Coffee Break #24 - One month to Christmas!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

me either.. I put together my sausage stuffing, a giggle fluff pie, and mashed potatoes last night.. the house smells good already

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

What is a giggle fluff pie? Inquiring minds want to know. LOL

Umm I can practically smell that sausage stuffing Allison it sounds so good!

My turkey has been brining for 24 hours and is ready for frying. Thanks for the help Allison.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

it's amazing how something so simple as that stuffing can make the house smell great... good luck with the turkey Jada... ours is ready to go as well!!

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

I'll let you know how it turned out. I don't think I've ever been this excited over a turkey .....not counting the ex :-)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Randy picked up this new monster size pot... the thing is huge.. we can lay the turkey down flat in the thing.. he was thinking the splashing will be easier to deal with if the cavity is not facing up.. lots of head room in this one.. we will see how it goes

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

I was looking for something larger too. I settled on a deep roasting pan. It still wasnt deep enough with the tip of the breast not submerged, so I had to turn it over at the 12 hour mark. Maybe by next year I'll have found something better.

I know your turkey will be perfect and everyone will be asking for seconds!

After I did mine I found this thread. It has lots of good info and apparently these folks have been using this brining technique here on DG since 2001.

hhmm pickling spice does sound good.. maybe I will try that for christmas

for the brine part I use a big ole cooler.. yeah so we have to clean it in the bathtub after.. but it does make life easy

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh and after this cup of coffee.. I am going non conventional.. going to make some fried apple pies.. just frying everything!!!

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

LOL! Fry away, fry away fry away :-)

I will definitely be a frying fool till Christmas to get the most out of this oil cause i dont want to store it.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh we have a pump with a filter on it.. sometimes HD carries these.. it helps if you do want to store it back in the container

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I will suggest if you are going to store it after use... fry up some potatoes... it clarifies the oil

Good morning all, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

is it time to eat yet????... morning Victor!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Still have last-minute cleaning to do!

We're also celebrating my older guy's birthday today. He turns 11 (how is that possible?!!) next week.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

a thanksgiving birthday must be cool... always a great party.. well I am off to make my pies.. enjoy all!!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

He's eleven?! Wow! Time flies we gotta get him and my DS (just turned 14) together for an afternoon. Maybe if we start by sitting them down to lecture about the botanical world in detail, they'll have something to talk about after... like how crazy we are!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

happy t-day all

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Victor, happy day for you and son, sometimes I wish I was thirty again with an 11 year old daughter, as it was, but then I think of the teenage years when I wondered if the will ever grow up to be good citizens, they eventually did becoming wonderful adults very caring for me and great parents for their children.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Just got back from a Happy Birthday Brunch for the 2 yr old granddaughter. She was so excited, then we talked to our oldest son in Oregon whose birthday is also today as well as a nephew. DIL's is tomorrow.

Happy Birthday next week to your oldest, Victor.

I, also, have never done or will do shopping on Black Friday. ICK!!!

Brined turkey is in the oven.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I can smell the turkeys cooking way over here YUM!

Thomaston, CT

I never want to see turkey again! Well, maybe tomorrow. We had a quiet day---only 6 of us, but my stepdaughter & her DH are coming over soon for part 2---and we had 6 for dinner last night, plus I watched my Gkids all day yesterday during my DS's surgery---he came through fine, but is in a lot of pain today, & stuck in bed. Happy Bday to your son, Victor. No black Friday for me, I hate to shop---everyone gets gift cards online, except for Gkids---they got winter coats from Beans. I forgot I scheduled my dale's haircut for tomorrow---have to be in the city by 9---rats!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

It is my brothers and my nieces birthdays today too. I sometimes get north for Canadian T-day, cause I never get enough turkey. We have just finished cooking two 18lbs ones. One smoked and one roasted. Now off to eat, way too much. Patti

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I SMELL MANY TURKEYS YUM! I bet you are all feasting and clinking glasses in thankfullness right about now. I'm eating chocolate and clinking with myself (which is a little messy when you are also trying to type) O JOY DH and I are now off for a refreshing beverage.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Happy Bird Day!

I plan on cutting back on relatives--I have way too many ;^)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

after all the cooking - and cooking way too much for 4 - i am stuffed and did not really eat that much - strange? - i am not going to have the traditional t-sandwich - layer of turkey, stuffing, gravy heated - well lets see how i feel in and hour!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

we had a real nice day.. all the food turned out pretty good.. except my cranberries.. they were really bitter this time.. something wasn't right.. I used my juicer to get the orange juice.. think the pith was the problem .. won't do that again

:(

good thing I always buy some canned for back up ... but the turkey was one of the best we have ever made.. monkey fist bread rocked.. stuffing was good.. can't complain.. believe it or not.. most of us were too stuffed for desert.. but I did try a bit of everything

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Everything was great here. Way too stuffed right now. Had too much wine too!

South Hamilton, MA

We always wait a bit for desert--easily stuffed especially since we (mainly me) have cut back on serving amount. Get easily stuffed at a restrant meal as well. Before dinner watched the Packers win, so all is right with the world.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

iris thx for reminding me - happy the cowboys scored more than 7 points this week! - and Paul was on tonight which was nice.

and how can anyone make a half of a turkey sandwich? ate a whole one - it was good and i need to digest and exercise - had too much wine here too.

East Bridgewater, MA

I've never heard of "monkey fist bread."

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

monkey fist bread

3 packages of buttermilk biscuit tubes (I buy the 4 pack and just use 3)
1 cup sugar (divided)
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar

Take 3 packages of buttermilk biscuit tubes (10 per roll) and cut each roll into 4 pieces. Drop roll pieces into 1 cup sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon. Drop sugar-coated pieces into a well buttered Bundt pan (don't squish roll pieces when placing them in the Bundt pan).
Put 1/2 cup of the left-over sugar/cinnamon mix and 1/2 cup packed brown sugar and 1 cup of butter (2 sticks) into a small saucepan.
Bring this mixture just to a boil; remove from heat immediately. Carefully drizzle over the roll pieces.
Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.

Thanks! I'll write it down and try it! Sounds yummy!

(Ummmm, anything with biscuits, brown sugar and cinammon has to be a crowd pleaser!)

(I think this is where Homer Simpson gets that euphoric expression on his face...)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

it is... it's my honey Randy's favorite too... and the leftovers make good breakfast .. well when there is some

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

OMG Monkey bread is sooo good!!

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Ditto! Yummm

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Mom's pies were great as usual! Apple, lemon meringue and chocolate pudding.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Lemon Meringue is my favorite pie. I need to learn how to make one cause store bought can be crappy.
