That's Entertainment!! Part 2

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

News reporters don't play the part of 'Mother Theresa', their job is to help get ratings for the network. If they don't there's a few hundred out there that will and a few thousand that will do it for nothing.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I see the reporters have food and water, doubt they are sleeping in tents.
I stopped watching the disaster.
There was a couple on CNN last night who were lambasting the poor effort this country was making to rescur their daughter and 3 other American students who were at the Hotel Montana.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i heard last week, maybe 4 days after the earthquake that donations had already surpassed katrina and the tsunami - at that time it was 150 million and they only had counted 3 or 4 of the largest charities. sunday the red cross had collected 110 mill by it self, with only a third being distributed because of bottlenecks.
I have never trusted these charities to distribute what is collected, regardless of what they have claimed.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I agree Bill and would add from the donate-rs end a lot of whats promised as far as a donation, never arrives. I would be curious to find out what percentage of the promises are real money and not just promises. Charities must have figures for this.
Texted donations are real because the texter has it added to their phone bill.
Some contributers do it just for show,I think.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No - most donate by credit card these days. I trust the main charities - Red Cross, Salvation Army, etc. The bottlenecks are because of the problems on the ground, not the charities. Debris, transportation, corruption...

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I gave to the R.C. and when I ever I pay for something w/Paypal there is an button to give money to Hati, I do then too. Figure if I can afford another plant, I can help them. ^_^

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

it annoys me some that all this money has been donated to haiti and with katrina we felt the goverment here should take care of it. we should take care of our own first.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Now my temp is raised.
I wish the Haitians had the tons of money we have been sending corrupt officials on that Island.
Where does the money go?
We have been sending aide for years and they have substandard hospitals?
No disaster plan?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Well, you put out the fire first. You don't ask where the fire prevention money went. People are in severe need there. Rooting out corruption and cleaning up the politics is a separate issue in my opinion.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

The nhorrer stories will start next week I suppose.
I saw a program about Natalie whats her name who went missing in Aruba.
What a disaster that was. The mother is left with nothing resolved except a speaking tour to high schools where she councils young girls about travel ,bars and talking to strangers.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Diasters cannot always be planned for. The hospitals as well as the capitol building were demolished. An earthquake of that size and destruction, will take years to recouperate from. Remember, its an island. Not a huge land mass where aide can come cross country. An earthquake of that size would topple anything, no matter how well built, especially with the after shocks being just as huge on the rictor scale.

Even with Katrina, the U.S. plans didnt work so well and FEMA had all the money in the world.

I dont think a child missing in Aruba is of the magnitude of a natural disaster, although I feel for her parents pain.

I agree Victor, its not about the money. Right now its about helping and compassion. This could have happened anywhere.

I just pray because "there, but for the grace of God go I".

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

When there is a disaster like that it gets to be ‘dog eat dog’. Katrina showed us that and we didn’t like what we saw, or the things we heard happened while the cameras were off. When a country has a strong infrastructure it is more resistant to anarchy than when it has a weak one, assuming the country is large enough to ‘take a hit’. I say help the people of the tiny little island for the humanitarian sake and get out ‘but quick’!!
...while we still have some change left in our pockets!

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Because of the poor coverage and the "be a hero for a day" news reports, we may think we are the only ones providing aide. We are not. We may be in the best position, given the proximity, but 'our change" is not the issue.

I was oversees for the 9/11 hit and I watched the coverage on the BBC. I have to say they have a much more mature outlook when it comes to world news.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i agree we need to help and i know we were not even the first multi-national on the scene - i believe the Israelis were - still the country was ripe for a catastrophe with virtually no infrastructure to assist citizens the day before the quake - the lack of hospitals and doctor/nurses is not because of the quake - they did not have them.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

As I said above
Wasnt the years of tons of money supposed to bring this island into a better living standard?
I'd like to know how much per person we send there with such poor results as compared to a per person amount spent in this country.
If its close, there is something very wrong.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

They are still trying to dig out from Katrina and there is no government presence there at all, just all church youth groups spending what time they can.

I was thinking about Gitmo and how close it is to Haiti and was wondering if they can bring people there. I thought they had emptied out Camp X ray but they didn't so they can't house anyone there. but this is what they are doing...

Did you see the comment Hugo Chavez made??? "Why is Obama sending the military? he should be sending medicine and food" Duh!!! you stupid peanut brained dictator!!!! the military delivers all that to the people.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Heads up..........http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1070861/

Triad(for a few more, NC(Zone 7a)

just found this thread for talkin about movies. Though I only scanned them looks like we got off the topic? Are we talking politics, government, movies? Just let me know and I will jusmp right in I am a very opionated Irish/Italian Bostonian living in North Carolina until August, then I am COMING HOME!!!!!!!!! Yaaahhhhooooooooo!

So waht are we talking about?

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

We always get off topic here in the Northeast! .. It's like a 'badge of honor'! (lol!)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Entertainment, Sue!!! Chime in!

Triad(for a few more, NC(Zone 7a)

Ok, lets make it a trivia game and post a question. The first person with the correct answer will get some seeds mailed to them as a prize, my treat. Who's in? I get to post the first question. I love old movies and am a great trivia buff for them. (sinister giggle)

East Bridgewater, MA

Film trivia: who was "The Lemon Drop Kid"?

(I guess only those answers that come from your memory should count, since a quick look on a search engine can answer most film trivia.)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I will be honest and say I don't have a clue.. with out searching!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Bob Hope! Love that movie.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Jack Lemon! ... (no that would be too easy, lol!)

East Bridgewater, MA

Yes, many great films with Bob Hope and other beloved actors are no longer shown on TV like they were years ago, because they didn't make it into various cable "packages" that were sold off since 1980-ish.

We have an entire generation that hasn't seen a vast amount of the 20th-century films that should be part of their culture, unless an acquaintance loans it out of his VHS/DVD collection. It's a shame, really.

Here are just a few worthy of a quick view, if only to see the evolution of film:

"The Great Race" [physical comedy]

"The Last of Sheila" [murder mystery, nonpareil]

"11 Harrowhouse" [excellent British comedy-drama; might be under different title in USA; also, one version strips off the spoken narrative of Charles Grodin. No matter if you love or despise Grodin, the dry, witty, tongue-in-cheek narrative provided by Grodin makes this film laugh-out-loud funny.]

"The April Fools" [primarily a romantic comedy, but also an interesting time capsule of the late 1960's era "cool crowd"]

I'm sure you all can think of many other films that are rarely, if ever, shown....

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

And now with cable they hardly ever show an old movie on regular tv, I don't get to see any oldies.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Cable is all repeats and old movies are good once in awhile.
The rates are raising in Feb. for awfull programs unless you want to buy up to Showtime and HBO.
I rent Showtime series I want to watch, from Netflix.
I have seen t
TheTudors two seasons and started season 3 yesterday.
Modern theater version of the life of Henry8.
Fantastic.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Lots of original programming on cable these days.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

What are you watching Victor?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No drama. Just stuff on Discovery, Science Channel, History, Animal Planet, Nat Geo, Smithsonian...

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Same here.I like those channels best.
GF of mine contracted an illness about 5 years ago and will be on "Mystery Diagnosis" The team came to her studio to film. The program was supposed to air in October buy keeps getting pushed back.
I dont watch the animal rescue programs as much anymore, its too disturbing.
I watch a lot of Law and Order.
Burn Notice is another fave. Marathon all day yesterday.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What illness did she have?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Its a peripheral disorder that appeared mysteriously.
It affected her immune system. She lost her balance and was dizzy and weak. She was traveling when this came on her.
They sped home as she wasnt responding to flue meds, and she spent months in hospitals with tests and PET scans.
One Immunologist sent a blood sample to a Mass.lab and it came back AntiYo. We were so relieved when there was something concrete.
I googled it and nearly broke down when I read there was no cure symptoms progress until patient is put in a nursing home where they dwindle away.
Anti-Yo symptoms are always present where there is cancer in the reproductive system.
She had everything removed. Was referred to a specialist at Sloan in NYC.
He had about 75 patients with this rare condition and took her as a patient only because she could still walk.
She was put on a blood washing regemine for weeks and is on anti depressants and other meds. She needs a wheelchair and her speech is slurred but she is stil with us and communicates well.
You would never have believes a creative ,vibrant, active mother of 4 and artist in high standing ,could be reduced to what she is today and will be forever.
We used to call her the Polish Monkey. She would haul a double booth to shows and climb on top of a motor home to tie down the panels.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh how awful. With so many possible diseases/disorders, it's amazing most of us make it as long as we do.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

My sympathies GE. Its sad when someone we know is laid low with illness and becomes a shell of the person we knew. Much like Alzheimers. Hopefully a cure will be found soon. Or at least something to stop the progression.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

As a race we are not doing very well. Cancer the biggy.
Worse than the plague,I think.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

We are dealing with memory loss in my aunt. And she is resisting any workup or treatment.

We are supposedly doing much better with cancer in terms of survivability, but not in my circle.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

She has physical therapy 3 times a week to maintain what she has as far as mobility goes.
She has been like this for 5 years so we have ajusted to seeing her in her chair.
We still tell racy jokes and toss a few down.
She still runs the family.Hubby is a dream.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

You are right about certain forms. Breast lumps arent the death scentences they used to be and preventative tests catch it when its curable.
The really bad one now is the virulent form of breast cancer that maskes itself as breast tissue and is almost impossible to detect until the side effects show up elswhere. Not a good survival rate there.5 years is about the norm.
How come we are getting so morbid?
I'm gunna quit right now and go back to great Netflix rents I have seen lately.
I like many of the BBC shows and series of detective programs.
I just watched Jherico set in the 50's drole and dark.
