Lettuce for 2010 - Whats your line up?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Okay...to the right in the above pic, there's Buttercrunch in the back and Red Rapids in the front. Then there are dead oak leaves between the rows. LOL

Smarty-pants!!! The Red Rapids is what I was looking at, though I'm pretty sure that's not the variety I had in my mix. Looks similar, though.

Let us know if it tastes as good as it looks!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Red Rapids, just for you...

Oooohhhhh! I'm almost crying I want spring to come so very badly! I just put in some lettuce seed this past weekend. We ate up the last of the fall plantings at Christmas. Come on spring!!!!!

Thanks for the photo, stephanietx =~)!

Glen Ellyn, IL(Zone 5b)

My 2010 lettuces:

Red Sails - replaces New Red Fire [which I would still plant]
Coastal Star - replaces Jericho
Ermosa - replaces Adrianna
Nevada - irreplaceable
Summertime - irreplaceable
Tom Thumb
Little Gem

Moss Point, MS(Zone 8b)

I have Black Seeded Simpson, Little Gem and Mainland Girl. The latter is a leaf type bred for growing in Taiwan and South China.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

OK, Steph... Planting lettuce this weekend!!!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Okie dokie! Our lettuce survived the "great freeze" when we had a string of lows in the teens and highs in the upper 20s. We watered them well, covered them with some plastic an old mattress pad, and some moving pads. Most didn't have much damage at all!

Dayton, WA

My experience has been that lettuce will take a hard freeze down to around 10 to 15 degrees without any special protection. Gets much colder than that, and things get a little iffy! Most of my Fall planted lettuce overwinters in the garden just fine.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks for that info, Lettuceman. This is the first year we've grown lettuce, so it's been a learning experience for us.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

If anyone wants the Simpson, D_MAIL me... will need a SASBE

Okay, here's what I have ...
Tom Thumb
Simpson Elite (hate to hear about that one. Thought it sounded like a good one.)
Braveheart
Green Romaine ... That's from Johnnys. Sure hope that turns out to be like what's in the store. :-)
~Susan

Dayton, WA

The Simpson Elite is a very good lettuce. A little more compact and slightly more frilly than the Black Seeded Simpson. Tastes great also! The Johnny's Romaine is probably as close to the store-bought variety as you can get. My favorite romaine is still the Paris White Cos, but I also like Olga and a variety called Plato II

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Hey Lettuceman,
I seeded a literal, huge clear plastic salad "bowl" with Paris White Cos Romaine on Sunday. Hoping to just pick baby romaine from the salad bowl all season long and keep the lettuce coming!

Romaine.

My kinda eatin'!

Dayton, WA

Sounds like an interesting project, Gymgirl. Romaine lettuce lends itself particularly well to a cut & come-again harvesting method, as do the French Crisp lettuces. After your post, I can almost taste that Ceasar Salad!!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I had a salad today with lettuce and spinach from my garden. It was delish! :)

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

Lucky dog!

Marquez, TX(Zone 8b)

Lettuceman. Where do you get your Paris White and French Crisp Sierra seeds from?

Dayton, WA

dennist, the only place I've been able to find that still carries the Paris White Cos is RH Shumway. Vermont Bean Seed Co. used to be a reliable source for the Sierra variety, but no longer. I am increasingly having to rely on saved seed for the Sierra. I can still find the Nevada cultivar offered in a few seed catalogs. Nevada is the same thing as Sierra, except all green and not nearly as pretty. There used to be an outfit in San Jose, CA that carried both of these, but I can't remember their name--getting careless in my old age. Maybe someone here in Dave's knows. Meanwhile, I'll continue saving the Sierra seed each year. It's just too irreplaceable in my garden!

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm pretty sure that Cherrygal.com has Paris White. I almost got that one one my last order. Hope this helps.....

Glen Ellyn, IL(Zone 5b)

Territorial Seed carries Nevada, and so I think does Johnny's Selected Seeds, which has a vast selection. Nevada would certainly be irreplaceable in MY garden! If I could only grow one lettuce, this woud be it.

The one I can't find this year is Anuenue, which is close in quality to Nevada.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

I got mine from Cherrygal!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I got all my lettuce seeds from Cherrygal. I have enough from my order in the fall to plant more for the spring and will probably have enough to do again in the fall!

While going through my seeds today I found some Salad Burnet. If anyone wants to trade anything on my list for a few of those prized ones I'd love to try them. I'd also be willing to go halves on an order ... but the shipping is horrid for a pack of seeds. :-)
~Susan

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

But they have soooo many OTHER seeds, too... I PROMISED myself NO NEW SEEDS this year. ("You canNOT buy ANY new seeds until you use up some of the old seeds, "young" lady!" Major euphmism there!) But then i come on to Dg and there are soooo many really BAD, BAD people here! No news seeds, hmmmm...but, but, but...

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

How about old seeds! LOL!

Ok, the wilty Simpson seed is still being offered.. Dmail me to send a sbase

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

I visited a DGer this weekend who was growing the Black Seeded Simpson.

Yep.

It's not the lettuce for me!

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

LOL! Its a good size pak!

Thanks a *lot *! Linda ... You're really making me feel positive! LOL

And, Sequee ... You mean I have to use ALL these old seeds before I can purchase new ones? Impossible!! ^_^ I've been cataloging all morning. Y'all are positively horrid influences!

~Susan ... who still hasn't had lunch so is off to do so ...

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Okay, folks, here's part of the lettuce bed before the rains and winter sets in again starting tomorrow.

Waaaa! I want lettuce! I had some beautiful romaine and let the cold get it. I can't find my picture but will post it when I do. I *will get my seeds started! I WILL!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Grow some in a pot near a sunny window!

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Even in NY lettuce will grow indoors on an east-facing window sill.

Actually Ms. Susan, YOU'RE the one! If you hadn't said "share an order", I wouldn't have even gone looking. Hrmph!

I can grow it outside in my zone. I even have a GH my DH got me for Christmas ... I've just got to get my rear in gear! :-) I'm working on it. LOL

You see something we need to share?

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

At a casual glance, I found a few things that I simply MUST have. LOL! I will make a list and you can let me know what, if anything you would like to share. ~:-)

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

I've got a HUGE, round, clear plastic bowl with a lid. Been holding on to it since last year. Finally burned holes in it and planted lettuce seeds Sunday. It's sitting out on the spa cover and is making some lovely droplets on the inside.

There was yet another lunch meeting at work today. Fruit was served, in what? A clear plastic salad bowl with a lid!

Salads from the salad bowls...

^^_^^ ♪♪♫♫♪ (me doing the bowl dance -- the SUPERbowl dance!!!! For my Saints!)

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)
