Indoor Blooms & things that get you through the winter.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

The garden is going to sleep now so indoor blooms are what carries me through until spring. Feel free to post your indoor blooms here, and if your lucky enough to live in the South, please share what you have with us in the frozen tundra. ^_^

On Thanksgiving Day this is what was blooming at my house.........

My Thanksgiving Cactus opened on time.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes if it's what gets ya thru the winter! lol

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

well actually looking at the different branch structures is pretty cool - although i will not bore others with them :)

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Don't have any flowers - just a Wallingford recovering from too much Thanksgiving. He didn't even finish his breakfast! LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very nice, Celeste!

I don't have indoor plants, except for the tender ones I bring in for the winter. Maybe we can use this thread for any photos?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes, like I said, ANYTHING that gets you through the ho-hums of winter.

See, I used to ice skate, tobagon, ice fish, ect.. until an injury to my hip 15 years ago. At first I tried to still participate but always ended up going home early by myself, now I don't bother to go unless there is shelter w/heat. It's too painful and im not getting any younger. ^_^ So I started growing indoor bulbs and things to amuse me, i've had many failures and many beautiful blooms. The failures don't hurt my body like the cold does, and only gives a slight touch of humility along with the urge to try it again!!! LOL

Love all the indoor pretties, specially the cute furry one. Very nice indeed.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Celeste, you sure have a lot of very nice plants in bloom in your house now. I would love to get some of what you have for the house. I'm waiting to see if my 2 orchids will put up bloom scapes for me. I'm tempted to get another one. I need to transplant my 2 rex begonias to bigger pots and fertilize them. Also have a brugmansia in my bedroom that could use a bigger pot. My greatest success is the snake plant, a.k.a. mother-in-law's tongue plant. They thrive on neglect.

YC, your kitty is cute.

Thank you. I think he has a turkey hangover!

Our dogs got lots of treats yesterday, too.

Yank i'm glad Wallingford had a good thanksgiving. I see he's as handsome as ever. ^_^
Thanks Karen, Victor, Ngam, and D-Nut.

This one will look like this and have bright tiny blooms when it grows up. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/144312/

I luv the foliage. I have started looking for 'Mortimer' the AV. There is alot at the Coop so I popped in and I whispered to every AV 'Are you Mortimer?' but no response sigh.

Thomaston, CT

AVs are aloof! I, too, need something blooming in the house, so I hit the nursery today & bought 3 cyclamen---they were 3/$15, & this whopping pointsettia at Walmarts.....it was only $10...

Nice buys on those, Marilyn! Beauties!

How much light do cyclamen need?

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

I'm still hunting for Mortimer dnut--if he doesn't exist, we will make one! Seriously!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Phoebes I think Methusala had issues cuz it was the first time I brought a blooming plant (begonia) in. I don't think there IS a Mortimer. It's a ruse. Who KNEW unkillable AVs were this sensitive :O I SO admire you for having so many of them. It must be stressful.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

It appears there is no Mortimer. the standard AV data base of names does not list it. But I think it is a good name and we could make one, though it takes time and perseverance.
Robin, your Cyclamen are beautiful!
dnut--cyclanen can do ok in bright light, prolly better with a little sun, but they like very cool temps, and after blooming, go completely dormant. The leaves die back totally. Not sure how long they generally remain dormant before they start sending up new shoots. The flowers are worth the effort though.
Celeste, you are officially a 'gesneriphile' !!! :-O

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Ok dear Phoebes YOU know there is no 'Mortimer' and I know there is no 'Mortimer' but we shall have to pretend for poofy, rustlly Methusala. Sooooooo when I get back from my trip I will choose a luvly AV and we will just call it 'Mortimer'. I mean REALLY how smart is Methusala? ps. If you tell me she's really smart I'm going to get the heebiejeebies.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

wow love all the blooms Pixie & Robin

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Allison, I haven't planted all my amaryllis bulbs, only a few but those came up really quick. Took less than 8 weeks, maybe 5 or 6, planted 2 others at the same tme and they are only just now forming buds.
Robin those are great buys and im thinking I need to make a trip in town. ^_^
That Pointsettia is lovely, think it would look beautiful next to this one. I've been eyeing it but fear the plant will not look anything like the picture if I order it!!!
Of course the name 'Celestial' may have had a slight pull over me. ^_^

Also love this 'Candy Cane Cactus' but am thinking I don't want to pay that price! As d-nut so elegantly say's "Methinks I can concock this meself for less."

Phoebe, I'm a what? I can't be cause I can't pronounce it!!! LOL

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

Pixie: Any secrets to getting your cactus to open at a given time? My red Christmas cactus decided to bloom for Halloween, and my pink one at Thanksgiving. At least they had the holiday spirit.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes, my brother taught me to give it a light drink of Miracle Grow approx.2-3 weeks before I want it to bloom. Sometimes I use Miracle Grow Blossom Booster too, not full strength, again a light dose.

Guess I coined the term, as there is no such word in the dictionary--but you are definitely one of us now! LOL--There's no cure!

dnut--you can certainly name any noid ("no-id"--any violet w/o breeder's name, ie: identity) Mortimer, or we could hybridize a specific violet and officially name it 'Mortimer'. When is your trip?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

OK, I understand now! lol
My brother bought ma a lovely Gloxinia once, I did well and kept it for over a year before I killed it. ^_^ I loved it, just like having a big velvet plant.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Also, I believe the bud formation is in response to shorter days and decreased temps, so if you can provide your plant with an environment that prolongs the summer season, you can delay the blooms.

Great articles Phoebe! I'll save those to my folder, it explains why the one in the livingroom(morning sunlight only) does better than the one in the kitchen.

Thomaston, CT

I keep my cyclamens against the window glass in the east window...they do like it cool! And bright...and not overwatered. Pix, I loved that Celestial pointsettia...there's a plum one I like also, but because of the good price, I settled for plain pink this year---plus, we'll be traveling by the end of Dec.---hope the kids housesitting take care of my plants!

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Needed a green boost today. Went to the Nursery and they had their Poinsettas ready to go. They gave tours of the greenhouse where there were, they said over 120 different ones. It was truly beautiful. But I spied their stock coleus plants hanging in baskets and no, they wouldnt sell 'em. Dang.

They also had rows and rows of clearance plants, mostly DOA or very, very dormant. I wound up harvesting seeds (God forgive me) from lots of these.

They also had xmas trees ready. Beautiful. The little ones were in pots, blue spruce, and I was tempted cause then I could "release" it in my yard after xmas but I just don't have the space back there.

I wound up just buying fert for the Camllias, but I got my green fix.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I need a green fix. Maybe I'll head over to HD today or tomorrow. I don't feel like going out today. Been doing housework, going through stuff in my room and getting rid of junk, and watching TV. Feeling kinda lazy. Not even out of my pj's. LOL!
