And another page begins for our little birds
who are as tough as they are beautiful.
This will be the survival months for many especially
up in the northern area of the west coast.
This Anna says 'hello' to each and everyone of you.
WESTERN HUMMINGBIRDS VOL.8
Sweet pic dirt! Thanks for starting the new thread!
Handsome devil you have there Dirt!! I love all the feathery white.
Beautiful hummers guys!
duc, what a place to live. Hummingbirds and Bald Eagles from your deck. Beautiful shots.
Hi Dirt, your little one looks so cute in this last photo. The one on the cage wire looks like it's wondering when that rain will stop. I'm noticing you're getting more and more rain. We sure could use some of that-all we're getting today is drizzle and clouds.
I'm still seeing some very young hummers, like this one that is just starting to get coloring.
Oh that's too cute.
what fun.
Such wonderful pics guys!
Beautimongus pics al! Ok BIG question could I have a Eucalyptus tree in AZ or NM? Would it survive the brutal summer? Might I be grasping at straws? DRAT! It is mostly likely that I am delusional. Big surprise sigh.
dahlianut, eucalyptus trees are native to Australia. Many, many different species grow in areas from the desert to the coast to the alpine and more temperate regions. Perth summers are brutally hot and dry, although our winters are much more mild than those you experience in NM or AZ. California has so many eucalypts that Australians traveling there feel as if they're back home. Our "zones" don't exactly coincide with the ones from Canada and the USA, but I believe that Perth is roughly equivalent to zones 10 or 11. Mind you, as beautiful as most eucalypts are, they are not deciduous and shed leaves continuously all year round. Some species shed their bark at least once a year. No good if you're a neat freak. Also, some, but not all have highly volatile oils and can literally explode in a bushfire. Oh and some will respond to periods of drought by dropping large branches without warning. Saying all that and painting a bad picture, there are lots of small eucalypts that put on a beautiful display of blossoms and are easily managed within a suburban garden.
Margaret, I put a detailed map in his baggage
and specifically asked me not to write it out--
so I drew one. (Hope I didn't leave anything out)
If you see an Anna hummer flying around and it
goes past you could you tell it its going To Far South!
and maybe if you don't mind, furnish him with a bit of his favorite elixir
and somewhere to rest --(won't take up much room).
Thankyou.
Duc-- I am not sure when he will get there but you'll know-
he has some great Washington State apples and a bottle
of homemade 2005 raspberry wine that he willing to share.
Bon Voyage.
Dirt, you are so funny!!! I love the little guy with his suitcase all ready to go!! He looks awfully young so I do hope he knows the way. Hope he packed his longjohns because it's in the low 30's here at night and high 50s in the day. By the way, some of my little ones have disappeared too. I think they're headed to Arizona where it's warmer.
Dahlianut, Margaret gave a really good explanation of the trees. Also, I'm not sure they all bloom. This one doesn't shed its bark, but there sure is a giant mess on the ground from the dead blooms. This one is across my street. We do have freezing temps during the winter and our normal in the summer is around 95 or more.
Thanks for the excellent info MargaretK. I don't know yet whether we will be urban or rural as we are still looking for a place. I have added eucalyptus tree to my plant list ^_^
Thanks duc. Cross posted.
dirt, that is sooo funny.
I don't think its funny at all. He's heading south not north. I want the raspberry wine!
Margaret-- I hope he can't read because I mispelled Eucalyptus and he could be just
buzzing around looking for the other one. Oh Dear.
It take a long while Duc.
Dalia-- Think I could make you happy except one
slight problem.
Got me a volunteer, spitting image of the last guy,
must be kin--
the other fella left his woolly on the line--
lucky for you they are all Flames fans--
he says he can't bear seeing you so sad and will go up to the GWN
(great white north) and save you from your despair.
Here's the problem -- the other guy left with the
only magic bag around and we are puttin are heads
together in getting one of those on the shelf to you.
There's another problem-- he's a wee bit smarter than the
other fella.
Every thing will work out just fine.
and wishing happy holidays to us down here and
peace and love to, well , to everyone.
Gone till sometime next week and watch for those little jewels.
