Mine were only just a year and a couple months and the trunk of the plant was about a half inch and woody. Like a tree! I am also not in your somene and typically if they make 9 months as an annual then they are toast. Mine only went longer because they were in pots and I brought them indoors.
Peppers for 2010 - Whose in?
Mine are all woody. I found another "dead" one puting on some tiny growth at the base today. I pruned them back but they still have at least 8". Mine die back to an inch or less above the soil even in a mild winter. I don't know if it is their natural behavior like in the tropics or not. Maybe kelly or somebody from Southern CA could tell us what the do when there's no killer frost or cold.
Gymgirl even in my unheated GH the milk jugs would come in handy for a night time cloche. I bought a single heat mat but it doesn't work as well as my sunny window. I'm still feeling around for solutions because I simply can't have a dozen shelves and lights in the house.
I probably out to start those pepper seeds patty sent me....my green peppers have not germed yet though.
Peppers Peppers I love Peppers. I have chiltepin, jalapeno, bell, red bell, pimiento, and some kind of chili petin that looks more like a mini jalapeno. I am always looking for new peppers to grow. My wild birds love them also.
I direct seeded sweet peppers last year and not one grew! I ended up having to buy plants and only got one red pepper!
On March 20th I sowed some California Wonder seeds indoors under lights - so far they haven't sprouted. The tomato seeds in the next tray sprouted in three days.
I sowed more seeds yesterday just incase the others "go south"
HoneybeeNC,
I predict you'll see some tomato seedlings this Wednesday -- 11 days....LMK if I'm right, ok?
P.S. Is it warm in the room where you have the containers under the lights?
We are seeding all our peppers today. They will go in the garden the end of May.
About 15 kinds of Hot Peppers & Fat n' Sassy bells.
Hope your seeding them indoors! Yipes, isnt it too cold out your way. Im still gettign frost here and you are north of me.
We have a germination chamber in our basement. After a few weeks they will go into our heated greenhouse. Tomatoes & cole crops went out there today.
Tomorrow I will be planting peas & radish.
It's been very warm here. Even the canning companies are getting their peas planted. A good 10 days early.
Hard to believe 3 weeks ago the whole countryside here was covered with 2 feet of snow.
Bernie
Has anyone grown Holy Mole? It's a fairly large choclate colored banana pepper. I tried some last year and loved the flavor and very subtle heat. Ric
We are planting some for the first time this year.
Gymgirl - it's the sweet pepper seeds that are tardy. Another came up over night, so now there are two :)
The tomatoe seeds are sprouting very quickly.
The room temperature is the same as the rest of the house - 70F during the day, 65F at night. I suspect it's warmer on the plant stand because of the lights.
At 80° the broccoli and cabbage seeds came up in 2 to 3 days. The tomato seeds came up in 3 to 4 days and the pepper seeds are taking 5 days for the first one up.
Gads I wish I could be planting....er sowing..
We planted radish, lettuce & peas today. Earliest in years! Month ago I thought we would have snow cover until 4th of July!
Hi today was 72º, only 22º over average high.
Nicer tomorrow they say.
Yeah, Bernie, you are being blessed with warm weather. I am getting some, but also a LOT of rain so far. If the rain lets up, the warmth will be there.
I did notice some volunteer lettuce coming up so I plan to set out and also sow some pok choy, spinach, and lettuce this week. Sugar snap peas are growing and I want to make a later planting soon. Onions look good. I have some strawberries and aspargus to set out when it dries more...kinda wet in unamended areas.
It's supposed to get up to 85F today. Hopefully the soil will warm up over the next few days. My hubby is anxious to get things into the garden, but I've told him that we can still get a late frost!
A couple more peppers have appeared - YAY! I love sweet peppers in a stir fry, but refuse to pay the outrageous prices charged for them in the supermarket.
Well, guess im gonna try sowing some peppers...The GPS was 104 degrees today..
Peters and sweet green bells,
I sowed some seed for bells awhile back and I am still waiting for the germ... guess we will have no green pepper before its tiem.
Prepared some manure pots for them today....gotta top them off with some potting mix and get going.
I noticed I got tons of cherry maters sprouting in the baskets I did last season. Will have to transplant some. Just hope we dont frost and I lose them. They are outside already
Honeybee you have a nice jump on them!
I plan to start melon seeds on April 20th and April 26th.
I poked peters in a pot today....only got afew seed so hope something peters out!
Here in north Florida we have a variety of pepper called the Datil. The datil pepper in unique because it is extremely hot, similar to a habanero, but also sweet and fruity. Most are produced around St. Augustine, Florida. The Minorcans brought them here in the 1770s. It is a required ingredient in chicken pilau and certain local chowders.
Fun to grow and a piece of history.
No germ yet on any of my recent sown.
I have more peppers (Green bells) in the GPS,but so far no germ.
We are having sunny days, and frosty nights.... could use RAIN.
Another pepper article, with a bonus.. melons!

New hot pepper and sweet melon for a tasty garden
Author: Debra Levey Larson
There is something sweet and something hot for your garden — a new melon and a pepper from All America Selections, said Greg Stack, University of Illinois Extension horticulture specialist.
I set my last transplanted sweet peppers today. Now I'm keeping my fingers crosssed that we don't get a late freeze because I have no back-ups left.
My son transplanted 200 plants into pots today. Still a lot to do.
They won't go into the field until end of May. That is safe time for tender plants here. Also to cold for them to grow good outside.
Just transplanted my 2 peters...hope they make it.. they are all I have!
Spoke to soon, one died.. shucks..
Butr got some green bells in from Leo, they are nice!
Well, it's a week later, and the sweet peppers are still alive. Most have a few holes, or chewed areas in the leaves, but that's par for the course! There should be no more freezing temperatures until Oct/Nov.
I've seen the birds pecking at the ground all over the garden - GO BIRDIES!
Nice!
I had really bad germination with the California Wonder pepper seeds this year, although better than last year when none sprouted! Thankfully the ones that did sprout are growing well in the garden. So far none have died, and we should be frost-free until Oct/Nov.
