Weather Forecasting Folklore

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL ~ that thought had crossed my heat broiled brain too.

C'mon fall!!!

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Well,I don't know about cicadas... but my old-timer/friend Buster said today everything since June has been at least a month earlier than usual, so it wouldn't surprise him for winter to be early too.

Richmond, TX

It was early last year here, at least - snow at the beginning of December!

Caneyville, KY(Zone 6b)

Whew, finally was able to get this page to load!

Welcome Crit! Don't know much about the history of my town name. We're transplants here and can't find much info.

Heard the first cicadas 2-3 weeks ago. Can't imagine having a frost the 2nd week of September, but anythings possible.

I've had the same problem with earlier than usual stuff. Junebearer strawberries produced in May. May Peonies bloomed in April. All the cole crops did fantastic till early May, then bit the dust. Hate to see winter coming, but I'm sure sick of the heat. However...knock on wood...this week has been wonderful, temperature-wise.

I need to go back and read this whole thread, because I've forgotten most everything mentioned.

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

My hometown was named for the Caney River that runs outside of town and Caney Indians that use to live along it.

Madison, TN

Didn't see any info re the weather and corn silks. My grandmother always said thicker corn silks meant a colder winter.

Quote from darius :

Also according to folk legend, when you hear the first song of the dog-day cicadas, it means there's just six weeks until frost.

The only cicadas I’ve heard were screaming as they fell out of the sky on flaming wings. The sun/heat has been a real basket this year. I agree with Pod … come on fall!

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

I recently heard some older folks at a cafe discussing their weather lore...they where discussing that the first hard freeze happens 90 days after the first summer cold front. .....I didn't stick around long enough to hear how they determined the first one.

Caneyville, KY(Zone 6b)

Been too busy to notice any of the folklore signs, but I did notice that some of our trees have leaves falling off and changing color already. It's hard to imagine having a really hard winter, after this summer of excessive heat. Why can't it just be mild winter with warmer than average temps? I know...wishful thinking. LOL!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I think that is what the Old Farmers Almanac has said lies ahead. We'll see...

Sunshines2day ~ "summer cold front" sounds like a contradiction in terminology. I had to chuckle when I read that.

I have leafs turning colors and falling also but I think it’s more from the heat that anything else. I since we didn’t get any rain yesterday I will have to start soaking my plum trees this morning. The leafs are looking bad and starting to curl. I just wish we would get a good soaking rain.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, good, slow and soaking... for a few days. Or at least till we cry uncle!

Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Pod, what are your predictions on this coming winter?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Not a weather prognosticator here, sorry. I've not even heard the old timers make a comment this year.

Even the normal indicators may be upside down here as there is much oil/gas activity going on in this neck of the woods.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Early Frost; Early Winter

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Gonna throw my 2c worth in here. We went from 100+ one week to 80's the next week ... now back to the 100's. I'd say that was our 'summer cold front', and 90 days would be the end of November. Sounds about right.

I don't know the difference between a 'dog-day cicada' and a plain ole noisy cicada, but I know they have been howling here! Don't think we will have frost as early as mid October. However, I have seen it snow on Oct. 22 here. I remember 'cause it is a friends birthday. Didn't snow a lot or stick much, but still snowed.

I've seen the leaves turn and fall early because of the lack of water and heat. It is a coping mechanism, conserving it's energy.

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Crit,

...sounds about like it is here in Lubbock Texas

Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Ya'll are scaren me.

Pod, we got a whole almost a 1/2 inch this afternoon.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Raining all around us... we must not be paying the preacher enough.

So Lizards_Keep ~ what are your predictions on this coming winter?

Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Don’t know. Last winter and this summer have been so screwed up most anything can happen now. However I believe we are going to have an unusually cold and dry winter. I hope I’m wrong but I think our weather patterns are starting to change. I guess we will find out for sure when it happens.

Yeah, my pear trees are really taking a beating right now. Everything else looks like it might do alright.

My horse is a good indicator of weather. If his tail is wet, it's raining. If it is blowing out behind him, it's windy. LOL

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Crit,

That's the most accurate indicator I'm seen on the entire thread. Too funny.

lizards_keep,

Keep lizards? (I'm a snake gal)

Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Naw, lizard is just a nickname I picked up years ago. Our place here is referred to as lizards keep by friends because of the abundance of lizards we have.

Oh I see. Better than being called Rat. LOL

Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

This is true. But I have been called worse over the years. }=0)

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

Texans are resilient. No matter how you name us :)

Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Yep, we’re just misunderstood by the rest of the world. Lol But right now I’m on cloud nine … we got a little over 2 and a half inches of rain this morning. We could use about ten more but I won’t complain about what we got. This has been one of hottest summers I can remember.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Amen... on the 'hottest' summer. DH says I am just getting old and not remembering.

Two and 6/10s inches here. We are finally blessed but always looking for more.

Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Starting Monday I think is our next chance of rain. Sure hope we get some more of it soon cause it’s going to take a bunch to get caught up. There’s what looks like light rain near us now on the radar but then again it might just be ground clutter. Must be getting a little over anxious after that first taste of rain the other day. lol

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

what is DH?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Sorry Crit ~ it's another one of those computer acronyms ~ Dear Husband. Somewhere here there is a thread that lists a bunch of them. I'll see if I can find it and link it.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Couldn't find a specific thread but here is a ton of them... some are pretty obscure and some you will see used frequently. There are plenty more but this is more than enough.

Thanks podster. There are a bunch of those that I already use, but a BUNCH of them that are new to me. I've seen several on DG but didn't know what they meant. I just tried to figure them out. :-) I appreciate you taking the time to write all that out for me. You're a peach.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

You are welcome but please, just ask any of us if you see something that makes no sense. I've been in the same boat.

Osseo, MN

New to the forum here learning quite a bit from everyone here, but I wanted to post one that I heard from my husbands grandpa.

When the flies get sticky frost is a couple weeks away

Didn't pay much attention to it but then I noticed come mid to late September the flies would circle and never leave you alone when we visited the farm. Sure enough a couple weeks later we had a light frost. Kinda scared about this winter though, the flies were sticky last week.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

There is something to that fly business. Right before a cool front comes thru, we notice the flies cover up the large plate glass windows at work. They will flock indoors when the door gets opened. The weather change is predictable and your Grandpa in law is right on the money with this one!

And, welcome to this forum. Hope to see you often.... pod

Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Yep greetings seneisen and welcome.

Pod - we got another 3/4 inch Sunday. Maybe the dry spell is over for a while.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

No way... no rain here.
And when will this humidity ever end?
I do NOT remember a summer this grim in recent years. (or is it just me ~lol)
Please remind me of that when I gripe about cold and shorter winter days.

Medina, OH

Going back to my New England roots-the old yankees used to say that there wll be no frost 'till the wells are full.
