Jill,
The Frederick County, Maryland Master Gardener's Annual Plant Sale is April 24th from 8-12 a.m. It is held at the Extension Office at 330 Montevue Lane, Frederick, MD 21702.
Upcoming Events in the Mid-Atlantic
Thanks!
Jill,
The Morgan County, WV Master Gardeners sponsored Annual Plant Fair is held Friday, May 7th, 9am to 6pm and Saturday, May 8th, 9am to 4pm in the little Berkley Springs State Park in “downtown” Berkley Springs, WV. This plant sale is large and fills much of the open area in the little park, with at least a couple dozen vendors in addition to the Master Gardeners sales area. Prices vary from good to great and there is a wide selection plants: annuals, perennials, ferns, shrubs, natives, etc. Unfortunately I could not find a link giving more than the dates, times and location. It has been an excellent sale in past years. i.e. I've purchased really healthy, full, 10-12" tall azaleas for $5.
Thanks! I've added it to our growing list.
Don't forget, if you're planning to go to events around here.. start a thread, and maybe you'll be able to meet up with other DGers there. I'll try to catch any forum threads and link them to the events list, but I'd appreciate a nudge if I miss adding a link.
:-)
I added the dates from Critters post to the calendar I started in the NE... figured some of us live close enough to do either swaps or events
http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=jjt5jf00rom6k0u5bd6e9djrsg@group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America/New_York
you can start your own google calendar and import the dates you like from this one... to your own
Thank you very much!!
no problem... hope someone makes use of it
:)
Jill,
is there some way to get DG Admin to create a "sticky" calender of events that you (or some other designated person) could update on an on-going basis? More like a bulletin board than a thread, not for discussion but a listing kept at the top of the forum, like your second post in this thread.
all you would have to ask admin to make it a sticky
Yes, making this thread a "sticky" should work fine for that purpose. I can drop admin a line to see what they think.
I appreciate that people have limited discussion on this thread, but there are still useful details posted here that would be lost if we went to a different format (plus, I don't think there's a way to post a calendar or bulletin board in that way, but stickying a thread is straightforward).
When the thread gets too long, we can just sticky a new on in its place... and as you suggested, perhaps people could take turns offering to manage the Events list.
Rawlings Conservatory's annual Chrysanthemum Display started Oct 31st and runs through Nov 21st. Located in Druid Hill Park just off i83. It's a great, little show, and friendly to seniors and disabled. Lots of benches and places to sit and rest a bit. Enjoy. Ric

Don't forget Longwood. Their display began Sept 6th and also runs thru Nov 21st. You can check them out here. Ric

Thanks, Ric!
Anybody else have regional events to add to our fall/winter list?
Trying to talk my friend into going to Longwood next week.
Thanks for the ideas!
Here's another fun event coming up soon - like this weekend! I haven't attended, but my next door neighbors went last year, loved it, and are planning to go again. We have visited the Cider Works on the premises, and enjoyed it very much.
I think it would be a great outing on a nice autumn day:

The Holiday display at Rawlings is Dec 11th- 2010-January 2, 2011, Monday through Sunday. Ric
I am looking forward to visiting Hortulus Farm, a hundred acre, 18th Century farmstead and nursery operation, situated amidst the beautiful, rolling hills of historic Bucks County, PA and a member of the Greater Philadelphia Gardens Cooperative. Created and owned by world-famous garden and event designer Renny Reynolds and noted garden writer and author Jack Staub, Hortulus Farm has been called both "a garden of world-class charm" and "one of Pennsylvania's secret treasures". In 2000, the Hortulus Farm Foundation was created to insure that this distinguished property will continue to exist as a public garden and horticultural study center in perpetuity. The gardens and museum at Hortulus Farm are open for tours from May to October.
I am anxious to see what plants I can find in their nursery.

MARY
Hi Mary, Thanks for posting this. That is not too far from me either. I have never heard of it.
Have you ever been to Fordhook Farm near Doylestown? They are only open for certain events, but it is very beautiful. I believe it was the original home of W. Atlee Burpee.
Suzie ... I only learned about Hortulus Farm this fall. I have never been there .... maybe we can arrange to go there on the same day.
I never heard of Fordhook Farm .... need to check that out.
Have you ever been to Pennsbury Manor (former estate of William Penn) ... best tour I have ever experience .... if you put a visit there on your agenda, let me know ... I would enjoy going again ... it is very close to me .... but a challenge to find ...esp if you use a GPS or any internet map directions ... all their directions involve roads with detours that do not get you there .... but if you call them ... they will strive to give you directions that will get you there.
MARY
Sounds like a great place to visit...def on my list...thanks for the link
I was thinking that too....I'd love to go to Pennsbury.
It has been several years since I went to Pennsbury, but it was beautiful. I agree, a challenge to get to though.
I see I need to catch up and get the first post updated! I also need to finalize our date for the midwinter seed swap in Frederick and start a thread... probably Feb. 19, or maybe Feb. 27. Next year I'll try to be ready the first week in Feb, but this year that wasn't quite happening. :-)
Jill, Susie just alerted me to this event: 9th Annual New Jersey Flower & Garden Show
February 17 to 20
http://macevents.com/show.cfm/eventID/121
my advice if you are going to that show... go early... when Michele and I were leaving last year... there was miles of traffic going in there
Jill, if you can get a date for the Swap at Chef Lins, I will volunteer to be your money collector again.
And I'll bring a couple door prizes. Dunno if I have any plants to swap but I do have seeds & that should work!!! Becky, your caudex plants you gave me last year are doing great!! I have a little section of bench just for them: "Caudex City." LOLOLOL. Will have to take pix when they wake up. Thanks again. Looking forward to this swap. It helps me get closer to Spring.
Thanks! I'm getting the first post on this thread updated (Philly Flower Show is on the horizon also), and I'm getting ready to post a thread for the seed swap. :-)
Here is something to add to the list.
Plant sale by Mount Laurel Garden Club at the Mt Laurel library, Sat April 30, 9am-noon. Plants are very cheap and go very fast. Mostly perennials, some coleus and a few annuals. Rain or Shine.
- Proceeds go towards college scholarship for local HS Senior.

I realize that this is not particularly convenient in time or location for most (myself included), but The Potomac Valley Audubon Society and the (US Fish & Wildlife) National Conservation Training Center are co-sponsoring a presentation about the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug at 7:00 PM the evening of Wednesday, February 9.
"Admission is free and anyone is welcome to attend.
The presenter will be Dr. Tracy Leskey, entomologist at the U.S. Department of
Agriculture's Appalachian Fruit Research Station in Kearneysville.
Dr. Leskey and her colleagues at the Research Station are in the forefront of
research into the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, and she co-chairs a special USDA
working group that is trying to find ways to respond to the problems the insect
poses."
The HCTC is about 5 miles outside of Sheperdstown, WV
See http://training.fws.gov/meet/gettinghere.html for directions.
Wish they were having something like that in our area. Yuck Stinkbugs, still have them in the house.
I just found one in the house last week Holly... was hanging out on my houseplants... caught it in a cup and tossed him out in the cold
I sucked some up in a shop vac. Do you think they'll find their way out?
hopefully not.. LOL
Special presentations at the Loudon Extension Service!
(copied from Dmail -- thanks!)
Thursday, March 3, 7:00 p.m. Find out how you can encourage bees in your landscape, and learn about the natural history and diversity of native bees and their contributions to wild plants, agriculture and back yard gardens during this special presentation by T'ai Roulston. This program is being offered by and being held at the Loudoun Extension Office, Leesburg.
"Bringing Nature Home" by Doug Tallamy
Tuesday, March 22, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. (Ida Lee Park, downstairs meeting room). Gardening in our crowded world carries both moral and ecological responsibilities that we can no longer ignore. Because our gardens and managed landscapes are part of the world that sustains humans and the life around us, we must give thoughtful consideration to what we plant in our gardens and how these choices impact the environment. We can no longer view plants only as ornaments but must consider all of their roles and their intricate relationships with animals and insects. Tallamy will discuss the importance of native plants in our landscapes, emphasize the benefits of designing gardens with these roles in mind, and explore the consequences of failing to do so. Don't miss this opportunity to hear this inspiring and enlightening message in person! This free program is sponsored by Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy. Questions: contact Laura McGranaghan at lmcgranaghan@loudounwildlife.org.
Just to let everyone know that you can find info about the plant swap that I will be hosting at my home in Mount Bethel, PA.

Hope to see everyone from last year and lots of new faces.
Regards
Teri

Hooray! Looks like we've got two plant swaps underway for spring, which will be really good for our more northern & our more southern members being able to make it to one or the other. (The VA swap doesn't have a thread posted yet; I'll add a link above when it does.)
Don't forget the world class Cherry Blossom Festival, March 26 to April something
http://www.nationalcherryblossomfestival.org/about/
I went once, about six years ago and poorly planned. Others here may have better tips on which Metro stations are good, or which days or times.
Not this month, but-----save the date....
The Rawlings Conservatory's "SPRING SHOW" will
run from April 16th-May 1st.
