I have an odd citrus tree that's not in the plant files and I would like to add it. I forgot to last year but right now I can get pictures of the developed fruit while still green and in a month or so I can put up pics of what it looks like ripe etc.
How do I post a new plant to the plant files?
Do you know what species and/or cultivar it is? I'd be more than happy to help you if you can give me that information.
It's called a Sanbokan grapefruit some times Sanbokan lemon. Citrus sulcata. What else do you need? It's orgins are some what a mystery as far as I know.
According to the International Plant Names Index (IPNI), Citrus sulcata is a synonym of Citrus grandis var. sulcata and is classified as a sour orange.
To create the entry, click on the 'Add a Plant' link below the tabs in the PlantFiles environment:
Common Name: Sour Orange
Family: Rutaceae
Genus: Citrus
Species: grandis var. sulcata
Once the entry is created, go back into it and scroll to the bottom where it says 'Edit this entry' and then you can add the synonym:
Synonym Genus 1: Citrus
Synonym Species 1: sulcata
Here's a site I found with some more information for the details: http://users.kymp.net/citruspages/souroranges.html#sulcata
Please let me know if I can help in anyway, and if you would rather, I can create the entry for you.
Here's another site, and indeed it also goes by the common name Sanbokan Grapefruit. Please feel free to add that common name also. http://www.woodlanders.net/index.cfm?fuseaction=plants.plantDetail&plant_id=1144
Oh no, I started the file and it's in the plant files I guess but when i search for it I can't get to it. I wrote exactly what you put in your post and was going back to edit it. Is there a time delay from when I put that in and when It will show up on a search?
I'm going through the pictures for the picture contest so I'm not in a hurry.
Good job! See, adding a plant isn't quite as daunting as it would seem, is it?
It shows up in the field by field search here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher[common]=&searcher[family]=&searcher[genus]=Citrus&searcher[species]=grandis+var.+sulcata&searcher[cultivar]=&searcher[hybridizer]=&searcher[grex]=&search_prefs[blank_cultivar]=&search_prefs[sort_by]=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search I added the synonym, as I'm not sure whether you are able to do that or if we have to.
Congratulations on your first plant added to PlantFiles!
There it is. You filled in a few things that I was trying to back to. BTW it does set vaible seeds and I believe it will come true from seed. I'll check on that.
Please do let me know what you find. It might set viable seeds, but they might not grow true to the parent. That's why I marked it as such, but it can easily be changed if we find that it does grow true to the parent.
How come a search by common name doesn't work?? I'm the one who posted it and I'm having a hard time finding it. My Latin not so good. I tried sour orange and that doesn't work and I tried sour orange, sanbokan grapefruit and that doesn't work. Is there a way to do it so it will show up if you search sanbokan? My intent was so people could find it under the common name.
To be honest with you, I don't like the generalized search, and really don't know what criteria it looks for when a search is launched. Hopefully Terry or Dave will pop in with the answer to that question.
As an example I also grow cara cara oranges. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/73505/ Those come up if I simply search for cara cara or if I search for navel orange it pops right up.
I actually have better luck searching with google to find Dave's garden plant files. LOL. If I can't seem to find it, I search with google and many times a DG entry will come up on the first page of the google search.
Using the general search for 'Sour Orange', finds every plant with the words Sour and/or Orange in the common name, resulting in 1229 different plants being.found.
There are two different searches available from the PlantFiles home page. The one you used is on the top line labelled Search Plants.
Two paragraphs down is another search labelled Click here to search for plants. This one gives you the chance to search on a variety of fields. It means you can search for the latin name, but it also includes a search on common name.
Enter Sour Orange in here and start the search and you find four different oranges, including your new one: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher[common]=Sour+Orange&searcher[family]=&searcher[genus]=&searcher[species]=&searcher[cultivar]=&searcher[hybridizer]=&searcher[grex]=&search_prefs[blank_cultivar]=&search_prefs[sort_by]=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search
Alternatively enter just Sabokan in the common name search and it finds just your orange: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher[common]=Sanbokan&searcher[family]=&searcher[genus]=&searcher[species]=&searcher[cultivar]=&searcher[hybridizer]=&searcher[grex]=&search_prefs[blank_cultivar]=&search_prefs[sort_by]=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search

Thanks one mystery solved today. I always use the general search unless I know the Latin name.
