Anything that seeks out voles where they lurk, and eats them is my friend! LOL Ric

Milkiy Spore works better than snakes andnot harmful to the envrionment.. It kills what the voles, moles and gophers eat and eventually the animals leave to the neighbors! LOL!

Well, the moles eat earthworms and the worms are my most valuable cultivators and fertilizers. And, the gophers munch on my garden plants. Obviously, I don't want either being killed off!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

It does not hurt the earthworms.. just grubs

This is the only lettuce I have growing right now. It's buttercrunch.

Wow! Looks yum!

Got the chickens in my pen where my lettuce is going to be. they are "tilling"!

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Just planted out my kohlrabi, Brussel sprouts, soloist cabbage, and broad-leafed Batavian Endive. I think I will direct seed some lettuce, too. Even though I generally have a ton of volunteers. I wonder if I can plant out my chard seedlings yet? Off to check the charts...

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

LOL! Still tilling

Sowed to the garden on 4/13/10 mixed leaf lettuces... need to do more

I'm growing a few Mainland Girl which is supposedly a hybrid from Taiwan designed for heat tolerance. I got it from Evergreen Seeds. I must say it's doing remarkably well considering the heat it has survived so far. It has been in the sun but I'm moving it under a tree. Little Gem has also been more heat tolerant than most. I've got that in the greenhouse in indirect light.

Here's Mainland Girl.

That's really pretty. Will it make a tight head eventually? I planted some mixed salad greens and some swiss chard yesterday. Got a light steady rain all night so it should do well.

Good lookin' lettuce twiggy. Be sure and let us know how much heat it can handle. I may have to look into that one for next spring. My lettuce is long gone;o( Of course now that I have 'maters starting - no lettuce...

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - a constant lament - why can't the lettuce and tomatoes arrive at the same time!?!

Twigs - lookin' REAL good! I could just reach in there and take a handfull. I hope mine do so well!

I had my first one for supper. Mainland Girl is a good one. It looked like it wanted to make a head but I don't think it will. These plants are getting old since I started them in mid January. Once it was in the bowl it looked like Iceberg but with more green. It had a nice crunch and mild taste like Iceberg. The leaves were easy to separate and wash.

I pulled this one but I'll cut the next one to see if it comes back. For sure, it will be back in the fall.

So it's a crunchy lettuce too? I'm not too big on the soggy lettuce leaves - lol...
