Joni...your lanai must be smelling wonderfully!!!

Wow Joni, those are all great! I especially love all of the buds and flowers on your odorata - that looks so cool.

Carol,
Yes...maybe scents flooding into the house!
Now I know the ID of the first photo...I got it from you with no ID.
After viewing your website...I've discovered it is Hoya AH0240...beautiful!

Thanks Christine...H. odorata is a show stopper!
I wonder if I plant it in the ground as a bush it will do the same thing?

Joni

San Francisco, CA

Thanks everyone.
Dominic- this is my first year for blooming albiflora, but I did expect it to happen at this time of year. It seems like all of the species in the immediate Hoya albiflora family bloom at this time of year, which is Australia's (and I guess New Guinea's) spring.
Hoyas albiflora, calycina, magnifica and H. sp. AH240 all look like giant sized versions of Hoya australis, with large white flowers and some red blush under the corona, and they all seem to flower in Australia's late spring (our late fall). Many clones of Hoya australis also flower at this time of year.
Dom, your photo of magnifica is I think the best one I've seen to date. Really beautiful, and of course, may I use it for the Stemma site?
Joni- how do you like sp. AH240? That seems to be an undetermined or undescribed species that also belongs in this complex. How is the fragrance?

Teguise, Spain

Course you can Mark, feel free.
I do also have a H albiflora budding up at the moment, but I think they're going to blast.
H sp.AH240? Thats a new one for me

Dominic

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Joni...I planted one in the ground...and it seems to be putting on new growth...YAY....

Dom...sp. AH240 is a clone I found in my collection (I inherited a bunch of hoyas years ago from an abandoned garden) which didn't fit anything...so gave it that collection number. It has a wonderful scent....

York, PA(Zone 6b)

Mark,
When I got it I thought it was an NOID eriostemma...that grows like crazy?
Now that I see the flowers...it is one of my very favorites...at least for this week :0)
The scent is sweet and clean...cannot wait till the rest of the buds open!
Thanks Carol!

Carol,
So you put the H. odorata in the ground?
I've taken it with me to the Market...and soooo many people want a plant...of course because it is in bloom.
I think I will plant it close to the my front entrance and start another to matching bushes?
Or purchase the one you have on your site...?!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

That's the one in the ground!!!

Great minds think alike?

I found one bloom opened on my H. australis this morning. This is the EA plant.

Beautiful photo Lin---love the water droplets on the flowers :-)

Shelley

(Zone 1)

Thanks Shelley, I watered early this morning. It's been real dry here and we're having gusty winds from Tropical Storm Ida which dries things out quickly. There's a chance we will get a little rain tomorrow from the storm as it turns back south, but it's predicted to be only 1/2" or so.

San Francisco, CA

Nice shot of H. australis, Lin. I love that one.
H. australis ssp. australis and H. nummularoides (the first photo in this thread) are both also reliable fall bloomers. So is H. onychoides- I have some buds on the way on that one.

(Zone 1)

Thanks Mark! I'm trying to make a list of bloom times for each of my Hoyas. I remembered australis blooming last fall but had forgotten about nummularioides since mine has shrunk in size LOL, and hasn't bloomed since 2007. I still have hopes that I will see peduncles forming on magnifica ... I'm thinking since our fall is just kinda sorta beginning, there's still a chance of blooms this year but I won't be holding my breath.

I found a peduncle on obscura today! It used to be a decent sized plant in a hanging basket but almost totally bit the dust so I took cuttings for insurance. It's a small plant and I didn't expect to see any sign of blooms on it for awhile, so it will be a nice surprise if the one little peduncle doesn't blast.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

lin...don't forget that H. lacunosa and H. obscura are similar in that they do not like to dry out.

(Zone 1)

Thanks Carol! That's probably why the lacunosa's haven't continued to do well for me, I've been keeping them way too dry! And, probably why the obscura went down hill from day one ... I'm going out to water a few things right now.

My H odorata opened up today....smells like bubblegum to me. :))

Congrats Doug on making 1st runner up in the photo contest with your beautiful Big Mac photo! I think it's worthy of first place! http://davesgarden.com/contest/2009/winners.php?catid=307 In my opinion, that is one photo that should be framed and hung on the wall!

(Zone 1)

Dom, do you have a photo to share of your odorata? Bubblegum fragrance sounds yummy!

Teguise, Spain

Yes, well done Doug...Lovely photo

Dom

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

Yes, well done Doug. It was one of my faves when voting. Yes, for some reason I had to do some voting...

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

Now that we are winding up on patting Doug on the back, so that we can get some more Hoya Porn? I am jonesing. But I noticed last night that Krinkle Kurl is showing buds on all 3 peduncles. This is the most floriferous of my plants right now.

Have to agree about that Hoya macgillivrayi photo, looks great. Hope to see something like that hanging off my plant some time soon.

Got home tonight not long after a bit of rain. Was looking around the garden with the torch and there was this strong sweet fragrance. Zeroing in, the sweetness became touched with a bit of spice. So I headed straight for the Hoya golamcoina and yes, a whole lot of peduncles in full flower. The Hoya "Kapit Borneo" has 3 peduncles ready to open over the next few days.

Too dark for photos so I'll get them tomorrow

Thanks for the compliments folks on the my Big Mac photo! I'm clearly no professional photographer, and it was the best I could do with my point and shoot type camera, and limited knowledge of how to take a good photo. I'm really surprised at how well the photo did - I did not even vote for it as number one myself! The winners were clearly much more deserving. I actually thought the other photo that I entered of H. leucorhoda was a much better picture.

Dom, lovely photo of H. odorata ... such pretty blooms!

Doug: That's a nice shot of leucorhoda too. I don't remember seeing that one in the contest but I'm thinking I probably finished voting before everyone had a chance to enter therefore missing a few!

Tropic: look forward to seeing your photo's ... the description of the fragrance on golamcoina sounds wonderful!

(Zone 1)

Well, no flower yet but it shouldn't be long now for my first bloom on H. obscura!

Wow, Doug, that really is an awesome photo. That flower cluster must have been huge!

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Here is "Ruthie" blooming again. This is the 3rd time for blooms since I got it from Carol earlier this year. She is inside now so I a wonderin if that is why there isn't much redorange on the ends. Still she is pretty to me anyway. Guess you can say she has her winter coat on instead of the summer frock.

Wow! Ruthie is beautiful!

Waterville, VT(Zone 4b)

Dee, really beautiful flower. I got Ruthie this spring, and I can only dream that it will ever bloom, but right now knock on wood, she looks pretty good.

Mark, there were 15 flowers in that cluster, and yes it was huge. A third peduncle just opened on my Big Mac with only five flowers, but it looks like the entire flowering event will have lasted almost six weeks encompassing both Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Lin, very nice looking plants - both of which will not grow for me! I failed with both more than once so that is it for me.

Doug

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Thanks,

Lin I think she was prettier earlier (beginning of summer) this year, but she is still pretty. I just can't get over how thick and hard the flower is.

Doug I would think you should be able to get her to bloom with that wonderful greenhouse of yours. I just love your "Big Mac". I got one this summer and it has some new growth but I fear it will be a few years yet before I can ever hope to get on like yours if ever. I know we can swap out during the year. Yours can winter down here and mine can summer up there, LOL

Dee

Chesapeake, VA(Zone 7b)

Wow Dee that is pretty. I hope mine makes it through the winter here. I know they like a lot of light.

Here's one of the H. golamcoina "Los Banos" that are pumping out all that sweet spicy perfume in my garden.
