I just had another bloom out "wrong," this time from eflowergardens rather than from Willow Creek (who had supplier issues this year but is going all out to make everybody happy). My 'Picotee' bloomed out rather like 'Santos'... go figure! Still very pretty!
I don't think yours is 'Charisma' either, ladyG.
I just sowed some seeds from 'Scarlet Baby' (x self, most likely). http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7402087
I also have seeds from the not-Ruby-Meyer bulb that looks similar to 'Bogota'... I crossed one bloom with itself and another with something else, but the tags fell off, so all I know is that I have 2 different crosses from the same parent. The bloom in this photo is the one that I crossed (see how I removed the pollen bearing anthers so it wouldn't also self pollinate?) http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7447774 I might just mix the seeds together since I really only know 1 parent.
If anybody wants seeds... there are extras! (but I don't want to trade for more amaryllises... am still hoping for seeds from a couple other varieties I have here that are just starting to bloom)
Amaryllises of the Mid-Atlantic: Share your blooms!
My Charisma has a very large bud that is getting ready to pop. So will shall see if it is truly named.
The misnamed Santos looks a lot like Rosado or Sumatra. It is a pretty little thing. : )
Just got the Cybister today. It has two buds on it & two tiny bulbs attached and I will wait til the bulbs get their roots before I separate them from Mom. Cannot wait.
WOW That is really pretty. Have to put that on next's years list. LOL
................:o((
Mine are all mostly leaves---still. The BIG pot, with the 5 bulbs in it, has 3fairly leggy (lack of light?) bloom stalks that might open in a week or so.
I do not see any blooms coming on any of the other 4 pots....One of those is pink and one is white. Bummer!!!!
Gita
Gita, treat them better this summer and cross your fingers. I've got a couple dozen amaryllis bulbs down in the basement (some planted 3 to a pot), and they've been neglected the last year or so and didn't bloom (bulbs are on the small side now). I'm going to try to plant them into the deck bed this spring and hope that some regular watering and feeding will beef up the bulbs for bloom next winter!
This one is just finishing up... I bought it as 'Picotee', which it clearly isn't LOL, but I like it!
Here's 'Hercules'. It's a huge bulb in a big pot on the floor... the blooms reach halfway up the lower window! Since I took this photo, a second bloom stalk has unfolded. The first stalk has 7 buds/blooms (more than I think I've ever had on an amaryllis) and the new one has 6 (4 open so far). It's a deep rose-pink, very striking!
Jill--What is the best fertilizer for Amaryllis all throughout the summer?????
G.
Gita, anything is better than nothing... whatever you give other plants will be fine, whether it's compost tea or Osmocote. They like to be watered, also, I think. I didn't get my basement ones planted outside last year, just left them on their shelf, and I'm pretty sure the main problem with that it they didn't get watered often enough for active growth. They survived, though -- tough plants!
I think I'll wait for Brent & Becky's sale next winter to get more, Charisma has 5 blooms on this stalk. I'm very happy with it and it sure helps with the cabin fervor. LOL
Hercules sure is one to look for !
I used Jobe's plant spikes cause I am too busy with other things to water everything in the greenhouse with fertilizer, and they worked great. Unfortunately, I can't find them in Lowe's or Home Depot. My Cybister has two buds when I got it, another big red one (will take a pix when the flower is fully open), and a small one are in bud and I picked up an Apple Blossom, along with another couple NOID's on the raffle table at the Hobby Greenhouse Meeting. Holly was sitting right next to me.
LadyG, we also got some good deals last fall from Bleek (eflowergarden) and BloomingBulbs, as well as Mamajack's co-op with Willow Creek.
A nice person on the ID forum identified this as H. striatum. Way to go!!! Now if I can just get the other one identified, I can make up the tags. Enjoy the spring and your ammies.
There are a lot of different reds, and it's hard to tell from a photo just what shade it is (deeper red, more orange, etc)... Do you have a list of suspects? The petals seem a bit too slender for 'Red Lion', and the color on 'Benefica' should probably be deeper...
I love the delicacy of the one with the yellow markings!
Thanks Jill so very much.
Oh, Buttoneer and LadyG--those Amaryllis are so pretty!!
I am in the same boat at Gitagal--mine has mature leaves now but I don't yet see a flower stalk coming up. Wonder if it actually will pass this season without flowering or what? I thought the bulb looked like it had been halved or shrunk.en. It wasn't as big and globulous as the previous season.
Mine, the one in the big pot of 4-5 bulbs, has, by now 4 bud stalks. One is blooming. Nothing spectacular--your regular, red Amaryllis. Still need to take a picture!
None of the other 4 pots have any buds coming out--so far! BUMMER!!!!!!
I hereby promise to take better care of my Amaryllis this Summer while they are outside---Cross my heart!
Yeah, right--she says after her oath!
G.
Wow, thats a lot of blooms. What do you feed it? Very pretty.
During the summer I feed them with the water from my pond or from my fish tank. otherwise I am kind of lazy on the fertiliser...
That is the best water, I dip from my watergarden often in the summer. Thumbs up for fish poo!
And it is FREE. I use it also for my plants indoor orchids african violets, name it and they are doing just fine ...
WHOOPIE!!!!!
Here is my BIG pot of Amaryllis--finally blooming---IF you can see the blooms amid all those long leaves it grew!
Nothing like all your beautiful blooms! There are 5 bulbs in this pot---and I only see 4 bloom stalks so far.....NONE on the ohter 4 pots! Bummer! One of them is a pretty pink and one is white.....
Seems on everyone else's pictures, the leaves are wayyyy down there--and the bloom stalks are waaaay up there.....
Just another issue I have to attend to this Summer.....FEED! FEED! FEED!!!! Water...water...water......
Gonna keep them where i can see them! I promise! and takr better care of them...I promise!
G.
Promises, promises... LOL Those are lovely, Gita!
I got an amaryllis cousin in the mail today -- a yellow Clivia! Gita, I know you can tell me how to make it thrive -- please?
Critter if you want it to do well ignore it. LOL
I
Jill--
The yellow ones are much more valuable than the orange ones....
Holly's advice is right on. The one my friend gave me had been in the same big pot for 30+ years and had never been fertilized....I hope you remember all the pictures of me dividing it.....
They DO thrive when pot bound--but 30 years????? It was in FULL bloom when i got it.
I know you can take them outside for the Summer--but keep them in bright shade. No direct sun.
Don't know much about feeding--I would think sticking to some kind of sea weed or kelp would be best....
I learned a lot about this plant when I went to PF and scrolled down and read all the comments section. That is where the best info comes from.
IF yours ever makes seed--you can sell each seed for a lot of money.
Here is mine when I got it in in Spring of 2008. VERY, VERY rootbound and blooming away. My friend, Helen, had kept it in a sun room all winter every year.
Gita
Thanks! I do remember that big pot, Gita. This is a good sized plant but probably still a year or two away from blooming... $20 from Easy To Grow Bulbs (good price, and I got it for less with a co-op discount!).
