Interesting....thank you...I am suprised it is growing again too if that is the case, because it did get down to 35 a couple of weeks ago and we had a light frost. It was outside the whole time. Well I will baby it now, it has gone into the GH and will stay there. I will put it close to the heater so it will have the warmest spot. Or do you think it would do better in the house? What about light?
Amorphs unleashed
Being at a higher latitude your winter sun won't be that strong so I'd think at that time direct sun should be okay. Leaves up against glass should be avoided, insufficient air circulation would raise the temperature on the leaves pretty high. What you also need is higher humidity. That's where houses can be a problem. People usually live more comfortably in lower humidity, plants (tropicals) are the reverse. Greenhouses are normaly better from that pointr of view, but usually aren't kept as warm as a house.
My G/F in zone 5a leaves hers in ground on south side of house and they pop up every spring/summer.. I bring mine in and leave them be all winter in basement Garden..
Dormant underground they'd be insulated from cold anyway. But GAgirl's plant has started growing into winter. Will the leaf survive out in the open with zone 6b cold?
I don't think so, my sisters plant wilted at 40 in Arkansas, now it is yellow dried and going dormant, I told her to bring it in since it is now dormant and in a pot..
my konjaks and other amorph are still outside and okay. this is the first time that they have gone this long. it helped that i figured out that they need more shade in arizona. i will get them inside before the first freeze but they have weathered the 30s well.
Tropic, if the plant is hit by a hard frost in any zone the plant will defoliate but that does not mean they have lost the plant entirely. GAgirls zone is atleast 8b or a bit higher in which I do not believe she should have any problem with her konjac returning when the temperatures warm back up if she should choose to leave it outdoors as long as it is in a well draining "pot" and not placed in any area that might be subjected to abundant moisture for an extended period of time.
Like Debra stated, her friend grows them in the ground in zone 5 and if I remember correctly, a potted plant left outdoors via the cold months needs to be 1 zone warmer or 2 to be on the safe side.
I think I will keep mine in the GH for this winter and maybe plant it out in the spring.
that sounds like a good plan.
got my 2 konjac's today !!! YEA.. really nice bulbs..about 6" across..3" flower stalks on
both.. im guessing they weigh around 5+ lbs each..
very pleased..and anxious to get them to flower... :)
i take it in situation like mine..utah.. put them in a warmish area..unpotted up..
and some light? is that what you all recommend..???
no watering? only when flower is spent and stalk withered..pot up?
and then put in warmer area for leaf stalk to come on??
much thanks.. really pleased with this newest addition to my plant
addiction..LOL
VERY nice! They are blooming size it looks like! Congrats and ENJOY them!
I didn't read your whole post. DUH! Put them in a cool area for now just as they are. In late winter/ early spring they will start to grow. If it is a FLOWER stalk, no potting is required! They will bloom and stink OUT of the pot!
Rachel, I think you've missed the point I was making. GAgirl's tuber is just starting to grow as winter is coming. That means the tuber is shrinking/withering in producing a leaf. Will come the point when there's no tuber, just a leaf with roots. Then if the leaf freezes, there won't be a tuber, only a dead leaf.
Once the leaf has been growing for a while and begun to produce a new tuber then it's not so bad. At that stage the longer the leaf survives the larger the tuber it'll produce.
Debra's sister had her plant growing through the summer and it was at the end of its cycle when the leaf withered, so she had a new full sized tuber for the following season.
tropicalnut777, this is my first time growing A. konjac so I don't know specifically about them. A lot of people say they leave the tuber out and let it flower without being potted up. This year I was behind getting mine planted and my A. bulbifer put up a flower stalk while still in a box. I potted it because the tuber was starting to look withered, a bit dried out.
The flower opened up a few days later but it was smaller than last years. It makes me think it's better to have them potted with a little moisture to prevent stress. If the flower uses up all the tuber then there's nothing left for the leaf to grow from. That's what worried me, thinking the flower might be the last thing the tuber might do.
I'm still learning as I go, but try to be a bit cautious and anticipate possible problems. Tommy is the one for konjac. He's posted some great photos of his plants.
much thanks tommy and tropicbreeze..
ya..im anxious on trying out amorphs.. :)
ever since i saw a pic of titatium..i thought wow..thats a plant id
like to try..
so i think with konjac i have a better chance with a less needy amorph..
looking foward to yrs of growing with these..and im sure..eventually more..
amorphs.. :)
