Buggy's going out of business!!!!???

silver spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I just this minute read Buggy's add in classifieds. She has a huge sale going and states she's concidering not replanting because she's had it with all the difficulties she's encountering. I can't believe it. I'm so bummed out!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

She told me she was discontinuing the Lilies because the dogs and deer ruine the fences and beds.
I had only placed 1 order with her,I'm bummed too.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

It is sad how difficult it is to make a decent living farming. They are some of the hardest workers in the country. It is difficult too with healthcare costs to maintain any sort of decent existence. Yes, I mourn, but I do not blame her as she has struggled with this for years. She (Lisa) has been a gift to lily lovers everywhere and I feel fortunate to have her lilies, may of them, in my gardens.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I always say"It aint over til the fat lady sings"
Cheers for Lisa

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I was speaking to a lily grower two weeks ago in Oregon, and they were saying due to the abrupt freeze they were working like crazy to do something with the lilies. I don't know what happened out there, but that was in the same state as Buggy. I hope she didn't lose a lot of her bulbs.

I was looking forward to ordering from her for the first time next year, as I missed it this year. I really wanted to see the huge lily bulbs.

Let's hope she reconsiders closing, but I would certainly understand if she didclose. No sense driving yourself insane over a business.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

amen

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

The fat lady hasn't sung yet. Let's hope. I placed my first order with her too. Wonderful bulbs. Wish I'd known about her earlier. Then I could have helped to spread the word.

Lebanon, OR

Well Lisa and I got down to about 4-6F here in Lebanon, we live about 6 miles apart but she is higher than I am. I talked to her today and she said that yes, she lost alot but doubtful going out of business as the lilies are the best sellers for her. The daffs and other bulbs that were out are almost all gone.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Thank you Dee for adding clarification. Lisa is such a hard worker. I wish I had more space to put in more lilies.

My low temps here in town were 9 degs. two nights in a row and my water meter froze. I was without running water for almost 5 days before it thawed.

I'm afraid I may have lost many lily seedlings I planted out in the fall. I don't mulch as it is usually not needed here. Time will tell...

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

How awfull.I am so sorry.

Lebanon, OR

The plumbing in my heated greenhouse burst because we had not gotten the plumbing insulted as it was the last to be done. So what we did was to just cap it off and Mon will redo the plumbing and insultant so I can have water in there.

Hope you did not loose any of the lilies seedlings. So far I have not lost any of Ginny Prins seedlings.

Getting some more lilies this year.
from Mak in Stayton. Can even pick up which is nice.

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Well Dee, I might just have to invite myself over when your lilies are in bloom this summer!

I'm hoping the lily society will visit Mak's breeding operation this summer. His greenhouse of blooming orientals is to die for. This past summer the visit was canceled due to the heat wave.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Well, that's good to hear there's hope yet.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

i just got my end of the year clearance lily bulbs. gorgeous. i love her bulbs. i love everything i have ever gotten from buggy. sure hope she can find a way to keep going.

Chippewa Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

I just got mine too. I'm in the frozen zone and Lisa checked the temps to send when there was a slight break. Wonderful, huge bulbs-and appear frost-free! Hope we don't lose such a special grower...........

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

She was kind enough to hold my order until the below freezing temps here passed (Lisa was watching my weather report and let me know about the freezing temps). Just received it today and all I can say is Why the heck did I wait 4 years to order from her?!
Each of the two boxes had one of her Blooming Onion size bulbs--and all the rest were much bigger than any other bulb brokers I've seen or received. Each box had about 30 mixed bulbs. Tons and tons:)
Hope she'll be around in the future--providing that I have any place left to plant more lilies:lol:

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I recieved an assorted Asiatic (28) bulb order from her in November. There were nearly 38 bulbs. What a gal.

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

I was very disappointed to go to her site to see about everything sold out & a note saying she is done & will no longer have anymore Lilies for sale, at the end of the note she is directing people to Faraway Flowers, This is very sad, as I never got the chace to order from her & reading all the rave reviews about the size of her bulbs I had full intention of ordering this year... No Smile Today:(Anita

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

This is really sad.
Lisa was a great lilyn grower.
I am waiting until spring to see if she reopens with a few choice ones.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

I'm hoping too. Maybe with some support on here she'll stay in the business. I'd sure love to see it.

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

Maybe we can petition her back in business:) I am truly sad I did not get the chace to order & I do hope she changes her mind, but it must be just devastating to not have any control of her own land, I can relate to that, my neighbors horse, goat & many sheep would come over here ALL the time, my retarded neighbor kept telling me Well, my horse will not eat your flowers, WELL NO MAYBE NOT, But after it had walked on them with his massive weight (I have no clue how heavy a horse is, but I know the damage he done) I lost MANY plants, some my mother had started me from seed, They can not be replaced, iris rhizomes just squashed to nothing, oh it was bad, & the goat that thing would eat anything in its path, the sheep only eat the grass in my yard, this went on for a few years, many phone calls & nothing, They just kept telling me to take him to court for damages, hard to prove or even put a price on the beautiful flowers my Mom had started:( finally one day I was over it, I made one last phone call & I told animal control if nobody was going to do anything about this, I would get a chair & reach my husbands gun (I would not do this, but they did not know it) and take care of the situation myself, Well low & behold it wasn't 20 min I had animal control & a state trooper at my door, they must have told the neighbor of my threat, as he got rid of all the animals, I know it was not the animals fault, it was HIS fault for not fixing the old nasty fence, that was filled with escape routs for them. I would not recommend trying this threat, as the trooper told me he could have arrested me for it.
Not sure if this link will go right to the one of all of them over here or not, but it is listed as Neighbors GRRRRRRRR

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

That is quite a herd you have visiting your yard! I'd be grumpy too--my only dog incident was one of the neighbors let his big dog hang his heiney over my tub of strawberries and crap in it...I had to throw them away once I found the "gift".

My problem is the children at the apt. complex. Nothing to do after school, weekends, summer break etc. so my flowers are in danger as are any plant supports as the boys want to hit each other with the bamboo stakes. I've finally got most of them to just ask if they want a flower so I can cut it off for them. So far so good:)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Pets are great, it's their owners that are the problem. You're more patient than I am NY, I would have zinged them in the butt with a BB.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

You know, some people just don't get it. They are walking their dogs, with a child sometimes behind them walking another dog, and allow the dog to walk ten feet onto your property, lift a leg and do its business on a shrub. They don't understand that your garden is something to which you devote time, energy and money.

When I see people doing that, I sing out in a cheerful but firm voice " could you curb the dog, please?" Or with children, "hi, would you please take the dog out of the yard?" They look startled, but the do it, and it doesn't tend to recur.

I still don't get it though. Would you think it was OK to let your animal poop or trample this?

I can echo your frustrations. I have several dogs (well, 6 including a foster) BUT they are secure in my fenced yard. They don't get out, don't crap in others yards, don't cause problems. My neighbor behind us lets his dog roam. This summer she broke the door off of my chicken coop and killed 15 chickens in one fell swoop (gigantic exhibition white wyandottes too)!! I found out who she belonged to and asked them to keep her up, asked for reparations. Got nothing. She came back, dug into my coop, and killed all remaining wyandottes except one, a rooster of course, which she took home. They called me saying that my chicken 'trespassed' in their yard.

Gah!

Here we can legally shoot a dog if it is harassing livestock. Perhaps buggy needs to get a couple chickens and a shotgun and practice SSS (shoot, shovel, and shut-up). I love dogs, I mean, I *really* love dogs, but there is a limit. It's the fault of the owners, but unfortunately you can't get rid of them.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Ultasol, how awful! Here we do have laws about leashing your dog and cleaning up after them (but it doesn't cover digging plants up and killing them!) I grew up with a German Shepherd - we got him when I was six and, bless his heart, I was able to come home between semesters in college and spoil that sweet old dog.

Ever see "It's Me or the Dog"? Victoris Stillwell, dog trainer extraordinary (queen of positive reinforcement) says that the problem isn't poorly trained dogs - it's their poorly trained owners!

I admire your restraint.

BTW, I just ordered from Buggy's. I am thankful I was able to get an order in, and I am sure I will have a positive experience based on all the good feedback I have seen here.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I wouldn't take it seriously that she is done with lilies....she has done this before.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just what I was thinking.

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I think it is a tough business and when you work long hours and get very little in return, one must evaluate how worthwhile it is. Lilies are Buggy's passion and so far it has beat out the circumstances, but I certainly do take her circumstances very, very seriously. Given her circumstances, you just never know. The best thing we can do is support her by buying her products while they are available. She is very gifted in what she does, I always am in hopes that the passion wins out over the awful situation she is in.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

AMEN.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

magnolia you said it. i can't wait to get some more lilies from her. ultasol i'm excited for you. really really beautiful bulbs. and so freshly dug.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

ABSOLUTELY. I'll buy them to give as gifts if I can't use them.

D

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

I went back to the site and there are still a few of the individual varieties left--just gotta hunt em down and looks like the box deals are still available. I'm so tempted to shop again:lol:

I will just have to be sure to keep up to date w/ the site through the 2010 season--hope still is there as long as she keeps the site up and accessible, right? =) I know I had purchased seed from her waaaayyyyy back when I think she was still selling on eBay and she related similiar frustrations so who knows...just hoping for the best for her whatever that turns out to be:)

I'm still sitting here next to my Franken-bulbs...just luvin them:lol:

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Really and truly I am happy to buy less bulbs and instead of supporting the cheap and bulk, support unique growers and hybridizers that take the time to grow and evaluate their lilies, dig, wash and pack their lilies. It's important for me that people make a good, fair living doing what they do best.

And yes, when you want to give a gift that keeps on giving, freshly dug lilies are tops ;) Donna you are so right!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

What's a Franken bulb? What did I miss?

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

Just what I was calling the jumbo bulbs I got in my mix boxes:lol: About the size of a softball--leaning towards a little bigger than actually! I'd heard and seen a few pictures of those $10-$12 monsters on her site but I had to see one:) I've never had lily bulbs grow as big as these...so...Franken-bulbs:)

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

PERFECT dmac! I love it ;)

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

you mean she still has some box deals? oh my word dmac. you didn't have to tell me that.
what
are
you
thinking.

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

magnolia...Ditto to AMEN above. I agree 100% with your comments re: supporting buggy and wishing her better.
She is a unique and exceptional personality...I'd love to meet her.

mamajack...You're not at 25 below zero! You can order two or three or four box loads from her right now!...Talk about zone envy. What I wouldn't give to be able to live up here ('cuz I love it), but still be able to leave all my bulbs in the ground...Get ordering!
