Dee

Hamilton, OH

Good afternoon
I have spent yesterday & this morning, cleaning out the GH, the Brugs I had in there look pitiful, it got down to 28 degrees, I have had brugs get frost tipped before, & it didn't hurt them too bad, but these guys look sad, in about a week, I'll know if there is any real damage, the ones on the unheated back porch still look great
Elizabeth

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Hi Elizabeth, I sure hope they aren't permanently damaged! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you.
Dee

Hamilton, OH

Dee
I'll know in about a week, I trimmed all the leaves back, I might have too cut some of the tops off, but now they are all in the basement, so they should make a come back, How have you been, are you rested up?
Elizabeth

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

I think I finally am Elizabeth, I have taken naps everyday since all the company left...lol I think Charleen took off to get cuttings...
Dee

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Elizabeth..did you get your Christmas tree up? We are in the process of bringing out the outside decorations...Dee

Hamilton, OH

Dee
I thought I might get the tree up tonight, I was going to last night but I thought I was coming down with a cold, so I went to bed early last night, I took some caugh syrup, I feel bettter this afternoon, I hope Charlene gets her some doubles
Elizabeth

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

I'm glad that you are feeling better.I'm sure Charleen will try to Elizabeth.I don't think she had time to give any details..lol I know I wouldn't if someone called and said come get 'em...lol

Dee

Hamilton, OH

Dee
you're right, I would be there really quick, I would take a truck, maybe she can get some really big ones, I know she'll be happy with whatever she gets, it's really nice of that guy to offer them to her
Elizabeth

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

I hope she gets herself gobbs of big ones! Yes, it is nice of him. Sounds like she has made herself a local brug friend. I'm so happy for her.
Elizabeth, I have the seeds that you sent soaking, and I am planning on planting them tonight..You were sooo right...brug seedlings grow quickly.
Dee

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Elizabeth, when you grow seedlings, how of the same cross do you usually keep?
Dee

Hamilton, OH

Dee
I usually keep them all, I have some that I started this spring, not all that I planted germinated, I still have them, some are bigger than the other ones, How many do you have now?
Elizabeth

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

I kept the 12 strongest of the Jacayna x Daydreams. There were probably 20 of them before I transplanted. :o(
Dee

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Sure enough if I would have only planted 5 ..only one would have germinate....lol
Dee

Hamilton, OH

Dee
that sounds like really good crosses, when they bloom, the best blooms are the ones you keep, in the spring they grow so much faster than in winter, a couple of crosses that I had last year was about 9 inches tall & as big around as a pencil, they grew to be 3ft tall, but with seeds they usually bloom white the first year, then the second year, they should bloom with some color
Elizabeth

Hamilton, OH

Dee
that's how they do, some I thought didn't germinate I threw the pot of soil out, then they started growing, in the flower bed, some just seem to take forever esp. if you watch them all the time
Elizabeth

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Ok..Elizabeth..will keep and watch them for at least 2 years. They are gordo's( Liz ??) cross. I know people talk about how they are hard to germinate, sometimes.Maybe these did well, because they were very fresh. I'm not sure, but they weren't hard at all...I think I got very lucky the first try..lol
Dee

Hamilton, OH

Dee
you have did a great job with them, Liz sure knows what she's doing, she registered quite a few new ones this year
she has some amazing Brugs
Elizabeth

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

When you grow seeds from the same pod, they can still look different from each other, can't they? She was very generous. The auction was for 10 seeds. I keep watching for her to post more...even tho I'm getting tight on room..lol.I think I will have plenty of seedlings, with these and the seeds that you sent, but I just love working with seedlings ands watching them grow. I am pretty much just treating them like everything else that I have grown from seed..I bottom water, because I have lost stuff to damp off before I started doing it.

Dee

Hamilton, OH

Dee
the same seeds from the same pod can be different, I mist mine when they start to grow, that way I don't over water, do you peel the seeds before you plant them? I do, I let them soak for 24hrs, then I peel them, I like working with seeds also, it's fun to watch them grow, but since I don't heat the GH in winter, I wait till the end of Febuary, to do mine, the last 2 weeks of april I do heat it, that way I can start to get the plants out of the basement
Elizabeth

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

On the auction, Liz said those seeds didn't need peeled, because they were small, but I have begun to peel the ones that you sent...did one this morning, just to see how hard it was to do...It was easy to get off and find the seed. I put them to soak last night...wish Charleen would get back...lol
Dee

Hamilton, OH

Dee
I wish Charlene would get back also, it will be interesting to see what she got, it's soooo exciting when you just start
out with new plants, I am suppose to get a new one this week, it's a complete surprize though, I don't know which one I am getting
Elizabeth

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Oooh, that sounds like fun! I love surprises! Yes, it will be fun to find out what Charleen gets. I bet she is sooo excited.
I'm gonna get off here and fix supper Elizabeth. I'll be back on around 6...Talk to you then, I hope
Dee

Hamilton, OH

Dee
see you then
Elizabeth

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

so, everyone is planting brug seeds then?

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Probably me, I got a bunch today from a grower.
Not to metion a bunch of cuttings I got to do smething with. Mostly
singles. But, Lordy, they are beauties.
Got a Datura seed, Dee.
Got
Species
Insignia yellow
Insignia pink
Super nova
First bell
And a bunch of Brug seed too.
Butterfly bushes, red hot poker.
Believe that's it. They love me.
Charleen

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

No more seeds for me. If the seedling is no better than the parent plant, then it is best to compost it. No reason to add more plants that all look alike. I have grown soooo many and have found so few keepers and just do not have what it takes to go that road again. There is so many named beauties that will give you what you want every time.

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

I know that's right. He had some beautiful yellow or gold Plants. That insignia Gold is a beauty, but a single. If you see any you might like to try, let me know. I love to go over there. Those are nice people. He has some of his starts in glasses of rainwater, No peroxide in them he said and Roots. He has a lot of starts. The gold ones smell so heavenly. He still has a lot to cut down.
Charleen

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Sounds like you really made out, Charleen. That was so nice of him to call you.Butterfiles love Red hot Pokers..What color butterfly bushes did you get?
Dee

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Did you get some big brug cuttings, Charleen?
Dee

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

White and Pink butterfly bushes already have purple and Violet colors and the yellow one, plus my Cascading one.
Got some Purple Datura, didn't you want some of those , Dee? Gave me three red hot pokers. I got a lot of Misty pink> Didn't one of you want some Misty Pink? He had a little building just full of plant starts, in soil and water. It is amazing. He and his wife are the nicest people.
Charleen

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I just repotted my brug seedlings cherub x bergonian ( sp) I got the seeds from Phicks. My brug seedlings from brenda are all grown up and gone away to others.. I like to grow crosses..

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I can't grow red hot pokers, they die everytime..:p

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

I don't think it was me that wanted the datura, but it IS me that wants the Misty Pink!! My youngest daughter's name is Misty. Did you get any extra insignis yellow?
Dee

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Oh, yes. He would have give me the whole plant, had I wanted it. He kept saying "is that all?"
Then he went out and got me start of the Super Nova. I really wanted that one. He still has some blooming.
got seeds from a brug called SUNRAY, also starts. We had the back of our little HHR filled.
He gave me some Cofedrate Rose starts too, have to stripe leaves from them too.
Mr. George wants a Varigated Confederate Rose,so now I'm looking for that for him.
After all the plants he has given me. I feel I can do that for him.
Charleen

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Debra, that sounds like a great cross. I just love growing from seed...doesn't matter what it is...lol...keeps me sane..well, almost anyway.
Charleen, I can hardly wait to see your yard pics, next year.
Dee

Barnesville (Charle, GA(Zone 8b)

Charleen

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)
