I saw that it's been disabled when I tried to search for something. Any progress on fixing it?
DG Search Engine
I was getting quite a few reports of slowness on the site. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1064713/
Since disabling it, the site is fast again.
When the search will come back, I don't know. Maybe this week or next.
Can the site-wide search be configured to search the forums? Since the search has been disabled, I've found many reasons that I wanted to search for postings. : )
When you are in the forums, you'll find a search box (and a search link near the top) to search the forum posts ;o)
Terry,
Dave has disabled the forum search feature...said it was due to performance problems. I was wondering if there was another way to check forum postings.
You can always use Google--just put davesgarden.com in the line along with whatever term(s) you're searching for, or use the advanced Google search and limit results to only those on davesgarden.com
I'm addressing the search issue today and hope to have a new solution soon.
With great success comes great headaches....grin. and a lot of catch 22's.
I so love our search feature for searching the forums and also I use it to find particular entries I have made to PlantFiles. I can't wait to get it back! Thanks Dave!
And to add to Ecrane's comment about Google. I was just in total dismay without the search function just now for I was looking for a particular bamboo picture I thought I had entered in PlantFiles but did not remember the name of the bamboo. So I went to Google and just typed in "Dave's Garden Kell Bamboo PlantFiles" and up came many of my bamboo entries to PlantFiles. WOW! I was so impressed!
Sadly, none seem to be the 1 picture I was looking for, LOL! Perhaps I did not enter it or perhaps the list is not complete. But always good to know this kind of search is available.

Kell, Here's another thing you can try to see if you've entered a particular photo into PlantFiles...
Go to "My Info" up at the top of your screen (second line, just below "Guides & Information"),click on that, then scroll down to see "Kell's Contributions". Anything you've posted to PlantFiles will show up there, including your images.
Hope you can find that elusive picture! Barb
Yes but I have 7,000 pictures in PlantFiles so it is a tough way to find 1 photo. LOL. With the search function, I could search PlantFiles by genus under my name.
OOPS............. I just went to my images just to check what I already thought I knew because I have gone there a million times and I never once noticed the box that says Limited to. So much easier to search that way then even with the search funtion.
I tell you, I learn something new everyday! Thanks so much for having me look again with my eyes open this time, Barb!
And no, the picture was not there but I took the 2 minutes to go to another hard drive for 2006 photos and found it immediately! A huge bamboo grove in the Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco.
One of my favorite pictures too!
Beautiful! Is that ZuZu in the picture?
Yes Marilyn. At the Strybing. I think Sue was there too that day. Were you Sue?
Nope.
Well we sure missed you!
Yeah, sure!
Is search broken again? : )
I was just starting to look for something, but got the message about search disabled...I'm severely handicapped if I can't search--because I can't possibly remember all the good stuff here.
Here's the workaround that I posted earlier in the thread for another way to search when the DG search isn't working:
You can always use Google--just put davesgarden.com in the line along with whatever term(s) you're searching for, or use the advanced Google search and limit results to only those on davesgarden.com
I took the search engine offline for the time being again.
The good news is that the guys at internet brands are experts at search and they are going to make a new search engine for our forums. ^_^
That would be a nice perk. I know there are benefits to be had.....just cautious....grin
E3 -- i use that all the time... I find things pretty quickly using google and just adding "daves" into the search.
I was doing a lot of adding hostas to my journal [which i'm still trying to learn] and i'd type in the plant and daves, and Plantfiles was always the top link.
If i wasn't in PF already, i'd use the search words of "hosta finder" and it would take me right to the PF link for all hostas...
Google works like a charm.
I'll even track down threads that way too. If i know I read it on Daves, I can find the thread using google with the right search words.
