Fertilizing a lemon tree

Redding, CA

Does anyone know which months to fertilize a Eureka lemon tree. Someone at our local nursery told us to do it in March, April, May, June, July, skip August and one last time in Sept. I'm not sure this is correct. I live in Redding.....No. CA

You can feed citrus at any regular intervals you want, actually. Like roses, they are heavy feeders and need regular water to prevent fruit drop. Feeding can be done monthly or quarterly, I wouldn't try semi-annually because citrus will exhaust soil very thoroughly if not fed enough. Use citrus fertilizer, and extra iron any time you see pale leaves.

i have a semi-dwarf Meyers lemon that I fertilize once a year if I remember. It seems to do well. It could be that we have good loamy soil. But in any case, I cannot imagine anything that needs to be fertilized 6 times a year. Are those recommendations for container grown plants?? Here is a photo that I took today - lots of ready to pick ones, and with the second flush of blooms it had later on in the year, there are green ones that will ripen a few months later. In addition to the two flushes, I get a few here and there all year round.

soilsandup,
We don't have nice loamy soil here. We have dust and decomposed granite and lots of rocks, which is why I've been working on amending the soil around here for the last twenty years. I'm still not done. Sigh!
We do need to fertilize quarterly for a good crop of citrus, here. Of course, lately they've just been getting water. Poor babies.
Yours look really happy.

Thanks for all your replies. We had a major freeze here for several days and our lemon tree took a beating. I went to the nursery and sat down with one of the staff, and she put me on a program for our lemon tree, lawn, etc. She said in Jan. or Feb. to feed Micro Nutrients to the Lemon Tree, Then to fertilize it three more times during the year with a citrus fertilizer, and always at the drip line.

Both my citrus trees are currently in containers so my experience probably doesn't apply to the original question, but for those interested in containerized citrus, I've found that fertilization on a monthly basis has done wonders for my citrus.

Caveat - I don't know if this is the preferred method or not, but my monthly fertilization is just during March through October.

My Meyers are in the ground. I fertilize regularly because two of the three are in mixed beds and citrus do NOT like competition. I prefer to feed often but not too heavily, as my trees bear almost year-round now and you can always tell by the new growth whether they need feeding or not. Meyers are easy plants to "read."
