help for youth gardens

Longview, TX

I wonder if anyone would be interested in helping with seed, or cuttings for our church youth? I am a Master Gardener and have offered to help our church put together a youth program to get kids involved. This would be for fellowship, learn a new hobby, taking pride in our church, a place to pray, draw, and paint. The church is strapped for cash now. So any help would be great. I thought we would start out doing a biblical garden, moon garden, butterfly etc... I would also like wildflowers and native plants. Anything anyone could send would be great. I talked to the youth directors and they love the idea. We have virtually no landscaping here and it needs help. I may even volunteer to teach a Jr Master Gardener class if they are still into it by then! Thanks for any help. Email me if you can send something. I will send my address. I guess we have about 40 youth or so in church. The only thing we dont need is PINE TREES....lol....Thanks!!!

Thanks so much JCF, and Baa....
I plan to take before, during, and after pictures of the gardens in progress. I am so excited that you are investing in the youth. May God bless you both for your generosity.

I've got mucho Moonvine seed, as well as luffa (which would be great fun for the kids since they can actually harvest them and use them for sponges, etc), gourd seeds, and many many veggie seeds. (YOu can include some veggie plants in the flower beds and do "edible landscaping". Use eggplant, alliums, okra, even squash has a pretty blossom and the big leaves fill in the spaces well.) So give me a holler too!

I do not have outdoor plants to donate, but I do have a suggestion after reading Horseshoe's idea...

Plant a real, vegetable, edible garden in the springtime and donate the produce to elderly folks who can't garden, but enjoy fresh veggies? Or plant a "vase garden" full of flowers that can be cut and shared in nursing homes. That way the youth will not only learn how to garden, but how to help others.

Excellent point Angelsong. There is also a program called "Plant a row for the Hungry" where people designate a row in their gardens and give the goods to food shelters, the homeless, soup kitchens and such. Man oh man, Kelly, you're gonna have a GREAT program going on over there! So many choices!

Im so excited by your input. Yes, I have thought about having a veggie garden after we get the flowers started. I want to see how the volunteers hold up though. I cant possibly do this myself. (Im on disability for a heart condition) But, as long as they remain interested, and any adults get excited....I will be adding a veggie garden. Last night I walked all the property and I see a lovely place for a (veggie) garden. The only problem is access to WATER from there....whew. The cut flowers is a great idea. This could go to shut ins, nursing homes, and sick folks at the hospitals...what great input!! Yes, this is so exciting. I hope the kids are half as excited!! hehehe.....

Jennifer...the younger kids go to the nursing home about once a month. This would be so cool to let them bring a few flowers now and then too. The only problem is getting enough for all the residents at once...so maybe we could do a bouquet for the tv room or something...and a small vase for the people bedridden. I can hardly wait....:-)

Hi Kelly, the seeds are on the way''Glad to help' Sis'

Kelly,
That's a great project you are working on there. I have lots of flower & veggie seeds that I didn't get planted that I would be more than glad to send. I'll also include some hosta. I know they are common ones, but mine seem to hold up good in a lot of afternoon sun, so should be ok in the shade in Texas. I'll send Albomarginata & Plantaginea. Send me your snailmail addy.
