Next year's photo contest dates - will include countdown

I gave some thought to how to handle the starting and closing dates for next year's contest. My desire is to be as clear as possible about the dates, without overwhelming the page with all kinds of timezones and other details.

What I'm going to do is have a countdown on the contest page. It will say exactly how many days, hours and minutes are left before the contest closes. This should completely eliminate any questions or confusion surrounding when the contest will close.

(Zone 1)

^_^ Thanks Dave ... don't see how anyone can be upset with that decision!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

That is a great idea!!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Little did you know you would have so many folks in so many places that you would have to get that specific....grin

Ain't success grand?

Oh, and thanks for having such a lovely, useful vision, Dave.

Pine City, MN(Zone 4a)

Brilliant, Dave!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Good idea, Dave. I would also suggest adding two things to the rules / instructions. One would be that the photographer's name should not appear. Second - something about photo size. They run from teeny thumbnails to so large one has to scroll way down to see it all.

Excellent idea, Dave!

I also agree with Victor.
Copyright and watermarks should not be in place on the photo also. Maybe they didn't know the contest is anonymous.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I noticed at least one that put their name in the remarks for the photo.

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

Great suggestion for next year's photo contest deadline, Dave. A countdown is GENIUS!!!! As always, you rock. ^_^

I've also wondered about the copyright/watermarks on many photos in the contest this year, as well as photographer's name in the remarks for photos. I thought they were supposed to be anonymous, too. Guess there's no screening before the voting opens to remove these (assuming they're not allowed)?

Is there anyway to provide a link to the previous years' winners so that people get an idea of what kinds of things go in each category? That way the newbies would have a better idea of what kinds of pictures to submit.

Previous contests are in the 'extras' tab at the top of the page.

Thanks for that head's up. I found it after scouring around some, but a newbie might not, so a link for them might be helpful.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Thanks Dave.

Cupertino, CA(Zone 9a)

I'm new here and I can't figure how you enter a contest, picture of the day etc... HELP!!!

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

The contest is closed for this year--it'll be back next year in the fall.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

"Bloom of the Day" is chosen from PlantFiles photos... so upload your favorite photos of your plants, and you may see some of them chosen to be featured... they'll also pop up in the "fun random" photos.

Cupertino, CA(Zone 9a)

Thank you :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I'll be on the lookout for your photos!

Oky doky SP????

Cupertino, CA(Zone 9a)

How do you enter a picture in the Plant Files?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Go to the PF entry for the plant (you can do a search by common and/or scientific name, cultivar, etc). Click the "Guides & Info" tab, click "PlantFiles," then click the green button "Click Here to Search for Plants."

At the bottom of the page, you'll see a box of links for "Your Actions." Options include "Upload an image of this plant."

Note that photos go through a review process, so it may be a day or two before you actually see your image included in the PF entry.

:-)

Cupertino, CA(Zone 9a)

Critter thank you :-)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Welcome to DG claudcat ^_^

WELCOME claudcat...does the cat part of your name mean cat?

If the cat part means anything special, that would be all "4" feet. ^_^

Dave, thanks for the countdown; lots easier!

Looking forward to your contributions to the PlantFiles, Claudcat!

Cupertino, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the welcome and the help!!!

Aunt, Yes it means cat...how about "16" feet...4 cats. YIKES!!!!! :)
