love swing and big band too.
That's Entertainment!! Part 2
Yep, when they play it I'm the person in the car dancing in my seat, looking foolish to the other drivers, who cant hear the music:-)
Victor I made meatloaf for dinner... and can sing that song very well
Ha ha. Do you sing while you cook?
I always sing in the car.
sometimes... when doing cuttings or playing with seeds... there is usually a lot of singing
I loved Koyannisquatsi. Love 70s music too. I'm one of the ones that likes Brad Pitt.
I LOVE 40's jazz, Ella is my favorite
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9zsf7reJTo
I saw Ella in Newport (Jazz Festival) when I was a teenager. So glad I had the opportunity. Louis Armstrong, was there too. I don't think either of them lived much longer.
That would have been awesome!
It was!
Also had Duke Ellington, Cannonball Adderly, a very young Herbie Hancock, and Ike & Tina Turner and a buch of other great jazz musicians. I was 14 or 15.
Wow.
That's cool. But thanks a lot for killing Ella and Satch, Dave!!
I love so many from that era, including a number of lesser know. Some of my fave vocalists other than mentioned are Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Joe Stafford, Peggy Lee, Margaret Whiting, Helen Forest, Nat, Arthur Prysock, Billy Eckstine, Johnny Hartman to name a few!
Bands/leaders/musicians include Duke, Cab Calloway, Dorseys, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Paul Whiteman, Louie Prima and many more.
Wow Victor! Lots of my favorites in there too.Thats why I keep my turntable. I cant get rid of my old albums. Coltrane,Bird, Monk,Eddie Jefferson, Johnny Hartman. Not to mention my disco 12"'s.
Wow - you know Johnny Hartman, Joyce?!! Not many do. My dad had to be his biggest fan. Went to see him many times around the city. When he died it was like a family member died. Did you know Hartman was the only vocalist Trane ever recorded with? That album is one of the best ever. And talk about crazy coincidences, my sister used to work for a real estate company and a co-worker knew Hartman's daughter!
Wow! I have one of his albums, I think it is called The Voice That Is. I'll have to dig it out. I use to listen to it religiously. He has a voice like butter! I wish I had gotten to see him live.
Thats how I got into him, thru Coltrane. And mostly all of C's stuff was instrumental of course, so when I heard this vocal, I was blown away! I'll see if I can find it.
Jen, have you heard "Ella in Berlin"? Its so funny, on "How High the Moon" she is scatting and starts singing" I guess these people wondering what i'm saying". Too funny! She was one of those people born with perfect pitch.
I recently bought her postal plaque with the commemorative stamp and her pic on it and today, as a matter of fact, they were selling one of her CD's as a special postal deal or something. She is originally from Newport News which i didnt know till I moved here. Probably why the PO here always has her stuff for sale.

Victor, do you remember the jazz radio station in New York that went off the air in the 70's? It switched formats without warning and people lost their minds (including me) and they actually went down to the station to protest. It was a sad day in the city.
We have a Coltrain/Hartman CD. I'll go find out which one (ones) we have tomorrow.
Good info about XM.
I am considering
Yes, I do remember that jazz station.
They only made one album, Harp.
I think the Voice...' was his first.
XM is a good deal GE
Take a listen

watched a monster search show last night on bears - some of the show was about the black bear problem in NJ - was thinking about allison's problems the whole time
I watched it too!
Seems there were lots more 'story' songs in the 60's and 70's. Heard two while driving before. The Edmund Fitzgerald song and the Billy McAllister jumping off the bridge one. I like them!
Oh yeah. I said I'd go down and check the CDs. Be right back.
Ooops. I spelled his name wrong. You can tell it's DH's collection, huh? I know I've heard "My one and only love" played here. However, it seems we don't have the Coltrane CD where Johnny Hartman sings on it. We have: A Love Supreme, Giant Steps, Coltrane Plays The Blues, Impressions and Afro Blue Impressions.
OOOh, Harper you have all the good ones!! Your DH has good taste! I also like the "Gentle Side of John Coltrane", its more mellow.
LOve, Love, Love Billy McAlister, and Starry, Starry Night and American Pie. Yep, Victor, the ballads were the best IMHO.
Another twilight zone moment. My One and Only Love is not a very well-known song, but one og my favorite Hartman ones. I was taking an architecture class at Columbia and we had a few field trips. During one of them, in midtown, we walk by this street player going that song on the sax, and sounding exactly like Trane!!
WOW! is that syncronicity?
He certainly does have good taste. He could be my DJ all night. Oh, except when he starts playing Frank Zappa. Yah, yah, I understand he's brilliant and all that, I just don't like him!
Sounds like a nice moment Victor! Do you know that song by Joni Mitchell "For Free"? Your story reminded me of that.
No - not familiar with that song, Harp. I don't like Zappa (noise) either.
Who saw Ken Burns' Jazz? It was fantastic.
We have it on the Netflix queue.
I've seen a lot of Ken Burns but not that one. Anything he does is fantastic.
You would really like it.
Put it in my Netflix queque.
I saw most of Ken Burns Jazz. It is great. He puts things in historical & musical context.
Victor, I'm surprised to find another Louis Prima fan. I always think of Disney's Jungle Book too. It was fun rewatching that as an adult and seeing how well they captured him & his band in "I Want to be Like You" Or as Louie said "They made a monkey out of me"
No mention of Miles. I love early Miles David. Kind of Blue is one of my top ten all-time albums
Other people I saw at that Newport Jazz festival (didn't thinkanyone would know them, but we have some real jazz fans
Less McCann,Eddie Harris, Rashaad Roland Kirk (played 2 saxophones simultaneously) Roberta Flack. All I can remember.
Also saw RayCharles & Lionnel Hampton in other venues
Yes - loved Jungle Book for that reason. Prima was an interesting guy. We saw Bo Diddley a few years back. And I have posted before about the once in a lifetime experience of walking alongside Wynton while he played in the New Orleans style funeral procession for Lionel. Wish I had my camera.
We got to see BB King twice.
Didnt know that about Jungle Book. Interesting.
Les McCann. Did he do "Trying to Make it Real? Liked that back in the day.
Victor, you walked with Wynton? I'm impressed.
I saw Lionel in Syracuse. Amazing.
Betty Carter blows my hair back:-)
Yes, Joyce. I was at work on a Saturday morning. Finished getting the electrical system ready and went back to my office. I had a huge window that overlooked 125 street. Saw the procession and ran out!
Ha, I'd have been running with you! What a treat!
My dad used to work in the State building on 125th.
