The photo contest is coming to a close. Tonight at midnight (UTC), the contest will automatically close and voting will then be enabled! To help you know this, midnight UTC is 7:00pm EST or 4:00pm PDT. So, if you're waiting until the last minute to upload your photos, this is your last chance.
Once the time comes, you'll be free to go into the contest area and begin the voting!

Photo contest: Vote early, and often :)
Woo Hoo ... can't wait to view all the gorgeous photo's that are in the contest this year. Because there are always so many great photo's, it's always hard to choose 1st, 2nd and 3rd favorites!
... and Dave, thanks for deciphering the UTC for me, I just couldn't figure it out LOL, so just figured I'd wait and see the notice for voting to begin!
Why did it close early? I was still entering photos when I got the notice to start judging?
Yes why did it close early?
me too. (i didn't realize until after 6 that midnight = 7pm, so it was my own fault.)
This notice is what I was using as my guide:
"At midnight UTC on November 2nd, 2009 (unix time 1257120000), the entries will be closed and voting will begin. Voting will be handled by the membership at large, and how to do that will be explained when voting begins."
It's still November 1.
Hey, on the information for the contest it said November 2nd. So, how come it is closed on the 1st? My parents went on it tonight to upload some pictures and couldn't understand this either.
In UTC it is Nov. 2. (I just looked up UTC, Universal Coordinated Time, and understood just enough to realize it is roughly the same as what we used to call Greenwich Mean Time.)
I think it would have been better if the corresponding times for each time zone had been listed somehow, because I have never heard of this before.
Ah, I messed up on that too.
I put my entries on a while ago. Didn't want to wait til the last minute and miss out.
Hack
I just returned from a trip out of town... spent my car travel time choosing and editing photos on my laptop... then returned to find that the contest had closed. :-(
I figured that "midnight" on November 2 meant that photos could be entered until 11:59 pm UTC on Monday, not that the contest would be closed at 12:01 am UTC.
I guess my photos will have to wait until next year. Bummer.
... but on the bright side, now I can finally go look at all the photos that have been submitted, and WOW!
:-)
I missed out too! Just got them all ready to post thinking the contest would be closed at midnight "NOV 2cnd " and come to find out it's allready closed, What a bummer!!
Voting is very tough again this year! Some really great photo's!
I was under the impression the contest entries were closed on the 2cnd of Nov. Today is the first of Nov. ???????????
It closed at midnight on 11/2 in UTC time. That time happens to be several hours ahead of any of the time zones in the US, so midnight UTC came and went already.
I get the UTC time zone thing, but I'm still confused...
UTC is 5 hours ahead of EST... Right now, it's 11:35 pm on November 1 EST, making it 4:35 am on November 1 UTC.
By the way I reckon "midnight," it's still more than 19 hours until midnight UTC on November 2. I would think the deadline would be at 7 pm EST tomorrow (Nov. 2).
But that's because I figure that if somebody says "midnight Friday" they mean the sunrise after that will be on Saturday, not Friday morning.
Ah, well, moot point. If the voting has started, the contest has closed.
Technically speaking, as the clock hits midnight, the day switches to the following day. At 11:59 UTC, it was still 11/1, but at midnight it becomes 11/2.
I see it the way critter sees it, It's confusing.
lol...2:20am is sleep time here...
How odd. Several photos I entered are not posted.
For all the confusion on the dates, I tried my best to be as precise as possible, even including the unixtime which is an absolute to the second time system.
The deadline was published from the beginning, and the deadline was given as 1257120000 unixtime. The current time is 1257172229.
I'm sorry for those of ya'll who missed it. Keep those photos for next year and don't wait until the last day. :-)
The easiest way to remember that midnight = the next day is think about New Years...on New Years Eve you count down the minutes & seconds until midnight, then at midnight it becomes Jan 1 of the next year and everyone pops the champagne, kisses loved ones, etc.
Silly me, I can't find the link to see the pic. Help?
Hap
ecrane, that doesn't help me... I consider the New Year's Eve ball drop to occur on midnight of December 31, not midnight of January 1.
I've got some family calendar projects in mind also for my photos, so my editing time won't go to waste. We'll see if they're still my favorite photos next year... :-)
Can't speak for anyone else but I entered mine some time ago and still didn't make it in.
The contest started on October 7th and ended At midnight on November 2nd. This was more than enough time to enter photos for the contest. The rules were precise and posted for all to see.
I also missed out posting some photos in the many categories that were offered in this years contest... I only have myself to blame!
dave
I don't understand 1257120000 and 1257172229.unixtime.
I had been in an accident a short while back and it's a little hard to use the keyboard, Plus been making trips back and forth to make up for lost time on projects since the accident ( Hubby driving) thats why I was doing the photos at the last minute thinking I still had time, Went through a lot of photos and when I went to post found out the contest entries were over. .... Oh Well, Lost out posting for lack of understanding, Won't ever do that again, Will leave all contest entries to people who understand " UnixTime"
GardenGuyKin, Thanks for the update, Though I pretty well know what noontime and midnight is.
I have another great site where I post photos all the time and the photos that didn't get to the contest here will be put there so they will be posted regardless and actually, I get a mega ton more views and responses on my other site so it works out well anyway, Was just dissapointed that I didn't make it on time for the photo contest here because of lack of understanding Unixtime as I did like to join in on the photo contest here on Daves.
GardenGuyKin, I was trying to post my photos on Nov 1rst, Today is Nov, 2cnd ( .....Till midnight) I'm sure for most people, There was plenty of time to post, I had been in a recent accident, And have been struggling to catch up with all my normal daily activitys and things I had going on, But, Still wanted to join in the contest, Was just too late to do so.
GardenGuyKin, Thanks, I didn't miss outt sharring them though, I'll put them on my other site, But, I would have liked to have joined in the contest here as it's fun! There are a lot of great photos that were entered in the contest, I looked at some allready and will be getting back to the rest when I can.
It sounds like a few folks are disappointed because they missed the contest deadline. I entered a couple of photo's right after the contest opened Oct. 7th and kept thinking I would get to a few more categories before the deadline, but seem to be a bit unorganized and slow lately. I spotted yesterday's message from Dave that we had until 7:00 p.m. EST before the contest closed, and I still missed getting a few pictures entered. Maybe next year I will be a bit more organized!
Iris: I know with jobs, family/kids, health issues and just daily life, it's hard to keep up with everything. Sorry to hear about your auto accident, I hope you are recuperating quickly and will be back on your feet soon! I hope you will share your photo's with us, even if they aren't in the contest venue. I don't know which forums/threads you frequent but the ones I hang out on have monthly bloom threads where we all share what we have blooming during the month.
Thanks to all who shared their scenic, lovely and sometimes funny photo's in this year's contest! I'm still not finished judging in every category yet, it's just so hard to decide 1st, 2nd and 3rd favorites! With so many great photograph's entered, I really have difficulty narrowing it down!
budgielover, after previewing your entries, did you hit Submit? (I think that's how it was set up, not sure) I just know there was another step after the preview.
Help....
Where are the pictures?
PS. Brother, what a twit. I found it.

Yes I did.
plantladylin, It wasn't an auto accident, It was a home accident, But, I'm doing so much better then I was when it happened. ( Thankyou) It's just that I could only use one arm for a while and one leg was messed up too, So I fell quite a ways behind on what needed to be done, But, I'm catching up. I go through different forums at different when I have a few extra minutes and I do post photos here and there, But, I also have a photo site where I post most of my photos. I had some bloomers this month, But, Just didn't have the time or energy to get very many photos :(
Sorry to hear that you missed getting a few of your photos entered.I hope you were able to get a good portion on that you had wanted to put on there.
The photos this year are outrageous. Been through about three classes and it took a couple of hours, but all are going to be viewed, gol-dang it!
Hap
For those of us who don't stop by regularly, maybe an email reminder could have gone out? Or a banner at the top of the newsletter at least? i didn't realize it was happening until 2 days before it was over... owell. Maybe next year...
