Weird Weather of '09 #14 Baby it's Cold Outside....

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Julie and Sharon - so sorry about your water woes!! I'm ready to be over this, too.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Katie I took no offense at all, just wanted to make sure that Summer didn't think I am helpless. I'm just lazy! I'm quite self-sufficient but sometimes I get tired of doing it all myself. Especially when my fingers freeze!

Stay warm all, and I hope your water and pipe problems are resolved.

Thanks Kathy, but having been here for almost 14 years, we are used to dealing with water issues at least somewhere each year. No matter how much prevention you do, with five houses (fortunately only four this winter as my brother's rental was torn down so that they can build next spring), four well heads/pumphouses, two irrigation systems, and a partridge in a pear tree on our "family commune", SOMETHING is going to need repair every year. I guess it's easy for me to say as I was at work while Don and Mom were out in the cold dealing with it, but at least we can fix it ourselves rather than having to call a plumber (yes, even I can repair a broken water line if I have to....which I have in my sprinkler system several times over the last several years for one reason or another.) It's all part of the whole "living in the country" thing! Keeps you on your toes.....

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Judi, Nothing wrong with liking warm fingers! I didn't go out to check the water in my greenhouses tonight because I just didn't want to deal with it tonight if there is a problem. Tomorrow's another (hopefully warmer) day!

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Guys aren't always the solution...LOL....if I waited for DH to go out and cover the faucets....he doesn't think it gets cold enough for long enough to have to worry about it....and He is the one who was born here !! However, he IS warm most of the time.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Yeah, given my situation, there's really no help for it. It's all me. And I would just rather deal with it earlier than later. Nothing worse than trying to resolve a crisis when it's dark AND cold. Frankly, I hate crises even when it's not dark and cold. LOL

:-)

We here in -25 F areas have fawcets that go 2' into our houses to stay warm and no freezes there, its the "I forgot to do" places that wreak havock not now but when it warms up. Look out then! You may regret you prayed for 40's when the plumber bill hits you on Jan 2nd 30 days from now.
I have had a fire going all day next to my computer and been in PJ's short of the well freeze this morning. Now I am listening to Peter Kater "Essence" the most beautiful mix of Cello, piano, and native flute. One hour and fifteen minutes long. Off to the fire to lay down and look at the glow of the coals before bed.

I seriously like that firewood/kindling holder.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Yeah it is kind of a McGiver type of rack that I added the brown box on top. I have fire starter egg cartons in the brown thing on top and matches. Kindling is in the brown box on the left. I took off the dumb shovel, and other tools cause I don't need them with my fire place.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Dang, the water is frozen in my GH. It's heated, but apparently, not warm enough.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

We are at 11* right now, they are saying 4* by morning:(
Think I am going to go find my nice warm quilts...the dog and cat think it is time...

Have a good night everyone.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Oh gosh, that's awful. Holding steady here at 27, promised 41 degrees tomorrow.

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

12. 12!

*shiver*

*whine*

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Poor girl. That is really miserable. Very unusual for this area, right? (I hope.) It's holding steady at 24 here.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Yep was 12 last night and supposed to get to 26 today. Tonight will be another one at 12 degrees. It's 19 now but the sun is streaming in my living room windows. So deceptive!

Lynn so sorry about your GH water. Not fun.

Trisha LOL about your DH - now that you mention it, when I was married I still had to do everything anyway! 4 degrees!!!!! Crazy. I wonder if Redchic is frozen into a little block of ice. I wish we could hear from her.

Summer, why are you awake at 4am??? For me it's all about trazodone.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Ten a.m. and it has warmed up to 11* !! I want my forties and rain back....I hate being cold!!!

Do miss Shelly here...

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

I am so with you guys. You can probably hear me whining.

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Lynn, you have my sympathy with the frozen greenhouse water! Bummer when you finally were able to get the water out there. Hope it thaws with no ill effects.

My outdoor thermometer crapped out a few weeks ago, and I think I am glad! I don't want to know how cold it really is, I just know it's miserable. Had to chisel my greenhouse doors open this am, but although you could see your breath, the heater has kept it right above freezing. Hooray!

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Judi, I'm generally a night owl & in a particularly bad cycle of staying up right now. I go through my share of Trazodone, but some nights even 50mg doesn't cut it.

While I hate to accept limitations (like, are my flat-stomach days behind me?), I have come to realize that insomnia will always stalk me, there is no bright future ahead where I sleep like other people.

It's 36 degrees here. WHERE IS MY WATER?!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Here's something to think about during those long dark nights. Somewhere recently I read that way back when, peasant time-ish (and some "primitive" tribes still today) have as their natural sleep pattern that they go to bed, sleep for a couple of hours, then wake, reflect, think, whatever, for a few hours and then return to sleep again for another few hours. Apparently, there are old references referring to "first sleep" and "second sleep". Wherever I read this was saying that sleeping through the night in one long session might not be our innate natural pattern.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I, too, have heard references to first sleep and second sleep, Sue.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Gotta love Wikipedia

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

I'm always happier sleeping in shorter shifts several times per day/night, but I try to conform to the "normal" standard most of the time. Doesn't always work out...

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

This is aggravating. Just emerged from the crawl space -- by "crawl" they mean on yer belly, and I dang near dislocated a shoulder squeezing through the opening, how does a full-grown man do that? -- and everything is nicely wrapped & toasty down there. So the freeze-up must be between the street & the house. Totally out of my control, apparently, and it seems hit or miss who's without water & who's not. I suspect that, because my yard is in total shade this time of year thanks to the hill across, a thaw is not in my immediate future.

(Judi)Portland, OR

Susybell that is so interesting. I have never heard of that. Thanks for sharing. :)

Summer so sorry about your water woes. Hopefully it will soon get warm enough to let the water flow. Shouldn't the water company check it out to prevent some major line bursting?

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

It's a tiny, 70-house private water system run by hillbillies. At least I got 3 months' service free because they just got around to setting up my billing.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

The problem with 1st & 2nd sleep is that by the time you have gotten at LEAST 8 hours (and I need 9), you have been in bed for 10-12 hours.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

OK, it's above freezing & going to stay there, but nothing seems to be thawing. The water HAS to return someday, doesn't it?

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

One would hope so....we are up to 31* here.....Just finished running to the store for my 97 year old neighbor and I am frozen. She has to get her baking finished and she is out of cherries.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

LOL, she must be quite the lady. I will be very happy when it finally warns up, but I am wishing for it to skip directly to rain and forget the white stuff.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I was shocked to find out how old she is... My mother just bought a car from her son (He works at the Toyota Dealer) and he is 74!!

I'm ready to skip the White also....
I lost my 17 year old Cockatiel last night and the ground is so frozen I can't bury the poor thing until it thaws.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Oh, I'm so sorry you also have to go through that. I once had some dead goldfish in my freezer for 4 months during the winter before I remembered they were there and buried them.

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

Oh, geez... I'm sorry, Trisha. :(

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Trisha - I'm so sorry for your loss.

Eugene, OR

So sorry about your cockatiel Trisha!

Supposed to be 17 here tonight, wish we were above freezing. I'm sick of this, starting to sound like my DH.....grumpy in the cold. He's actually dealing better than I am. But then he can't go out in it because of his heart. So he's warm in the house all the time. I went out to fill the bird feeders today and put out some suet cakes. I hope the birds can eat them, they're frozen! By the time I came in my fingers were so numb I couldn't feel them. Still have the visitor in the garage, it shows up about dark, gone as soon as it starts to warm up (well when the sun is out).

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Thank all....17 years was a long time.

They say we are going to be warmer here tonight than we were last night...it is only going to get down to 12* .... may have to find my shorts and flip flops!!

Eugene, OR

ROFLOL My sis has a macaw, an African grey and a another I can't think of what kind. I know how involved you can get with those birds. Like having kids that never grow up. It was so funny to hear them talk to her on the phone when she came to visit. She had to talk to them or they would misbehave for her DH.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I love the story told about one of the officers at the Memorial here on Tuesday about going to look for a suspect. They knocked and someone said Hello come in. They asked him to come out. He kept saying Hello, Come in. When they finally entered, it was a parrot.

A guy that used to work on my car got an African Gray from someone. Every time his cat came in the bird would yell " Get the D*@# Cat away from the cage!

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Trisha, So sorry about the loss of your dear bird.

(Trisha) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Thanks Lynn.
