Help!! I feel so inept!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I need someone to give me the steps I need to take to attach photos of flowers from PF to my Trade List.
I have many pictures of my own in my documents Picture Folders and have NO trouble 'browsing" and attaching these--been doing it forever--but what does on have to do to attach a picture from PF??? Seems a lot of people do it...What am i missing!

My trade list is already typed up with pictures that I have attached. Have about 8 or so plants that i do not have pictures of.

Thank you for your help, Gita

When you add a plant to your list directly from PlantFiles, a photo will automatically be attached to that item. There are links beneath all the details of each plant, where you can add the plant to your journal or tradelist.

I was just going to say that too and Terry posted first. I added all my trade item directly from the PF, from there, you can edit & add all your additional notes like you have. And if you have your own image, then you can swap it for the one that's automatically added from PF.

Forgot to add, when you do add it from PF, it includes the clickable link back to those PF.

Maybe I did not explain well enough.

I did NOT add the plant from the PF to my Trade List. I just added it on my own--as I know what i have seeds for.
Now i am trying to add the picture of that plant description from PF to my own list--as i do not have it in my "pictures"...or cannot find it!

Will what you suggested still work??????

The only way to get it to add a photo from PlantFiles is to make sure the plant name exactly matches a listing in PlantFiles. And the easiest way to do that is to add it from PlantFiles, then add a comment or any other stuff you want to personalize it (but don't change the botanical name or cultivar name fields.)

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

To add a plant from PlantFiles:

Go to PlantFiles. Search for the plant you want to add to your Tradelist. Scroll down to the section called "Trading Tools" - you'll see two choices, each with checkmarks:

Click here to add this plant to your have-list
Click here to add this plant to your want-list

Click on the one you want, and voila! it's in your Tradelist.

I took a look at your list, and I agree with Terry - the problem is that you don't have the correct botanical name for the plants to which you want to add pictures. For example, "Basil" should have been added as being in the genus "Ocimum" and the cultivar is "Siam Queen." So when you were done your plant name would say, per PlantFiles, "Thai Basil" "Ocimum thyrisiflora" and the cultivar name would show as "Siam Queen."

This item will look totally different than any of your other listings. I added this one item to MY Tradelist (the only entry). Take a look at it so you can see what happens when you add a plant from PlantFiles.

I hope this helps and doesn't confuse you more. I know I get confused here a lot!

I don't think you can add pictures after the fact, but I could be wrong.

Gita, yes, as mentioned, we knew you didn't add it from PF by looking at your list. What I would do is go ahead and add them as faeden suggested and then copy and paste any of your additional comments you have already in your list, I know that took time to set up. Then you can delete any duplicates.
And yes, after a PF has been added and one of the posted images is included, you can edit it out and add your own image. You can see that's what I did with mine.

Thanks, Sue! I knew you'd know what to do!

I've found that I can add a plant to my trade list directly and if the genus and species name is correct, it automatically matches up with the plantfiles entry also.

Hi Linda, like the first one on your list, looks like a possible hummingbird magnet, is this the same one? http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/60921/

Yes, that's it. Guess you can tell I like hummingbirds and butterflies from the plants I grow!

Thank you all for the input....
A couple more questions and I will "rest my case"....

1--If I do it the way Terry and faeden suggested--which of the many pictures (shown on the right of the other information)
will actually end up on the trade list? Can I choose?
2-- If I add a picture from PF--do I need to give the person credit that took that picture? Or is it considered "public
domain"....

And as some of you found out--I do not know any Botanical/Horticultural names of any plants. When people use all those scientific names--I have NO idea what they are talking and raving about!
Having to look each one up would, hugely, add to my task.

I may just let it all go---people usually know what most of the common plants look like. Like--Purple Cone Flower.

Thanks again, Gita

Calif. Sue--I looked at your trade list and i see what you mean....

BTW--I have Chrysanthemum Pacificum--and have had it for years! Nice plant! Years and years ago--it was all the "New rage".....I have had it since then! Tough plant! Pretty foliage---Tip cuttings root easily.
Blooms--HUH?--So--So.....and very late--here anyways....like late October.....

Here's the plant sprawled in the bed. It is NOT a very good bed for anything to grow in, but this guy just hangs on and on.

Here is a close-up of the small, tansy-like blooms. Usually in November--here....

edited to say that each of the little blooms is about the size of an M&M candy.

You're welcome - glad to help.

I'll have to refer to Sue and Terry to answer your great questions. I, too, would like to know the answers!

1. The first one that appears in PlantFiles is what would appear next to your plant. Unless you have your own photo, which you can use to pre-empt it.

2. You don't need to add credit, since the photo is simply a link from PlantFiles. You're didn't copy or paste it.

"And as some of you found out--I do not know any Botanical/Horticultural names of any plants. When people use all those scientific names--I have NO idea what they are talking and raving about!

You can search PlantFiles by common names. if you use this search, http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?Search=Click+here+to+search+for+plants and type in just the common name, you'll come to the plant you're looking for. You will probably become more familiar with botanical names as a result. Here's the results for "purple cone flower:"

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher[common]=purple+cone+flower&searcher[family]=&searcher[genus]=&searcher[species]=&searcher[cultivar]=&searcher[hybridizer]=&searcher[grex]=&search_prefs[blank_cultivar]=&search_prefs[sort_by]=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search

And when I click on the first spelling suggestion (purple coneflower), here's what I get:

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher[common]=purple+cone+flower&searcher[family]=&searcher[genus]=&searcher[species]=&searcher[cultivar]=&searcher[hybridizer]=&searcher[grex]=&search_prefs[blank_cultivar]=&search_prefs[sort_by]=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search&searcher[common]=Purple%20Coneflower

Making sure your trades link to a PlantFiles entry has an added benefit - you will be included in the results on PlantFiles entries like this: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/26/ where it says "132 people have or want this plant for trade."

Thank you again Terry! You have been a great help.

I will have to really digest all this to see if I can work all this out. My brain seems to "shut down" when things get too technical.....I am an "old geezer" and comprehending things that I do not really comprehend turns off my attention span. It is like an automatic turn-off switch.....NO! Don't want to deal with this! I do not comprehend it! MENTAL SHUT DOWN!!!! I will just forget it! Do what I can......SAD!
Wait until you get in the 70's and have to try something you really do not want to deal with! Feel technologically challenged! It is VERY hard......

WHEN I have time--I will try to practice all this!

Thanks--Gita

You can do it! I'm almost 66, and I've figured out a lot of this "technical" stuff. The more I learn, the easier it gets. Dive in! Enjoy!

But when searching by common name, the common name you use may not be one of the common names listed on the entry. In that case, you won't find it. I've noticed that...I search by common name...nothing. Then I look up the botanical name and get it that way. I've noticed that sometimes the single common name listed for a species might not be one I've ever heard used for it. A couple of times I've requested that the common name I use be added to that entry, but usually I don't bother.

The only way for the PF editors to make things better is if you take a minute to tell them ;o)

There's a red "report an error" button on each page of PlantFiles (whether you're staring at a photo, or a full entry, or a list of search results.) Click on it when you notice something is wrong or missing, and jot them a note explaining your suggestion as precisely as you can. The system will record a link to the page you were on so they can easily backtrack and replicate your findings.
