We all need down time Karen. Especially after the excitement of a holiday. We need to process all that stuff that happened... Was Uncle Joe really wearing a toupee?..Who was that woman with cousin Larry and what happened to his wife?.....lol
Indoor Blooms & things that get you through the winter.
LOL!
Nice thread, Pixie! I can't believe you have so many pretties in bloom IN your house! All very lovely, as are Marilyn's! My 15-year-old Christmas cactus that I left hanging in my grapefruit tree didn't make it through the summer. sniff.
I just went out earlier this afternoon and took this shot of my Painted Lady hibiscus blooms from this morning.
Those are lovely Louise!!
Nothing blooming here now.
January will bring on my Cymbideum
DD has a vanda thats about to bloom 2 buds showing.
Take pics, Jo Ann!
You can count on it.
Its DD's orchid. I dont have luck with them.
We broght it with us to the new house.
The only space for the Cymbideum is in my Livingroom window.
Last year it put out 1 shoot(as it did the year before) and a cascade of fantastic blooms.
DD' said she never does anything to it, just puts it outside for the summer and brings it in when nights get cold( Oct. this year)
I wanted more than 1 bloom spike on the overgrown lout so I fed it and watered it all year as per Boojum. I am hoping for tons of blooms.
The anticipation will keep me going until end of Dec.
Painting of the plant in livingroom first year we moved here.
ut oh.. Pixie the ones you sent me... just looked at them.. they woke up in the box.. OOPS.. going to get them in soil today.. they have big buds on them
Ooooh---like the painting and the orchid! I haven't tried Cymbideums yet so yer one step ahead of me! LOL! Most of my phals are in spike though!
Not to pirate here but craft projects and painting keep me from depression.
I have been fusing grocery bags and all things plastic to make cone trees and bags for small gifts.
I modified the cone trees to make Hose Guides, at this time the guides were rebar pounded into the ground. They are ugly if not dangerous so I made covers for them.
You didn't pirate! Your post exactly 'illustrates' (pun intended! LOL) the theme of this thread. What a wonderful idea! Also a great way to brighten the dreary winter landscape. Great idea!
Not pirating at all ge! Like Phoebe said.....it's the theme of this thread, what keeps you from going over the edge during the winter months. Great idea by the way!!!
It's OK Allison, I know how sick you were and the bulbs are very forgiving like that. The would of tried blooming in the box but will love the soil you provide. LOL
Very pretty painting JoAnne. Your idea of covering the rebar is very resourceful and practical, but most of all looks a lot nicer than old rebar. Great idea.
My windows are not good for house plants, wide overhang, and also two cats that live under the impression that all growing plants are probably for them to nibble, rub up against or sleep on so I do not have plants inside any more.
I'm afraid my main way of getting through the winter is planning new gardens and what to move, replace and oh yes buy. The buying part is really dangerous, so I try to wait for the snow to fall at least to start in making orders, make list after list, change my mind a zillion times, justify an outlay of money by not doing much else to spend money on. I have a feeling I am soooo not alone in this method of winter avoidance. :)
I am buying a lot of new cameras (DSLRs) in my mind right now, so you really are not alone!!!! Wasting lots of time on research. I haven't bought a thing!
No buying for me right now I am patiently waiting for mizerable weather to plan my containers.
I saw someones garden the other day.I cant remember the postee or the thread.
Her garden was filled with the most intense blue larkspur and yellow flowers, looked like galliardas .
I am taking advantage of this beautiful sunny day to look at the garden to see where I can put some.
EVERYBODY
Dont take anything I say about orchids as gospil, I was so far off on the other orchid we have about to bloom, its not funny.
DD says its Phaleonopsis.
Just buds now.She bought the plant in bloom last summer.Couple were selling 50 in their front yard.Pais $15.00 I think.
PS Boojum
I would kill for your pink orchid. Its dreamie
I fell for it online and spent lots of shipping from CA. It was worth every penny!!
I love yellow and blue together too. Did you see my yellow lupine and dark row of siberian iris behind in the photo contest? I often plant these colors together.
I love that pink orchid, boojum! I think you should periodically post it for us throughout the winter! LOL! (seriously!)
I wish I could find the larkspur pic.
OMG I found it

Pixie your indoor blooms are fabulouso! : ) I love that picture of Larkspur and yellow daisy like flowers, very pretty!
I was peaking around and saw this thread and thought, "I wish I didn't kill all houseplants so I could have something to get me through winter." 'Sigh', So I had nothing to post. Well last night I went into my garage because I promised Dh I would clean it and looky what I found...
I had this plant outside in a part shade location for summer. I moved it into the garage when temps were threatening to get in the thirties. It was then basically neglected. It had practically no light except the little bit it got from the garage window, but never directly on the plant. I pretty much forgot to water it except maybe once or twice. I was trying to figure out what I was going to do with all the plants sitting in my garage being neglected and found this one with buds and a few spent flowers on it! I was pleasantly surprised and a little disapointed I had noticed a few days earlier so I could have brought it up for Thanksgiving.
I need more plants like this! I love things that will grow even though I completely neglect them! lol
You gave it the perfect condition for blooming with your loving neglect! Ha! Enjoy your flowers!
Oh Boo, thats one beautiful orchid, i'd pay to be able to see that in my home too! One of these days........
Meredith like phoebe said, it loved where you had it or it wouldn't of bloomed. I bought one last year for .50 cents in a 3" pot, it's not very big yet but I figured if I killed it, it wouldn't hurt so much as if I killed an orchid like Boojums. lol
I too love blue & yellow together.....it's the color of my kitchen!! LOL
Boo that is a gorgeous pink orchid and the color combo of the iris and lupin is one of my favs too. JoAnne your pic of a yellow and blue bed is really nice. I have a bed with that color scheme as well. It is only three years old but getting there and I want to expand it this spring if I can. Someone should start a fav color/plant combo thread so we can steal some great ideas.
Meredith you sure did do well by your cactus. They do love the neglect factor to make them bloom.Very pretty.
I love that photo boo!
We have these lovely locust trees in the parking lot where I work. Delicate little leaves and pretty spiral seed pods. They sprouted only a couple of days after I planted them, so it looks like I'm going to try bonsai.
Only about 7 more months until I can harvest fresh squash and green beans from the garden. sigh.
Dividedsky sounds like some yummy meals will be in order at your place this winter. You will have to keep us up to date on your little tree too.
Yes, nice selection of herbs!
Thanks!
Well, I don't have anything blooming outside except my Mums, and no cool inside bulbs blooming yet, and no shocking blue hibiscus like victorgardener.
But I do have some Kiwi Fern coleus cuttings rooting on my kitchen table and I stuck some Panicum 'Huron Solstice' seed heads in there along with a small branch of my Mum's that broke off.
ngam thats someone elses picture.
Boojum thats a beautiful lupine with the sibs.
So regal
Victor is that hydrangea in a protected spot to be still blooming? Such a shock of blue, nice. Mine have long since gone away.
Toofew at least it is something green and growing. More than I have now. I like the additions to make a pretty bouquet.
Me too, nice idea to make it into a bouquet.
Victor, you lucky dog! The color alone is a prize, but the color at this date is a miracle!!!!
Yes - the house shields it from the wind and it faces south. Lucky me!
JoAnn, that sure is creative, putting those covers on your rebar hose guides. I put tennis balls on top of mine. Looks weird, but I do it for safety reasons, in case I, or anyone else, happens to trip and fall and land on one. Will soften the blow. That pic of the larkspur and coreopsis is great!
Kathy, that's a gorgeous cymbidium. I can see why you like it so much.
Lately I've been making lists of daylilies I want to buy for this spring. Will probably pare that list down somewhat before I actually order.
Nice cactus, Meridith! That's a nice surprise to find that in bloom after so much neglect. I, too, like plants that can thrive on neglect, especially house plants.
Nice color on your hydrangea, Victor!
Karen
